Athletics' Buddy Reed: Returns from injured list
Reed (undisclosed) was reinstated from the 7-day injured list Thursday, Melissa Lockard of The Athletic reports.
While the Athletics never revealed the nature of Reed's injury, he hadn't played at Triple-A Las Vegas since June 8. The 26-year-old recently made two relief appearances with the rookie-level Arizona League affiliate and went 2-for-5 with a double, a run, an RBI and two walks. He's appeared in 17 games at Triple-A this year and has slashed .262/.380/.405 with 11 runs, nine RBI and two stolen bases.

Reed strained his right quadriceps tendon late in spring training, but he looks to have made a full recovery from the injury before the minor-league season begins in May. Manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that Reed (quadriceps) will be "out a while" after undergoing an MRI, Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
The 25-year-old suffered a right quadriceps strain while hitting in the cage Tuesday, and it appears he's facing an extended absence. Reed should be considered out indefinitely until the A's provide a recovery timeline.

Although Reed had an impressive start to spring training at the plate and in the field, it wouldn't be surprising to see him begin the year in the minors with just over two weeks remaining until Opening Day.

Athletics' Buddy Reed: Making strong early impression
Reed, who is angling for an Opening Day reserve outfield spot, caught the eye of manager Bob Melvin with both his bat and glove over the Athletics' first two Cactus League games, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Reed, who's primarily stood out for his defense throughout a minor-league career that dates back to 2016, cut down Matt Beaty at home plate in the second inning of Sunday's Cactus League opener, and repeated the feat Monday by nailing the Reds' Alfredo Rodriguez at third base. Reed also slugged a two-run home run in the bottom half of the frame for his first hit of spring, leading to plenty of accolades from Melvin. "He gets a first-pitch heater and puts a good swing on it," Melvin said. "But it's the defense that is his calling card. Not only is he able to play all three outfield positions, but he runs and throws well. He's getting an opportunity like he probably never has before in big league camp, and he's taking advantage of it."

The Athletics announced Monday that Reed will report to big-league spring training as a non-roster invitee.
The 25-year-old Reed isn't a likely candidate to break camp with the Athletics, but his high-end speed and switch-hitting ability should keep him under consideration for a callup if the big club requires an extra outfielder at any point. Reed's last professional action came with the Padres' Triple-A affiliate at Amarillo in 2019, when he slashed .228./310/.388 with 14 home runs and 23 stolen bases in 440 plate appearances.

Reed is part of the 60-man player pool that will report to the Athletics' summer camp, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Reed arrived via trade with the Padres this winter, and despite going hitless over 14 Cactus League at-bats, he managed to contribute three walks, three steals and six runs over 11 exhibitions. The 25-year-old seemingly has a ways to go with respect to his offensive seasoning, as he's hit .254 or less in five of his six minor-league stops thus far. Reed isn't projected to make the Opening Day roster, but he's a candidate to be part of a pool of players that will continue training at an alternate location during the regular season.

Athletics' Buddy Reed: Dealt to Oakland
Reed was traded to the Athletics from the Padres on Thursday in exchange for Jurickson Profar.
Profar was dealt to the Padres at the beginning of December, and Reed was added to the trade Thursday as the player to be named later, joining Austin Allen in the deal. Reed hit .228/.310/.388 with 14 home runs and 23 stolen bases over 121 games at the Double-A level in 2019. The 24-year-old will get a chance to work in big-league camp during spring training, Alex Coffey of The Athletic reports.

Padres' Buddy Reed: Healthy at Double-A
Reed is listed as healthy at Double-A Amarillo, Mike Rosenbaum of MLB.com reports.
He dealt with a "low-grade" concussion in the middle of March, but is not on the IL to begin the year with the Sod Poodles. Reed has significant upside as a defender and as a base-stealer, but he is unlikely to hit for a high average against advanced pitching.

Reed was promoted to Double-A San Antonio on Monday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
While his .324/.371/.549 slash line, 12 home runs and 33 steals in 343 plate appearances at High-A are certainly eye-popping, it's worth noting that Reed (23) was old for the California League. He will face a much more appropriate challenge against Double-A pitching. Reed's 70-grade speed and average raw power are not up for debate, but it would be wise to be skeptical of his hit tool's utility against upper-level pitching until he proves otherwise.

Padres' Buddy Reed: Plates game-winning run Sunday
Reed registered a walkoff single as his lone hit in four at-bats for High-A Lake Elsinore in its 7-6 win over Inland Empire on Sunday.
His heroics in the ninth inning aside, Reed's performance was actually one of his more disappointing ones this season, but that merely speaks to the high standard he has established. The toolsy switch hitter has destroyed California League pitching to the tune of a .341/.383/.569 batting line while smacking nine home runs and going 24-for-29 on stolen-base attempts. A promotion to Double-A San Antonio could be imminent for the 23-year-old outfielder.

Padres' Buddy Reed: Over oblique issue
Reed (oblique) has started in both of High-A Lake Elsinore's last two games, going 4-for-10 with a home run, three runs and two RBI in those contests.
Reed sustained a left oblique injury in Wednesday's game and departed early, but it was apparently only a minor concern for the outfielder, who missed only two contests. The setback hasn't derailed Reed's hot start to the California League season, as the 22-year-old maintains a .397/.417/.638 slash line and has already produced three home runs and five steals across 60 plate appearances.

Padres' Buddy Reed: Exits with oblique issue
Reed injured his left oblique on a swing in Wednesday's game with High-A Lake Elsinore.
Reed was the 48th overall pick in the 2016 draft. The outfield prospect got off to a hot start with the Storm prior to this injury, hitting .415 with three homers and 11 RBI in 13 games played. No word on the injury's severity has come forth, though oblique injuries tend to linger longer than other day-to-day injuries.
