  • Islanders' Braydon Coburn: Healthy scratch as playoffs begin

Coburn, as expected, was a healthy scratch in the Islanders' 4-3 overtime victory over the Penguins in the playoff opener. Coburn is a break glass in case of an emergency defenseman. He is only expected to play in this series if one of the Isles' top six defenders suffers an injury.

  • Islanders' Braydon Coburn: Only two games played with Isles

Coburn has only played two games with the Islanders since being acquired at the trade deadline. The Islanders traded for Coburn because they wanted an insurance policy in case one of their top six defenders got injured. The Isles trust Coburn more than Thomas Hickey or Sebastian Aho, but Coburn won't crack the lineup barring an injury, unless the Islanders opt to rest one of their regulars on defense now that they have clinched a playoff spot.

Coburn was reassigned to the active roster Monday. Coburn's last game was Feb. 21 versus the Habs and it appears the 36-year-old blueliner will return to the lineup against Calgary on Monday. The Saskatchewan native figures to remain a fringe roster player and therefore won't offer much in the way of fantasy value.

Coburn was promoted to the active roster from the taxi squad Sunday, Steve Lloyd of TSN 1200 Ottawa reports. • Senators' Braydon Coburn: Heading north of border

The Lightning traded Coburn, Cedric Paquette, and a 2022 second-round pick to Ottawa in exchange for Anders Nilsson and Marian Gaborik on Sunday. The 35-year-old blueliner scored just four points in 40 games with Tampa Bay last season while filling a depth role. Coburn could see a slightly bigger role in Ottawa as a veteran leader for the defense, but still, he likely won't make much fantasy impact for standard leagues.

The veteran defender will turn 35 in a couple of weeks and is on the downside of his career, so he will likely return to the bench when the Bolts get healthy.
