Atlanta gave Spencer Schwellenbach $1 million after drafting him out of Nebraska in the second round in 2021 and he had Tommy John surgery right after the draft. He put up good numbers in 2023 as a 23-year-old in the lower levels, but his stuff ticked up in 2024, with his fastball going from a 93-94 mph pitch to a 95-96 mph offering. He generated groundballs over 55 percent of the time at High-A and Double-A and was surprisingly summoned to the big-league rotation after just two starts at Double-A. There's nothing about Schwellenbach's arsenal or command that would cap his short-term potential, but even as an older prospect, it's quite the jump in competition to the majors after logging only 13 innings above High-A, so there could be some understandable bumps in the road.

  • Braves' Spencer Schwellenbach: Quality start in rookie duel

Schwellenbach came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the Orioles, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out three. Matched up against fellow rookie hurler Cade Povich, Schwellenbach produced his first quality start in three trips to the mound for Atlanta, but the 24-year-old right-hander was on the hook for a loss until Matt Olson went deep in the top of the eighth inning. Schwellenbach may have earned himself a longer stay in the majors with Wednesday's performance, but he'll take a 6.32 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 12:5 K:BB through 15.2 big-league innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home early next week against the Tigers.

  • Braves' Spencer Schwellenbach: Set to start Wednesday

Schwellenbach is listed as Atlanta's starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Orioles in Baltimore. He will be matched up against former college teammate Cade Povich in a battle between two of the top pitching prospects in both organizations. Schwellenbach hasn't looked sharp in his first two major-league outings, allowing a total of nine runs over 9.2 innings in losses to the Nationals and Red Sox. The young righty's future still looks bright, but he'll be difficult to trust for fantasy purposes Wednesday in a tough matchup.

  • Braves' Spencer Schwellenbach: Makes pro debut at Single-A

Schwellenbach (elbow) covered 1.2 no-hit scoreless innings for Single-A Augusta in his season debut Thursday, striking out one while working around two walks. Schwellenbach threw 26 of his 42 pitches for strikes in the appearance, the first of his professional career after he was selected by Atlanta in the second round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft. He didn't pitch in either of the 2021 and 2022 seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery shortly after being drafted, but he reported to spring training at full health and received the green light to bypass the rookie-ball level entirely.

  • Braves' Spencer Schwellenbach: Throwing again

Schwellenbach (elbow) announced Monday via his personal Twitter account that he's been cleared to play catch off flat ground. Schwellenbach's light catch session Monday at extended spring training marked his first time throwing since undergoing Tommy John surgery last August. Due to the timing of his procedure along with the fact that Atlanta plans to develop him as a starter, the 2021 second-round pick may not be cleared to make his professional debut until the final month of this season or potentially 2023.
