  • Saints' Tyrann Mathieu: Contract restructured

Mathieu agreed Friday to restructure his contract with the Saints, clearing up $4.7 million in 2023 salary cap space, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Mathieu posted a career-high 91 tackles (64 solo) while suiting up for all 17 games with New Orleans in 2022, with eight passes defended and three interceptions. The veteran safety heads into his age-31 season with two years left on his deal with the Saints.

  • Saints' Tyrann Mathieu: Posts career campaign in NOLA

Mathieu recorded a career-high 91 tackles (64 solo) as well as eight passes defended, including three interceptions, while playing all 17 games in the 2022 season.

Mathieu provided instant returns after joining his hometown team this past offseason, finishing with the squad's second-most tackles behind linebacker Demario Davis (109) as well as the second-most passes defended behind cornerback Alontae Taylor (11). The 30-year-old safety also tallied at least three interceptions for the fourth year in a row, increasing his career total to 29. Mathieu was one of the few mainstays in New Orleans' banged-up secondary by playing all but two defensive snaps in the 2022 regular season. He has two years remaining on his three-year, $33 million contract with New Orleans.

  • Saints' Tyrann Mathieu: Collects season-high 11 stops

Mathieu recorded 11 tackles (six solo) in Saturday's 17-10 win over the Browns.

Mathieu had his best outing Saturday in terms of stops dating back to Week 4 of 2017, when he logged 12 tackles. The veteran safety amassed a game-high 11 stops versus Cleveland, which accounts for his third double-digit tackling performance of his career, as well as his new season high in that department. Mathieu will now look to keep momentum churning and operate in his usual every-down role when the Saints travel to Philadelphia in Week 17.

  • Saints' Tyrann Mathieu: Solid outing in win

Mathieu tallied six solo tackles and two passes defended in Sunday's 21-18 win against the Falcons.

Mathieu tied strong safety Marcus Maye for the Saints' second-most passes defended Week 15, as Atlanta signal-caller Desmond Ridder went 13-for-26 passing for 97 yards during his starting debut. The 30-year-old free safety now ranks second on the team in passes defended this season (seven) behind cornerback Alontae Taylor (10), who also paced the team in this category with three Sunday. Mathieu has also recorded 70 tackles while playing just about every defensive snap through 14 games this season, and he should have a chance to set a new career high in this category if he stays healthy over the final three weeks of the regular season.
