Linebacker Gerald Hodges was traded from the Vikings to the 49ers on Tuesday, sources told NFL Network's Rand Getlin.

Hodges started three of Minnesota's first four games, but he's only been a part-time player since Week 1, typically coming off the field whenever the Vikings use their nickel defense.

This trade suggests Vikings rookie Eric Kendricks has been deemed ready for a three-down role. Hodges, on the other hand, may get a shot to replace Michael Wilhoite in the 49ers' starting lineup, but a three-down role is probably out of the question.
