No one in the National League with at least 70 plate appearances had a higher OPS in April than Geraldo Perdomo's 1.073 mark, as the young infielder came storming out of the gates with a .383/.456/.617 batting line in his first 22 games. However, to say luck was on Perdomo's side that month would be an understatement. He had just a 14 percent hard-hit rate and a .237 xBA but benefitted from a bloated .477 BABIP during that stretch. Regression came hard from that point forward, with Perdomo slashing just .222/.337/.314 the rest of the way. The 24-year-old did rebound with a .275/.362/.392 line and a couple homers in the postseason, operating as the Diamondbacks' everyday shortstop in their surprise run to the NL pennant. Perdomo should enter 2024 with a leg up on the shortstop gig, but Jordan Lawlar is lurking and Eugenio Suarez is now at third base. He has a terrific eye at the plate with a career 11.6 percent walk rate, but Perdomo's quality of contact is so weak (19.5 percent hard-hit rate in 2023) that it's hard to see him as a long-term road block for Lawlar.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Returns to spring lineup

Perdomo (knee) is in the Diamondbacks' lineup for Tuesday's Cactus League game against the Cubs. Perdomo injured his knee on a slide during a Cactus League game last week, but a long-term absence was never likely for the 24-year-old. Perdomo is just 4-for-25 through 10 spring games, but he remains the favorite to start at shortstop for the D-backs on Opening Day.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Tests on knee are negative

Perdomo took grounders Saturday after imaging on his left knee came back negative, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports. Perdomo hurt his knee earlier this week on a slide during Cactus League play, but he's managed to avoid a serious injury. It's not clear when he might be cleared to play in a game, but Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said he's not concerned about his shortstop's availability for Opening Day.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Hurt in slide

Perdomo tweaked his lower half on a slide during Monday's Cactus League game against the Athletics and will be held out until the weekend, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Jace Peterson started at shortstop in the two games since. The Diamondbacks feel Perdomo needs a few days to bounce back, but the injury doesn't appear to be anything serious. Perdomo has gone 4-for-25 over 10 Cactus League games.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Named starting shortstop

Manager Torey Luvollo said Friday that Perdomo will begin the season as Arizona's primary shortstop, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.comreports. Top prospect Jordan Lawlar made his MLB debut last season and will soon receive an extended look in the big leagues, but Perdomo's .712 OPS during the regular season last year and .754 OPS during the playoffs will help him keep the starting gig at shortstop for now. Perdomo totaled six home runs, 47 RBI, 71 runs and 16 steals in 144 contests, and he has a limited fantasy ceiling.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Ends skid

Perdomo went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in Tuesday's 8-4 win over the Giants. Perdomo's second-inning double must have felt good. It was the shortstop's first hit since Sept. 7, a span of 25 at-bats without one. He's on the strong side of a platoon with rookie Jordan Lawlar, both of whom are struggling during September. Perdomo is batting .119 (5-for-42) and Lawlar is at .150 (3-for-20) for the month.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Takes seat Wednesday

Perdomo is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Mets. Jordan Lawlar will start at shortstop and Emmanuel Rivera (shoulder) is back in action at third base. Perdomo has batted just .115 with a .439 OPS in 35 plate appearances since the calendar flipped to September.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Enters for injured Marte

Perdomo entered Saturday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Cubs for an injured Ketel Marte (knee), played second base, and walked in his lone plate appearance. Marte was hit by a pitch in the first inning but stayed in the game until the seventh, when the knee stiffened on him. Perdomo is expected to return to the starting lineup Sunday and could play either middle infield position. Both Marte and shortstop Jordan Lawlar (hand) were hit by pitches and are considered day-to-day heading into the series finale.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Not starting against lefty

Perdomo isn't in Arizona's lineup Saturday against the Cubs. Perdomo will take a seat Saturday with southpaw Justin Steele on the mound for Chicago. Emmanuel Rivera will fill in at the hot corner and bat eighth while Perdomo rests.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Not in lineup Friday

Perdomo is absent from the lineup Friday versus the Orioles. Nick Ahmed will start at shortstop and bat eighth as the Diamondbacks look for platoon advantages against left-hander Cole Irvin. The switch-hitting Perdomo carries a .633 OPS in 54 plate appearances this year versus southpaws. He's put up a .786 OPS in 353 plate appearances versus righties.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Gets breather Tuesday

Perdomo is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Dodgers. Nick Ahmed will play shortstop and bat eighth versus left-hander Clayton Kershaw after Perdomo logged four straight starts at the position while going 4-for-13 (.308) with two RBI and two runs scored.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Nabs two steals Friday

Perdomo went 1-for-3 with two walks, one RBI, two stolen bases and one run scored in Friday's 10-8 win over the Reds. Perdomo had gone 4-for-15 (.267) over nine games since his last multi-hit effort, while his pair of steals Friday accounted for his first pilfers since Aug. 2. The shortstop is at a .270/.372/.402 slash line with 15 thefts, six home runs, 41 RBI, 55 runs scored, 19 doubles and three triples over 111 contests in a strong-side platoon role.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: On bench versus lefty

Perdomo is absent from the lineup Thursday against the Reds. Nick Ahmed will start at shortstop and bat eighth with left-hander Brandon Williamson toeing the slab for Cincinnati. The switch-hitting Perdomo carries a .659 OPS in 52 plate appearances this year against southpaws. He has a .790 OPS in 338 plate appearances against righties.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Gets breather Monday

Perdomo is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Rangers. Perdomo generally sits in favor of Nick Ahmed when a southpaw is on the mound for the opponent, and that will be the case Monday with left-hander Jordan Montgomery set to start for Texas.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Riding pine versus lefty

Perdomo is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies. Though he's a switch hitter, Perdomo often sits against left-handed pitchers, so it comes as little surprise that he'll head to the bench Wednesday while southpaw Austin Gomber takes the hill for Colorado. Nick Ahmed will step in for Perdomo at shortstop and bat seventh.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Swats homer Sunday

Perdomo went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 5-4 win over the Padres. Perdomo hasn't done well in August, as this was his first multi-hit effort of the month. He's gone 7-for-30 (.233) over his last 11 contests. The shortstop is still seeing a starting role against right-handers, but he's been at the bottom of the lineup in his last two games. Perdomo has a .270/.371/.405 slash line with six homers, 38 RBI, 50 runs scored and 13 stolen bases over 100 contests, but it's tough to see him rebounding well enough to bump Corbin Carroll out of the leadoff spot.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Not starting against lefty

Perdomo isn't in Arizona's lineup Saturday against the Padres, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. With lefty Rich Hill set to start on the mound for the Padres, Perdomo will stay put in the D-backs' dugout. Nick Ahmed will fill in at shortstop and bat eighth.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Sitting Friday

Perdomo isn't in the Diamondbacks' lineup Friday against the Padres. After going 1-for-3 with a double Wednesday against the Dodgers, Perdomo will take a seat for Friday's series opener against San Diego. Nick Ahmed will start at shortstop and bat eighth in Perdomo's place.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Dropped to ninth in lineup

Perdomo is down to the ninth spot in the lineup Wednesday versus the Dodgers. Perdomo has mostly been hitting leadoff for the Diamondbacks in the second half of the 2023 regular season, but he is 4-for-32 with zero extra-base hits in his last nine games and his season OPS has fallen from .813 to .760 in that span. Corbin Carroll will serve as Arizona's table setter Wednesday against Los Angeles.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Enters for injured Marte

Perdomo entered Sunday's game to play second base after Ketel Marte was removed due to a hamstring injury. Perdomo went 0-for-2 in a 5-3 loss to the Twins. The road trip was rough for both team and Perdomo. After an extra-inning win over San Francisco to begin the excursion, Arizona lost its final six games. Perdomo went 4-for-27 (.148) with one walk. He's already the club's primary shortstop, so if Marte's injury lingers past Monday's off day, Jace Peterson could fill in at second base when Arizona kicks off a homestand Tuesday against the Dodgers.

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Nabs steal Wednesday

Perdomo went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the Giants. Perdomo did his part in the first inning, but that was the extent of his hitting contributions for the game. The shortstop is hitting .286 (16-for-56) since the All-Star break, though just four of those hits have gone for extra bases. He's at a solid .274/.380/.406 slash line with 13 steals, five home runs, 37 RBI and 48 runs scored over 91 contests this season. Perdomo continues to bat leadoff against right-handers while often sitting out versus southpaws in favor of Nick Ahmed.
