Bumgarner allowed two hits and two walks while striking out five over 3.1 scoreless innings in Thursday's spring start against the Cubs. Bumgarner had been scheduled to start one of Wednesday's two games, but rain canceled both and he was pushed to Thursday. It was his second start in the Cactus League, though he also threw 3.2 innings in a "B" game against minor leaguers. On Thursday, the lefty allowed a hit in the first inning and was pulled in the second with one out and the bases loaded to preserve his pitch count and get another up-and-down. The zero runs allowed were due largely the work of reliever Zach McAllister, who escaped the second-inning jam. Bumgarner returned to pitch perfect third and fourth innings.... See More ... See Less

Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Works on back field
Bumgarner threw 3.2 scoreless innings in a "B" game Friday against the Cubs, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Facing minor leaguers, Bumgarner allowed four hits and struck out six without issuing a walk. Diamondbacks pitching coach Brent Strom was pleased with the left-hander's curve and offspeed offerings, which the coach feels are the pitcher's best pitches.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Throwing B game Friday
Bumgarner will throw in a "B" game against the Cubs on Friday, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports. This will be Bumgarner's second spring outing. The left-hander his scheduled to throw four innings and 55 pitches. Prospect Brandon Pfaadt will start Friday's Cactus League game against the Reds.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Makes spring debut
Bumgarner allowed two runs on two hits, two walks and two hit batsmen without a strikeout in Sunday's spring start against Cleveland. Bumgarner allowed a run in each of his first two innings and saw runners reach base in all three frames of his Cactus League debut. He got a couple of quick outs in the first before a walk and a double produced the Guardians' first run. The left-hander then hit two consecutive batters an inning later, fueling a second run. There's something to be said for getting work with runners on base during spring training, but the performance does little to shake off the fantasy pessimism created by his first three years in Arizona. Bumgarner will be part of the rotation, but the Diamondbacks aren't counting on him as a workhorse starter.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Throws to live batters
Bumgarner faced hitters during a live batting practice session Monday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. This was Bumgarner's third such session of the spring. His next action will likely be in a Cactus League game, but Arizona manager Torey Lovullo did not indicate when that might occur. Projected members of the rotation are just now making their debuts: Zach Davies started Tuesday and Merrill Kelly is scheduled for Friday.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Shut down for season
Manager Torey Lovullo said Sunday that Bumgarner won't pitch again for the Diamondbacks this season, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Bumgarner surrendered one run over six innings his last time out against the Dodgers, and Arizona has decided to end his 2022 campaign on that high note. The veteran left-hander will finish the year with a 4.88 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 112:49 K:BB across 158.2 innings, and the Diamondbacks will take a look at their younger arms during the final days of the regular season. Bumgarner still has two years and $37 million remaining on his contract.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Posts first QS in nearly two months
Bumgarner (7-15) earned the win over the Dodgers on Wednesday, allowing one run on one hit and one walk while striking out five batters over six innings. Bumgarner came into the game with a 7.82 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and 0-6 record over his previous nine outings. However, he recorded a throwback performance against the division rival Dodgers, allowing just one hit -- a solo homer by Mookie Betts in the fourth inning. Bumgarner tossed 57 of 84 pitches for strikes and posted his highest strikeout total since Aug. 15. The southpaw picked up his first win since July 23, which is also the date of his previous quality start.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Staying in rotation
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Bumgarner will remain in the rotation after Friday's 12-3 loss to San Diego, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Bumgarner was cuffed around by the Padres, who hit three home runs off him and 12 balls at a velocity of 95 mph or greater. In the past nine games, the left-hander has a 7.82 ERA, allowing 42 earned runs over 48.1 innings. Lovullo said some members of the six-man rotation will get at least two more starts while others will get three, but he did not go into specifics.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Homer problems in 15th loss
Bumgarner (6-15) took the loss Friday versus the Padres. He allowed five runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out two over five innings. Four of the five runs on Bumgarner's line came via the home run. Brandon Drury took him deep twice and Austin Nola added a solo shot to account for most of the damage. Bumgarner has lost six of his last nine starts since his last win, yielding 42 earned runs in 48.1 innings in that span. The southpaw's ERA is up to 5.01 with a career-worst 1.48 WHIP and 107:48 K:BB through 152.2 innings across 29 starts. He's lined up for a brutally difficult road start versus the Dodgers next week.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Falters in sixth inning
Bumgarner (6-14) took the loss against Colorado on Saturday, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two batters over six innings. Bumgarner was in vintage form through five frames, keeping the Rockies off the scoreboard while allowing just two hits. However, things turned south for the veteran lefty in the sixth, as he allowed the first five hitters he faced to reach base on a walk, three doubles and a massive C.J. Cron three-run home run. Bumgarner was allowed to fight through the inning and retired three of the final four batters he faced, but the damage was enough to send him to his 14th loss. That is second-worst in the majors and is the most losses he has ever taken in a single campaign.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Works edges in last start
Bumgarner said he focused on staying out of the middle of the zone during his most recent outing Saturday against the Brewers, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. Bumgarner entered the outing on a terrible run, giving up 27 runs on 44 hits (five HR) in 26.1 innings over his previous five starts. The left-hander tried multiple solutions to work out of the slump and finally landed on pitching to the edges of the zone. "I needed to take a step back, I guess, and not be so aggressive in the zone," he said. "After the last few, I don't know if 'careful' is the right word, but making my pitches." Bumgarner fell behind in counts more than we would have liked, but he felt the change was necessary after getting hit so hard during the month of August.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Shows improvement Saturday
Bumgarner allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out four batters over five innings in a no-decision against Milwaukee on Saturday. This was by no means vintage Bumgarner, but the outing was a marked improvement for the veteran hurler after he allowed four or more earned runs in each of his previous six starts. This was only the second time in his past eight outings during which the southpaw didn't allow a long ball. Bumgarner still holds an ugly 4.83 ERA on the campaign, which is fifth-worst among qualified starters.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Ambushed but takes no-decision
Bumgarner allowed seven runs on 11 hits and no walks while striking out two batters over 3.2 innings against Philadelphia on Monday, but he didn't factor into the decision. Bumgarner's recent struggles continued in a big way against the Phillies, as he allowed seven runs before being booed as he walked off the mound with two outs in the fourth inning. The veteran southpaw served up only one home run, but he gave up three doubles and also hit a batter. The only positive for him was that Arizona stormed back to score the game's final 13 runs and take home the win. Over five starts in August, Bumgarner posted a 9.23 ERA and 1.94 WHIP while going 0-3.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Still searching for solution
Bumgarner and Arizona pitching coach Brent Strom are still searching for a way out of the left-hander's recent slump, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. Bumgarner said they've been "throwing a bunch of (expletive) against the wall trying to see what sticks," as he and Strom try to reverse a recent trend in which the pitcher's ERA is 7.53 over his last five starts (28.2 IP). The pitching coach hinted at toying with the idea of significant changes to Bumgarner's delivery, but they landed on stylistic tweaks, where the lefty gets more "tempo and rhythm and timing" between his upper and lower halves. It sounds like the team's at a loss to explain the issues plaguing Bumgarner heading into his next start Monday against the Phillies.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Starting Monday
Bumgarner will start Monday against the Phillies, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports. Bumgarner's turn through the Diamondbacks' rotation was skipped for the weekend series against the White Sox, but he'll start the series opener against the Phillies after working on some tweaks with pitching coach Brent Strom. Over his last five starts, Bumgarner has posted a 7.53 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in 28.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Next start skipped
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday that Bumgarner won't make his scheduled start this weekend against the White Sox, and he'll instead work on some tweaks with pitching coach Brent Strom before re-entering the rotation during the three-game series against the Phillies that begins Monday, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports. Bumgarner has lost four of his past five outings and has a 7.53 ERA and 19:10 K:BB across 28.2 innings during that stretch, and he'll receive some extra time between starts in an attempt to right the ship. The veteran left-hander had a solid first half but has struggled since the All-Star break, and he now has a 4.53 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 25 starts this year.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Losing streak continues
Bumgarner (6-13) took the loss during Saturday's 16-7 defeat at the hands of the Cardinals, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Bumgarner was provided two leads but gave both back and departed with one on and one out in the sixth with the game tied at 4-4. Reliever Noe Ramirez allowed inherited runner Tommy Edman to score, putting Bumgarner in line for his third straight loss. During the recent poor streak, the 33-year-old has surrendered 26 total runs (24 earned) across 28.2 innings and has incurred four losses in five turns. Bumgarner carries a 4.53 ERA and 1.43 WHIP into his next start, scheduled to come next weekend against the White Sox.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Shelled by former club
Bumgarner (6-12) took the loss against San Francisco on Monday, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out six batters over 5.2 innings. Bumgarner will forever be a part of Giants lore due to his epic postseason performances and three World Series rings with the club, but his former team took no mercy on him Monday. The southpaw was knocked around for four extra-base hits (three doubles, a homer) and gave up his most earned runs in an appearance this season. Bumgarner has taken the loss in three of his past four outings, posting a 7.33 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and 16:8 K:BB in 23.1 innings over that stretch.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Surrenders five runs in loss
Bumgarner (6-11) took the loss against Pittsburgh on Wednesday, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out eight batters over six innings. Bumgarner notched his second-highest strikeout count of the campaign, but that was about the only thing that went right for him Wednesday. The veteran hurler gave up exactly five runs for his third straight contest, raising his ERA to 4.13 on the season. Bumgarner pitched relatively well over the first three months of the campaign but has posted a 5.05 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 42.2 innings since the start of July.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Madison Bumgarner: Surrenders four runs vs. Rockies
Bumgarner didn't factor into the decision during Friday's 6-5 win against Colorado, allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and one walk with two strikeouts in 5.2 innings. Bumgarner was efficient early, permitting only single runs in the second and third before falling apart in the sixth by allowing three runs on four baserunners and an error, at which point he was removed. The veteran lefty has now posted five runs and 11 baserunners in consecutive starts while striking out a total of two batters in a combined 11.2 innings. Bumgarner possesses a 3.96 ERA and 1.39 WHIP with 80 strikeouts in 116 innings and lines up to take the mound again midweek against Pittsburgh.... See More ... See Less
