Player Outlook
In the spring of 2022, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. famously stated that 2021 was a trailer and now fans will see a movie. Like most sequels, the team and the player has failed to deliver on promises. Guerrero's 2021 nomadic season in friendly run environments helped him established career hights he has failed to come close to in each of the past two seasons. Management tweaked Rogers Centre before the 2023 season, but that did not prevent Guerrero's overall numbers from sliding for a second consecutive season as he and the rest of the club struggled to produce runs despite plenty of traffic on the bases throughout the season. If you treat 2021 as an outlier rather than a ceiling, 2024 Guerrero Jr. should not disappoint you given his skills provide a very high floor. Just remember that sequels are rarely better than the original and Vlady's 2021 season is a cult classic that should be appreciated rather than expected.

  • Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero: Slugs homer Friday

Guerrero went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers. He launched a Mason Englert offering completely out of the stadium to left-center field for a two-run shot in the fifth inning. Guerrero sat out a few days with a knee bruise he picked up making a sliding catch in foul territory last weekend, but it looks like he's fully healthy again. Through nine Grapefruit League games, the 25-year-old slugger is batting .417 (10-for-24) with a double and two homers.

  • Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero: Back at first base Friday

Guerrero (knee) is starting at first base and batting third in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers. The 24-year-old returned to the lineup as the designated hitter Wednesday after sitting out a couple games with a bruised left knee, and he's back playing defense a couple days later. There never seemed to be significant concern over the injury, and there shouldn't be any worries regarding Guerrero's availability for Opening Day.

  • Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero: Back in Wednesday as DH

Guerrero (knee) will bat third as the designated hitter in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Pirates. It's uncertain when Guerrero might return to the field, but he'll be able to return to exhibition play and get his at-bats in after making it through a full workout Tuesday. While Guerrero has been in and out of the lineup in recent days due to finger and knee issues, the Blue Jays don't seem to have any serious concern about his availability for Opening Day at this stage. The team didn't order imaging on his left knee.

Guerrero (knee) will go through a full workout Tuesday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. Expect Vlad Jr. to return in a day or two.

  • Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero: Nursing bruised knee

Guerrero was scratched from the lineup for Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles due to a left knee contusion, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. The 24-year-old was slated to start at first base and bat second in one of Sunday's split-squad games versus Baltimore, but he'll instead receive a day off after suffering the injury Saturday. • Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero: Back in action Saturday

Guerrero (finger) will start at first base and bat third in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. It appears to be all systems go for Guerrero after he jammed his left middle finger during a plate appearance Tuesday. He has six hits this spring, including a majestic, 438-foot homer to dead center field against the Phillies on March 4. A bounce-back season is widely expected for the 24-year-old.

  • Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero: Has been out with jammed finger

Guerrero has been unavailable the last few days after jamming his left middle finger during a plate appearance Tuesday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. The good news is the injury is considered minor, as Guerrero is expected back in the lineup for Saturday's contest against the Phillies. Vlad Jr. has had a strong Grapefruit League showing this spring, going 6-for-16 with a double and a home run.

  • Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero: Belts first homer this spring

Guerrero went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. The first baseman launched a no-doubt solo shot to straightaway center field of Nick Nelson in the first inning, Guerrero's first long ball of the spring, before adding an RBI single in the fifth. Guerrero came into camp in excellent shape, and that's translated into positive early results at the plate -- he's gone 6-for-13 through five games with a 1:2 BB:K.

  • Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero: Healthy to begin spring

Guerrero acknowledged Tuesday that he played through nagging injuries for most of 2023, but he spent the offseason getting into better shape in an effort to stay in one piece through the long season, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. "I achieved all the goals that I wanted to achieve," Guerrero said. "Of course, being in shape like I used to be, like I felt before in previous years, and I really believe that I achieved that goal. And I feel great right now." The first baseman dealt with knee and wrist issues last year, and while he missed only six games, he wasn't often playing at 100 percent. "If I tell you that I didn't play with pain in a lot of games, I would be lying," he said. "But that's not an excuse. It's part of the game. Sometimes you got to go on the field and grind, even if everything hurts. Also, I probably won't blame that because I didn't have the best preparation in the offseason last year." Guerrero seems to have learned his lesson when it comes to offseason prep, as he reported to camp both trimmer and stronger. If improved fitness translates into better results at the plate, the 24-year-old could recapture the MVP-level form he displayed in 2021.

  • Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero: Sets arbitration record

Guerrero will make $19.9 million in 2024 after winning his arbitration case against the Blue Jays on Wednesday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. It's the largest salary ever awarded by an arbitration panel, although the amount falls well short of the $31 million deal Juan Soto reached with the Yankees in January to avoid arbitration. Guerrero's numbers dropped in nearly every statistical category last season compared to the marks he set in 2022, but the slugging first baseman will receive a $5.4 million raise nonetheless. Guerrero remains a high-value fantasy asset, but his stellar 2021 campaign is beginning to look more like an anomaly than a season off which we should base expectations.

The 24-year-old slugger was slated to serve as the Blue Jays' designated hitter Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium. Spencer Horwitz will now fill that role as Cavan Biggio covers first base and Whit Merrifield enters the lineup at second base.

Guerrero is scuffling again in September, slashing .224/.333/.388 through 13 games with two of his 22 homers, but with 86 RBI on the season and 15 games left on the Blue Jays' schedule, he still has an outside shot at his second career 100-RBI campaign.

He later just missed another home run by rocketing a single off the left-field wall in the fifth to drive in another run. Guerrero has now hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games, batting .283 with three homers, 10 RBI and nine runs over that stretch. He is slashing .266/.341/.439 on the season over 583 plate appearances.
