There's no show quite like Shohei Ohtani right now in professional sports. He's been one of the best hitters in the league, leading baseball in homers while hitting .263/.313/.612 with six steals, and while he hasn't been quite as good as a pitcher, he has a 2.10 ERA with 40 strikeouts in five starts. So, he's been quite good as a pitcher, too.
On Tuesday's Fantasy Baseball Today, we talked about whether he has been the most valuable player in Fantasy so far this season, and I think the answer is obviously yes, assuming you can use him as a hitter or in either role. Obviously, the unique nature of his contributions makes it hard to say exactly how valuable he is -- and that's going to be a bit of a pickle for MVP voters if he keeps this up -- but there's no doubt he's been an extraordinarily valuable piece for any Fantasy team even without accounting for his ADP being outside of the top 150.
But how valuable should he be when talking about trades? It's a pretty easy question to answer in leagues where there is both a pitcher and a hitter version of Ohtani because you can just check out the trade values chart below. And, in leagues where you have to make a decision about whether to use him at the start of each week, the decision making process isn't that different -- you're almost certainly going to use him as a hitter every week unless he has a two-start week, so his hitting value should be the primary thing you're looking for.
However, it's much tougher to say how to value him in a daily lineup league where you can use him as both a hitter and a pitcher. It's not quite as simple as just adding his value in both roles together -- in a Roto league, that would be 30 points in the trade value chart, or roughly analogous with Xander Bogaerts and Tyler Glasnow. You won't get his hitting stats on the days he pitches in CBS Fantasy leagues, so that's one complication.
But the bigger complication is the same one MVP voters are going to have to deal with: You can't just add his WAR (or trade value) together and get the right answer, because you've also got to figure out how valuable it is to have that kind of production from a single lineup spot. Let's say Ohtani stays healthy and lives up to THE BAT's rest-of-season projection:
- Pitcher: 12 GS, 65 IP, 84 K, 3.52 ERA, 1.28 WHIP
- Batter: .275/.344/.519 with 70 runs, 27 homers, 66 RBI, and 13 steals
Even if you don't get all of the hitting stats for those days he pitches, you're still talking about simply massive production. It's like having a healthy Byron Buxton and Tyler Mahle in the same player, except it's from one spot in the lineup. Look at it another way: It's like having Buxton and Mahle plus an extra Buxton or Mahle.
How much more valuable is that? Well, I think you could make a very good case Ohtani should be a first-rounder in daily-lineup leagues, though with injury concerns, maybe he's more like a mid-second rounder. You're looking at probably a 40-point value in the trade chart if he played a full season and maybe something like 35 given those concerns. And, honestly, that might be overselling how valuable he actually is.
And all of that is separate from whether you should try to sell Ohtani. My ranking of him in this chart is intended to be based on a sober analysis of his projected value moving forward, but the perception for Ohtani is almost certainly a lot higher than what I have him for here. If you have Ohtani on your roster in any type of league, you probably need a lot more than what I've got him valued for to move him -- and I don't blame you. That's the whole point of selling high, after all.
But it's not a bad idea to consider it. Ohtani is an incredible talent, but the simple act of pitching and hitting full time opens him up to more injury risk than most players even without taking into account his injury history.
But I would definitely need to be overpaid to make a trade right now. If you can do that, it's probably the right call -- or at least the sober, logical call. Sometimes, though, it's about doing what is fun. And having Ohtani on your team is the most fun thing you can do right now.
