Player Outlook
Pedro Avila split his time between Triple-A El Paso and San Diego, but is likely hoping his days in El Paso are over. The run environment in that park is hostile to pitchers and Avila has allowed 29 homers there over the past two seasons while allowing just 5 homers in 63.2 innings of work at the big league level. Avila had whiff rates better than 40% on both his changeup and curveball last season and he mixes his pitches and spots up to get one of the best groundball rates (60.3%) in all of baseball. He worked both as a traditional starter as well as a bulk pitcher last season so it is rather silly to look at his splits in that area other than to note his numbers were more effective in bulk outings than they were when he came in as a traditional starter. That small sample size does not tell us as much as the fact Avila is a favorite to be in the rotation this year for San Diego as they realign their budgetary priorities for a post-Soto & Snell world.

  • Guardians' Pedro Avila: Headed to Cleveland

The Guardians acquired Avila from the Padres on Tuesday in exchange for cash considerations, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. Avila was designated for assignment by the Friars on Friday, but he will remain on a 40-man roster as he moves to Cleveland. The 27-year-old righty has allowed eight earned runs across eight innings through four appearances this season, though he still holds a 3.77 ERA throughout his career. Avila doesn't have minor-league options remaining, so he'll assume a spot in the Cleveland bullpen as a long reliever.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: DFA'd by Padres

The Padres designated Avila for assignment Friday. Avila has struggled in his four outings this season, allowing eight runs on five hits and six walks while striking out nine in eight innings over that span. In a corresponding move, the Padres recalled left-hander Adrian Morejon from Triple-A El Paso.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Strikes out seven in season finale

Avila did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing three hits over five scoreless innings in a 2-1 victory over the White Sox. He struck out seven. Avila had a fine start to end the season after working as a reliever in his previous two outings. The right-hander ends the campaign with a 3.22 ERA and 1.35 WHIP with 54 strikeouts across 50.1 innings. Notably, his 1.46 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in 24.2 innings as a reliever may lead to more chances in that role in 2024.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Picks up win in bulk role

Avila improved to 2-2 on the season in Sunday's 10-1 win over the Athletics, tossing three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and one walk and striking out five. Avila was deployed in bulk relief, entering the game after Nick Martinez opened the contest with three shutout frames. The 26-year-old Avila has now sandwiched a pair of scoreless outings around a disastrous start against the Dodgers on Monday, when he allowed seven earned runs over 2.2 innings. Avila should retain a spot in San Diego's rotation during the upcoming week, though he could be deployed behind Martinez once again when his turn comes up next weekend versus St. Louis.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Struggles versus Dodgers

Avila allowed seven runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two over 2.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Monday. Avila was not up for the challenge Monday, giving up a run in each of the first two innings before completely falling apart in the third. Aside from a sharp outing versus the Phillies last week, Avila hasn't shown much as a starter, allowing 18 runs (13 earned) over 16.2 innings across his last four appearances. He's at a 3.63 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 40:22 K:BB through 39.2 innings over 11 outings (five starts) this season. If he starts again, he's lined up to face the Athletics on the road this weekend.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Let down by defense in loss

Avila (0-2) took the loss against San Francisco on Thursday, allowing six runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out five batters over three innings. Avila got through two scoreless innings having yielded just one hit before things fell apart for him in the third. Of the first six batters he faced, one struck out, three singled and two reached on errors by first baseman Matthew Batten. Avila was unable to recover from the defensive miscues behind him and ended up surrendering two more hits as the Giants put up six runs in the frame. The right-hander has lost both of his starts since moving into the rotation Aug. 26 but may continue to work in that role with Yu Darvish (elbow) recently going on the IL and Joe Musgrove (shoulder) still working his way back to action.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Gets another start

Avila will start Thursday's game against the Giants at Petco Park. Avila flopped while stepping into the rotation for a struggling Rich Hill last weekend in Milwaukee, lasting 4.1 innings while giving up five earned runs on five hits and two walks in a losing effort. Despite the poor showing, Avila won't lose hold of his starting role, as the Padres will have room for both the 26-year-old right-hander and Hill in the rotation after Yu Darvish (elbow) was moved to the injured list earlier this week.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Struggles in starting opportunity

Avila (0-1) took the loss against Milwaukee on Saturday, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four batters over 4.1 innings. Avila got a chance to take a turn in the rotation Saturday after pitching to a 1.17 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 28:9 K:BB over his first 23 big-league innings (primarily in long relief) this season. The move looked like it could be a wise one when the right-hander began with four scoreless frames, but the Brewers racked up four hits and a walk while recording just one out against him in the fifth, with all five baserunners ultimately coming around to score. It's worth noting that the first two knocks against Avila in the fifth frame were an infield single and a bunt single, but the inning was disastrous for him nonetheless. It's unclear if he'll get another chance to start or return to a bullpen role in his next outing.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Shining as multi-inning reliever

Avila has made his last two appearances for the Padres on Aug. 6 and Aug. 12 as a long reliever, working 9.1 innings between the two outings while striking out nine and giving up one earned run on eight hits and one walk. Though he was moved to the bullpen after making a spot start Aug. 1 in Colorado, Avila has essentially been piggybacking Rich Hill in both of the veteran southpaw's last two turns through the rotation. The Padres likely didn't plan for the two to work in tandem on either occasion, as Hill failed to escape the fourth inning in both outings while giving up nine earned runs in total. Hill is slated to start Thursday's game in Arizona, and Avila could be called upon to cover multiple innings once more if Hill again struggles early in the contest.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Called up Sunday

The Padres recalled Avila from Triple-A El Paso ahead of Sunday's game against the Tigers. San Diego optioned its starter from Saturday's 14-3 win -- Jackson Wolf -- to Double-A San Antonio in a corresponding move. Avila is expected to serve as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen while he's up with San Diego.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Works in relief Wednesday

Avila made his first appearance Wednesday for Triple-A El Paso since being optioned to the affiliate July 3, working a scoreless inning in relief while allowing one hit and one walk in an 11-10 extra-inning win over Oklahoma City. Avila had made 15 of his previous 18 appearances with El Paso as a starter, but he ended up working behind Aaron Brooks on Wednesday as the Triple-A club treated the game as a bullpen day. The Padres haven't provided an explanation behind the decision, but it's possible that Avila worked in relief in an effort to keep him fresh ahead of a possible spot start this weekend in Detroit. The Padres will need a starter Saturday to fill in for the injured Michael Wacha (shoulder), and Avila could be a logical choice to step in, given that he has a spot on the 40-man roster and has been starting in the minors. Ryan Weathers is another candidate to get the call-up from Triple-A to fill in for Wacha.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Outrighted to Triple-A

Avila cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A El Paso on Monday. Avila was sent down after serving as the 27th man during a doubleheader in early May, and he'll now lose his spot on the 40-man roster while remaining in the organization. Over seven appearances (five starts) in El Paso, he's posted an 8.10 ERA and 1.77 WHIP in 23.1 innings.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Called up as 27th man

Avila was recalled from Triple-A El Paso to serve as the 27th man in Wednesday's doubleheader against the Guardians. Avila was sent down by the Padres on Sunday, but he'll provide an additional bullpen arm for Wednesday's twin bill. Over two major-league appearances this year, he's allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out five in four innings.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Sent down Sunday

Avila was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday. Avila was called up by San Diego on April 13, but he made just two relief appearances during his time with the major-league club. The 25-year-old allowed two runs in four innings, and he should see more consistent work in El Paso following Sunday's demotion.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Joins big club

The Padres recalled Avila from Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday. Avila gives San Diego an extra right-handed arm out of the bullpen after Austin Adams (forearm) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday in a corresponding move. The 25-year-old Avila previously made one spot start apiece for the big club in 2019 and 2021 but has otherwise pitched in the minors over the past three seasons.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Sent to minor-league camp

The Padres reassigned Avila (elbow) to minor-league camp Wednesday. Though he's believed to have recovered from his August 2019 Tommy John surgery, Avila didn't appear for the Padres in Cactus League play prior to his demotion. The 24-year-old made his big-league debut for San Diego in 2019 before going under the knife, tossing 5.1 innings of one-run ball in his lone spot start for the Padres. Assuming he's healthy again, Avila will likely begin the 2021 campaign at Double-A San Antonio or Triple-A El Paso.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Sent to minor-league camp

Avila (elbow) was reassigned to minor-league camp Sunday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The move is purely procedural as Avila was invited to big-league camp despite undergoing Tommy John surgery in August. He is not expected to play during the 2020 season.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Re-joins Padres

Avila (elbow) signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Tuesday. This move comes after Avila was non-tendered by the Padres earlier in the week. The righty made his big-league debut in 2019, allowing one run on four hits while striking out five across 5.1 innings. Avila is expected to miss most if not all of the 2020 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in August.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Headed for Tommy John surgery

Avila (elbow) is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery within the next few weeks, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. After wrapping up his rehab program for a strained right elbow in the rookie-level Arizona League, Avila slotted back into Double-A Amarillo's rotation last week and aggravated the injury in his first outing with the affiliate since April. The Padres' initial exams on Avila's elbow apparently detected structural damage, so he'll soon go under the knife to address the injury. Due to the timing of the procedure, the 22-year-old will likely remain on the shelf through the start of spring training in 2021.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Rehabbing in rookie ball

Avila (elbow) covered 3.1 innings Sunday in his rehab outing with the Padres' rookie-level Arizona League affiliate. He gave up one run on three hits and one walk while striking out eight. Avila pushed his pitch count up to 33 while making his third rehab start for the affiliate. The right-hander, who has been on the 7-day injured list since April with a right elbow strain, should soon be ready to report back to Double-A Amarillo. Avila made his MLB debut prior to sustaining the injury, but the extensive time he missed likely hurts his chance of making it back to San Diego when rosters expand in September.
