Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Won't need surgery
Freeland (elbow) won't need surgery but is expected to miss about 4-to-6 weeks, MLB.com reports.
Freeland is still resting the injury and could be out until late June, though it's a positive that he'll avoid surgery. He struggled mightily until being sidelined, as he posted a 13.21 ERA and 2.55 WHIP across 15.2 innings. Peter Lambert has entered the rotation in Freeland's place.

Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Heads to IL with strained elbow
Freeland was placed on the 15-day injured list by the Rockies on Friday, retroactive to April 16, with a left elbow strain.
Freeland had been slated to start Saturday in spite of an injury to his right (non-throwing) shoulder that he suffered while pinch running. However, he now has a different, more serious injury to deal with. It's not clear at this point how much time Freeland might miss. Noah Davis has taken Freeland's spot on the roster, though Peter Lambert will take his spot in the rotation.

The left-hander was used as a pinch runner Monday since the Rockies have a short-handed bench, and he suffered an injury to his non-throwing shoulder on a play at the plate. Thankfully it's a minor issue and won't affect Freeland's preparation for his next start, which lines up for this weekend versus Seattle.

Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Picks up injury on basepaths
Freeland suffered an apparent right shoulder injury on a play at the plate during Monday's game against the Phillies, Luke Zahlmann of The Denver Gazette reports.
On a night when the Rockies were dealing with a short-handed bench, Freeland was called upon to pinch run in the top of the ninth inning and was involved in a collision at the plate with Philadelphia pitcher Jeff Hoffman. Freeland was in obvious pain walking off the field, though fortunately, he was holding his non-throwing shoulder as he headed for further evaluation. The southpaw will be considered day-to-day until more information on his injury is released. He had tentatively been in line to make his next start during this weekend's home series versus Seattle.

Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Ineffective versus Toronto
Freeland (0-3) was tagged with the loss after he pitched five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking three batters in Sunday's 5-0 defeat to the Blue Jays.
Freeland ran into trouble early, giving up one run in the first inning and then two more in the third frame. The Blue Jays added one more run in the fifth inning before his day came to an end. The left-hander once again struggled to keep the opponent off the basepaths, allowing at least eight batters to reach for the fourth consecutive start to open the 2024 campaign. Freeland has yet to pitch into the sixth inning this season, something he'll look to accomplish in his next projected start Saturday at home versus the Mariners.

Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Throws five frames
Freeland allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks over five innings in a no-decision Monday. He struck out two during the win over Arizona.
Freeland worked three scoreless frames before the Diamondbacks plated four runs in the fourth inning. While it wasn't a very impressive performance, it was a dramatic improvement after he'd been tagged with 17 runs over his first 5.2 innings. However, he forced just four swinging strikes Monday, his lowest of 2024. Freeland is now sporting a 6:6 K:BB with a 16.03 ERA through three starts. He's projected to take the mound in Toronto this weekend.

Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Mauled by Cubbies
Freeland (0-2) took the loss Tuesday, surrendering seven runs on nine hits and three walks over 3.1 innings as the Rockies were routed 12-2 by the Cubs. He struck out two.
Chicago put at least one run on the board in every inning the southpaw pitched, starting with a two-run homer by Seiya Suzuki in the first inning. Freeland has had a brutal beginning to the season, coughing up 17 runs in only 5.2 innings -- and he hasn't even pitched at Coors Field yet. The 30-year-old lines up to make his first home start early next week against Arizona, the team that lit him up for 10 runs on Opening Day.

Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Gashed by Diamondbacks in opener
Freeland (0-1) took the loss against Arizona on Thursday, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out two batters over 2.1 innings.
Freeland scuffled from the outset, yielding a two-run homer to Lourdes Gurriel on his sixth pitch of the contest. He made it through the second inning without any further damage, but he allowed seven straight Arizona batters to reach base before recording an out in the third and was ultimately charged with eight earned runs in the frame. Though Freeland is as close as it gets to an ace for Colorado for the time being, he hasn't posted an ERA better than 4.33 since 2018 and has very little fantasy appeal given his home park and lack of strikeout potential.

He'll take the ball March 28 on the road against the Diamondbacks. Freeland has had a strong showing this spring, displaying increased velocity and posting a 3.21 ERA and 14:1 K:BB over 14 innings. He's not an advisable fantasy start at home but could be considered as a streaming option on the road.

Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Bump in velo
Freeland has increased the velocity on all of his pitches this spring, Manny Randhawa of MLB.com reports.
Freeland made his second start of the spring Tuesday and allowed only one earned run across three innings while striking out five. More importantly, he averaged 92.6 mph with his fastball, nearly three ticks higher than his average mark in 2023. Freeland has been able to throw all of his pitches with more velocity, and he credits strengthening his shoulder during the offseason as well as working on his pitch grips for the improved performance.

Freeland allowed just one run through four frames before fading a bit and yielding a single score in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Freeland was hit hard at home versus Atlanta in his last start, but he was able to bounce back in this outing. This was the first time he'd walked multiple batters in a start since July 9. Freeland dropped to 5-14 while allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and a walk while striking out three over 5.2 innings in Wednesday's 7-3 loss to Atlanta.
Facing baseball's most powerful offense at Coors Field was always going to be tricky for Freeland. He ended up with a sour end to a mediocre August in which he went 1-3 while allowing 25 runs (24 earned) over 33.2 innings across six starts. The poor month elevated his ERA from 4.79 to 5.18, and he has a 1.47 WHIP and 89:38 K:BB over 140.2 innings this season. Freeland is projected to make his next start on the road in Arizona.

It was the 10th time in his past 11 starts that Freeland has allowed three or more earned runs.
