The loss of Peters could be immense for Philadelphia. (US Presswire)
The news that the Eagles announced Friday morning that they had re-signed tackle King Dunlap to a one-year deal was rather, well, un-newsworthy. Until, that is, we read the report from the Wilmington News Journal that left tackle Jason Peters suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon and that surgery is set for Tuesday.

The team has since announced the news.

Now, the Dunlap signing makes sense, though he most likely won't replace the predicted production of Peters. But Dunlap also has familiarity with the offense, because he's taken over for Peters in the past when he's been injured.

Peters' absence for a significant time will be a big loss for Philadelphia, especially considering he was ranked as the No. 1 tackle in football last year by Pro Football Focus.

The team said Peters injured himself while working out in Texas.

So, just how bad is this news for the Eagles?
Here's the statement released by Eagles coach Andy Reid:

"As we announced earlier, Jason Peters has sustained a ruptured Achilles tendon. He had been working out in his hometown in Texas when this occurred. He alerted [head athletic trainer] Rick [Burkholder] and they quickly put together a plan of attack for his evaluation, surgery and subsequent rehabilitation.

"We all know how much Jason loves to play the game and how much he was looking forward to the start of the 2012 season. Jason is one of the best, if not the best, offensive tackle in the NFL.

"We don't know when he will return to the field and we will not speculate on a timeline. We are just going to let the surgical process and the rehabilitation process play itself out. Howie and I will sort out the roster situation for the offensive line. We are glad to have King [Dunlap] back as a part of our offensive line and we will continue to scan the free agent market, also knowing the draft is less than a month away."
