Giants' Tony Jefferson: Plans to convert to linebacker
Jefferson intends to put on 10-15 pounds over the offseason and convert to a full-time linebacker, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Jefferson has spent his NFL career as a safety, though he got some looks as a hybrid linebacker with the Giants last season. Per Raanan, Jefferson logged 41 snaps at the position and made nine tackles, so he's not entirely unfamiliar with the role. It's unclear if the veteran will return to New York next season, as he's slated to become a free agent March 15.

Giants' Tony Jefferson: Ready to play vs. Washington
The Giants activated Jefferson (foot) from their injured reserve list Saturday ahead of Sunday's game versus the Commanders, Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports.
After sitting out the Giants' last six games, it looks like Jefferson is going to suit up in Week 13. With Xavier McKinney (hand) still on the non-football injury list and Dane Belton (shoulder) listed as questionable for Sunday, Jefferson could be thrown back into the defensive mix right away.

Jefferson was signed off the team's practice squad Oct. 8, but suffered the injury soon after and hasn't played since Week 5 against the Packers. The veteran safety now has a 21-day window to practice with the team before he needs to be placed on the 53-man roster.

Jefferson was signed from the Giants' practice squad to the active roster ahead of the team's Week 5 win over the Packers, and he recorded four tackles across 13 defensive snaps -- both season highs. However, he presumably picked up an injury during the contest as well and will be in danger of missing Week 6 if he doesn't return to practice Thursday or Friday.

Jefferson was elevated to the active roster in Week 1 and Week 2 and logged a total of 19 snaps between the two games. He may be in for a larger role now that he's been signed to the active roster, as he's been working with the first-team defense during practice, per Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. Jefferson has ample NFL experience with 101 career games under his belt, but he hasn't been a major contributor since 2018 with Baltimore.

Baltimore released Jefferson on Tuesday, and the Giants subsequently swooped in and signed him to their practice squad. The defensive back played in six games between the 49ers and Ravens last season, with most of his action coming at the end of the campaign. The veteran has ample NFL experience and is a strong candidate to be added to the active roster at some point this season.

Jefferson landed on the COVID-19 list Monday but will be cleared to return to the field several days later. It's not yet clear whether he'll join the active roster for a third straight week Sunday against the Rams after he totaled 10 tackles (six solo), a sack and a pass defense in Week 16.
