Chase Headley: Released by Padres
Headley was released by the Padres on Friday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic San Diego reports.
Headley's second term with the team that drafted him back in 2005 ended in failure, as he was designated for assignment and released after hitting just .115 in 27 games. The rebuilding Padres had little reason to devote a roster spot to an underperforming veteran, but there's a good chance he finds a fit with another team in a bench role. He's a switch hitter who had posted a wRC+ of at least 92 for 10 straight seasons prior to this year, so unless the entire league believes he's completely fallen off a cliff at age 34, there's likely still a spot for him somewhere in the league. The chance of him finding enough at-bats to have much fantasy relevance seems slim, however.

Padres' Chase Headley: Designated for assignment
Headley was designated for assignment Saturday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic San Diego reports.
It just hasn't worked out for Headley since returning to San Diego, where he spent the first several years of his major-league career. In 60 plate appearances, the veteran is hitting a mere .115/.233/.135. Still, he did hit a solid .273/.352/.406 last year for the Yankees, so he has a chance to latch on somewhere else as a productive bench bat. Cory Spangenberg will take his place on the roster.

Padres' Chase Headley: Remains on bench
Headley is out of the lineup Thursday against Colorado.
Headley will occupy a spot on the bench for the third straight game as Christian Villanueva earns another start at third base. During 12 plate appearances thus far in 2018, Headley has yet to accumulate a hit and has recorded five strikeouts.

Headley is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Rockies.
Headley was expected to be the primary third baseman for San Diego this season, but he's made just two starts this season. It wasn't overly surprising Tuesday since southpaw Kyle Freeland was hurling for Colorado, but it seems like the veteran's hitless start is playing a role in things. Christian Villanueva will man the hot corner following his three-homer night.

Headley is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rockies.
With a southpaw toeing the rubber for the opposition (Kyle Freeland), Headley will give way to Christian Villanueva at the hot corner. Headley has hit better against righties over the course of his career, so he could continue to cede starts to Villanueva against same-handed pitching.

Padres' Chase Headley: Sits again Saturday
Headley is out of the starting lineup for the second straight day against the Brewers on Saturday.
Headley started the season opener but sat Friday for Cory Spangenberg and Christian Villanueva will receive the start at third on Saturday. This could be a platoon-related move, as the Padres face the left-handed Brent Suter. Villanueva is the only-right handed hitter of the trio, and though Headley is a switch-hitter, he's hit better against righties (111 wRC+) than lefties (100 wRC+) over the course of his career. It's possible that Villanueva ends up starting against most southpaws.

Padres' Chase Headley: Not starting Friday
Headley is not in the lineup Friday against the Brewers.
Headley went 0-for-4 with a walk in the season opener Thursday. Cory Spangenberg will start at third base in his place Friday. Expect Headley to play close to every day, though Spangenberg will get his share of at-bats at third as well as second base and in left field.

Padres' Chase Headley: Making spring debut Thursday
Headley (finger) will start at third base and bat cleanup in Thursday's Cactus League game against the Padres.
It marks the spring debut for Headley, whose entry into the Padres' exhibition lineups was delayed after he hurt the ring finger on his throwing hand while fielding a grounder earlier this week. Headley, who was traded back to the Padres in December following three and a half seasons in the Bronx, is the frontrunner to open the 2018 campaign as San Diego's everyday third baseman. With no more than 14 home runs in any of the past five seasons, Headley rates as one of the lower-end fantasy options at the position.
