• Guardians' Pedro Avila: Headed to Cleveland

  The Guardians acquired Avila from the Padres on Tuesday in exchange for cash considerations, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. Avila was designated for assignment by the Friars on Friday, but he will remain on a 40-man roster as he moves to Cleveland. The 27-year-old righty has allowed eight earned runs across eight innings through four appearances this season, though he still holds a 3.77 ERA throughout his career. Avila doesn't have minor-league options remaining, so he'll assume a spot in the Cleveland bullpen as a long reliever.

Avila got through two scoreless innings having yielded just one hit before things fell apart for him in the third. Of the first six batters he faced, one struck out, three singled and two reached on errors by first baseman Matthew Batten. Avila was unable to recover from the defensive miscues behind him and ended up surrendering two more hits as the Giants put up six runs in the frame. The right-hander has lost both of his starts since moving into the rotation Aug. 26 but may continue to work in that role with Yu Darvish (elbow) recently going on the IL and Joe Musgrove (shoulder) still working his way back to action.

It's worth noting that the first two knocks against Avila in the fifth frame were an infield single and a bunt single, but the inning was disastrous for him nonetheless. It's unclear if he'll get another chance to start or return to a bullpen role in his next outing.

Though he was moved to the bullpen after making a spot start Aug. 1 in Colorado, Avila has essentially been piggybacking Rich Hill in both of the veteran southpaw's last two turns through the rotation. The Padres likely didn't plan for the two to work in tandem on either occasion, as Hill failed to escape the fourth inning in both outings while giving up nine earned runs in total. Hill is slated to start Thursday's game in Arizona, and Avila could be called upon to cover multiple innings once more if Hill again struggles early in the contest.

Avila had made 15 of his previous 18 appearances with El Paso as a starter, but he ended up working behind Aaron Brooks on Wednesday as the Triple-A club treated the game as a bullpen day. The Padres haven't provided an explanation behind the decision, but it's possible that Avila worked in relief in an effort to keep him fresh ahead of a possible spot start this weekend in Detroit. The Padres will need a starter Saturday to fill in for the injured Michael Wacha (shoulder), and Avila could be a logical choice to step in, given that he has a spot on the 40-man roster and has been starting in the minors. Ryan Weathers is another candidate to get the call-up from Triple-A to fill in for Wacha.

After wrapping up his rehab program for a strained right elbow in the rookie-level Arizona League, Avila slotted back into Double-A Amarillo's rotation last week and aggravated the injury in his first outing with the affiliate since April. The Padres' initial exams on Avila's elbow apparently detected structural damage, so he'll soon go under the knife to address the injury. Due to the timing of the procedure, the 22-year-old will likely remain on the shelf through the start of spring training in 2021.
