Report: Randy Moss, Michael Crabtree 'atop the depth chart' for 49ers

The Randy Moss experiment in San Francisco is going well. Quite well, actually: according to a report, Moss, along with Michael Crabtree, is 'atop the depth chart' in San Francisco.

That crisp, cold February morning will remain forever etched in my brain. Not necessarily because Randy Moss announced that he was returning to football, so much as the fact that I watched him do it while the legendary wideout tried to figure out how to operate USTREAM.

Anyway, we had a lot of fun with Moss this offseason (sup Cris Carter?) before he eventually signed with San Francisco. As to how well he would play with the 49ers, well, that was met with plenty of skepticism. But here we are, headed towards training camp, and Moss is reportedly "atop the depth chart" along with Michael Crabtree.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, who also writes that "the 49ers have never had a group of wide receivers as deep and talented" as this group. That seems kind of nuts, but the 49ers did heavily target wideouts this offseason, signing Moss and Mario Manningham and drafting A.J. Jenkins in the first round. Additionally, the 49ers have Ted Ginn (re-signed)and Kyle Williams left over from last season.

The offseason, Maiocco writes, "could not have gone any better for Moss."

And, apparently, the expectation is that Crabtree, Moss and Manningham will form a dynamic group that will give the 49ers versatility and the ability to spread the field with multiple sets of receivers, something they weren't able to do often (or, at least, dangerously) in 2011.

It behooves everyone to remember, though, that this is the pre-pre-season. We haven't even gotten to training camp. Everyone's excited about their offseason additions and everyone expects their team to win the Super Bowl. (This goes double for the Niners, if you buy into what Vernon Davis is saying.)

Things could look a lot different once the season rolls around if Moss isn't getting touches, if the offense is stagnating, or if Alex Smith is skipping balls at his knees. But for now, there's apparently high hopes for an improvement at the wideout position in San Francisco.
