The Royals designated Sauer for assignment Monday.
Sauer made the Royals' roster as a Rule 5 pick but managed just a 7.71 ERA and 9:11 K:BB over 16.1 innings. The 25-year-old will go through the waiver process, but if he isn't claim, the Royals must offer his rights back to the Yankees.
