Player Outlook
George Springer's 2023 season surprised fantasy managers in many ways. The biggest surprise of them all is the 33 year old player eclipsed the 140 gamed played mark for the first time since he played all 162 in 2016. He also went out and posted the first 20-20 season of his career which was his first full season with even double-digit steals since the 2015 season. The 21 homers was a disappointment given the tweaks made to Rogers Centre to improve offense, but those improvements did not materialize into extra homers for anyone on the roster let alone Springer. His RBI production was held back with him hitting leadoff for most of the season and the bottom of the order not being on base as much as hoped. We cannot recommend looking for more of the same from this veteran given how much newness was introduced from Springer in 2023 as much as we can safely say repeating 20 homers is the only thing he is likely to repeat in 2024.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Swipes first spring bag

Springer went 0-for-2 with two walks, a run scored and a stolen base in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Pirates. Getting the start in right field, Springer drew a walk from Roansy Contreras to lead off the game and promptly swiped his first base of the spring. The 34-year-old outfielder is looking good in camp, batting ,300 (6-for-20) with a 5:3 BB:K, and after posting his first career 20-20 season in 2023 despite a career-low .732 OPS, Springer figures to remain a key part of the Blue Jays' offense again in 2024.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Slugs first spring homer

Springer went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a second run scored in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. The veteran outfielder took Matt Strahm deep in the sixth inning for his first homer of the spring. Springer hasn't seen a heavy workload in camp, appearing in five games and going 3-for-12 with a 3:3 BB:K. The Blue Jays deployed what could be their Opening Day lineup in Saturday's contest, and Springer was in his accustomed leadoff spot.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Will be club's leadoff hitter

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Thursday that Springer will remain the club's leadoff hitter in 2024, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Springer spent several weeks during the second half last season mostly battling fourth or fifth. However, he returned to his typical leadoff spot down the stretch and that's where his skipper says he'll begin the upcoming season. Schneider also noted that Springer is working on pulling the ball more in 2024. His pull rate was just 39.5 percent in 2023 after coming in at 48.3 percent in 2022 and 49.3 percent in 2021.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Resting in season finale

Springer is not in Sunday's lineup against the Rays. Toronto will give several everyday players the day off in the season finale after clinching a spot in the postseason. Whit Merrifield is manning right field and leading off while Cam Eden gets a rare start in left.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Cranks 20th homer

Springer went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Tuesday's win over the Yankees. After going 1-for-20 in his previous five games, Springer got the Jays started early Tuesday with a leadoff homer off Clarke Schmidt in the opening frame. Springer's now hit at least 20 homers in three straight seasons and eight times overall in his 10-year MLB career. He's batting .257 with a .736 OPS, 81 runs scored, 65 RBI and 19 steals through 633 plate appearances this season.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Goes yard twice in win

Springer went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in Saturday's 5-1 win over the Royals. Both homers were solo shots, as Springer took Zack Greinke deep in the fourth inning before he smashed a hanging slider from Angel Zerpa over the wall in right-center field in the seventh. It's the first multi-homer game of the season for Springer, who's batting .304 (38-for-125) since the beginning of August with six homers, six steals, 22 RBI and 23 runs, and the veteran outfielder now sits one long ball shy of his eighth career 20-homer campaign.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Reclaiming leadoff spot

Spinger is starting in right field and batting leadoff Tuesday against the Nationals, and manager John Schneider said he'll likely use the outfielder atop the lineup for the rest of the season, Ethan Diamandas of SI.com reports. The 33-year-old operated as Toronto's primary leadoff man throughout the first half but has mostly hit cleanup over the past month while Whit Merrifield handled leadoff duties. Springer has a .717 OPS in 94 games when hitting atop the order this season, but he'll nonetheless move back to that spot for the final five weeks.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Two steals in win

Springer went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and two steals in Monday's win over the Nationals. It's the first multi-steal game for Springer since April 4, as he improved to 19-for-23 in stolen base attempts this season. The 33-year-old outfielder would also tie the game 1-1 with an RBI single in the second inning. Following a 6-for-33 (.182) stretch, Springer has recorded hits in his last four games, going 5-for-15 in that span. He's now slashing .258/.327/.407 with 17 homers, 71 runs scored and 54 RBI across 548 plate appearances this season.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Rejoins lineup Sunday

Springer (ankle) is starting in right field and batting fifth Sunday against the Reds. The veteran outfielder sat out the past two games while nursing a jammed left ankle, but he'll return to the starting nine for Sunday's series finale in Cincinnati. Springer has a .316/.375/.439 slash line with a home run, three stolen bases, seven RBI and seven runs through 15 games in August.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Day-to-day with jammed ankle

Springer's absence from the lineup for the past two games is due to a jammed left ankle, but he's available off the bench Saturday against the Reds, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Springer's two-game absence had previously been unexplained, but it always seemed likely that an injury was the cause. Thankfully, the Blue Jays don't expect him to require a trip to the injured list. If there's a negative spin on this news, it's that the injury first occurred Wednesday, so it can't be used to explain a poor stretch which has seen him hit .198/.291/.271 in his last 25 games.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Sits for second straight

Springer is out of the lineup for the second game in a row Saturday against Cincinnati. The Blue Jays have yet to announce any specific injury or illness for Springer, but it's unusual to see the veteran outfielder miss back-to-back games while healthy. His .562 OPS over his last 25 games may have led the Jays to decide to give him a few days to clear his head, or those struggles may be indicative of a nagging injury that has yet to come to light. Whatever the reason, it will be Cavan Biggio in right field again Saturday.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Sitting amid slump

Springer is not in the lineup Friday at Cincinnati. Daulton Varsho, Kevin Kiermaier and Cavan Biggio will start across the outfield for the visiting Blue Jays. Springer has slashed just .198/.291/.271 over his last 111 plate appearances dating back to July 20, though he did tally his 16th stolen base of the season in Wednesday's series finale against the Phillies.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Snaps homer drought in win

Springer went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in a 1-0 win over Cleveland on Monday. In a game that lacked offense, Springer stood out with three of Toronto's eight hits. He produced the only run of the contest, swatting a solo shot off Logan Allen in the first inning. The long ball was the 14th of the season for Springer and snapped a 23-game homerless streak. He's bounced back from an ice cold 2-for-49, 13-contest stretch by posting a modest modest six-game hitting streak during which he's batting an even .500 (12-for-24) with four extra-base hits, four RBI, five runs and a stolen base.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: On base five times against BoSox

Springer went 4-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored and a stolen base in Saturday's 5-4 win over the Red Sox. The veteran outfielder appears to be breaking out of his slump, going 6-for-13 over his last four games while drawing four walks. Only one of those hits, a Friday double, has gone for extra bases, but Springer should begin adding some thump to his output soon enough. On the season, he's slashing .253/.324/.385 with 13 homers, 14 steals, 43 RBI and 60 runs in 107 contests.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Sits amid slump

Springer is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Orioles. The struggling Springer will get a day off after the Blue Jays' decision to move him down from the leadoff spot to No. 5 in the order over the weekend failed to spark his dormant bat. He went 0-for-13 with five strikeouts in the Blue Jays' series victory over the Angels and is now in a 1-for-39 rut at the plate over his last 10 games. Cavan Biggio will spell Springer in right field and bat eighth Monday.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Moved down to five spot

Springer has been moved down to the fifth spot in the Blue Jays' batting order for Friday's game versus the Angels, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. It's the first time since July of 2021 that Springer has batted anywhere other than leadoff. The demotion coincides with a 1-for-26 stretch at the plate for the right fielder. Whit Merrifield has been elevated to the leadoff spot for Friday's contest.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Sitting out Tuesday

Springer isn't in Toronto's lineup Tuesday against the Dodgers. Springer is just 1-for-21 with two runs scored across his last five games, so he'll get a day off Tuesday in order to regroup. While Springer rests, Jordan Luplow will start in right field and bat eighth.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Back from paternity leave

The Blue Jays reinstated Springer (personal) from the paternity list Monday. Springer is one of two players the Blue Jays will bring back from the paternity list coming out of the All-Star break, as right-hander Jay Jackson is also set to rejoin the team after welcoming the birth of his child. The Blue Jays optioned utility man Ernie Clement to Triple-A Buffalo to clear room on the active roster for Springer, who finished the first half with a .269 average, 13 home runs, 52 runs, 39 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 87 games.
