Coach Tom Couhglin may have some shuffling to do in the secondary as the Giants prepare to face Tampa Bay in Week 2. (US Presswire)

The New York Giants' secondary suffered insult and injury in the Week 1 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Not only did quarterback Tony Romo throw for 307 yards and three touchdowns, but fill-in starter Michael Coe left the game with a hamstring injury at the end of the third quarter.

This week, though, New York is starting this week off on the right foot -- specifically Prince Amukamara’s.

Safety Kenny Phillips didn’t practice on Monday because of a sore back, but coach Tom Coughlin said he expects Phillips to practice Wednesday. Amukamara (high ankle sprain) worked with his teammates for the first time since injuring himself in the preseason, and even Coe said he’s seeing some encouraging signs from his injured hamstring.

“The pain is there -- just trying to block it,” Amukamara said on Monday. “I mean, when you’re in mid-play and somebody’s going deep on you, you just forget about it. But then when you stop you’re like, ‘ooh.’ But like I said, I didn’t aggravate it today so I’m pretty excited about that.”

Amukamara -- who did appear to be moving well in all directions -- said he’s tested the ankle by doing jumping jacks and different hopping drills, all of which he’s able to do without limitation.

If he feels good on Tuesday, Coughlin said, Amukamara could see more action on Wednesday.

Amukamara did all of the drills on Monday, but not necessarily every rep.

The Giants have already lost cornerback Terrell Thomas (knee, IR) for the season and Amukamara would have been the Week 1 starter had he not injured himself against the Chicago Bears in August.

Coe feels like he’ll be in pads when the Giants practice again on Wednesday.

“I feel really good, actually,” he said. “I got to run and change direction. I didn’t really feel it. I’m really encouraged and I have been from the get go.”

Will Beatty still feels like the starter: Beatty was used as a blocking tight end in Week 1 because a back injury prevented him from tacking enough snaps at left tackle to start the game.

Now, he says his back is better and he’s ready to reclaim his starting left tackle spot from Sean Locklear.

“I know I could handle it,” Beatty said on Monday. “I mean, it’s my job. We had the preseason, OK, they said they were going to rest me. So that was my timetable to be ready for the first game and it just so happened that they didn’t need to use me, but my mindset, I’m still preparing myself for me starting the game.”

Beatty has been getting his full allotment of reps in practice, but he’s been splitting them with the first and second teams, meaning he’s seeing plenty of defensive ends Osi Umenyiora and Jason Pierre-Paul.

Da’rel Scott unlimited: Scott sat in Week 1 with a knee injury, but told CBSSports.com that he fully participated in Monday’s practice. Expect him to be active this Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Keith Rivers is day to day, every day: Rivers played well in his Giants debut (seven impressive tackles) despite leaving the game temporarily because of a hamstring issue.

Rivers said he’s day-to-day, but could practice Wednesday.

As far as injuries go, Rivers isn’t very forthcoming. That’s not a knock on him, but fans shouldn’t expect to hear a lot of details about any ailments he may have.

His surgically repaired wrist was not a problem against the Cowboys.

Could Marvin Austin play in Week 2? The second-year defensive tackle hasn’t played in a meaningful game since 2009 at North Carolina (he was suspended in 2010, was on the Giants’ IR with a torn pectoral in 2011 and missed Week 1 because of a lingering back issue). Now though, there’s a distinct chance he could be on the field this Sunday providing meaningful depth at defensive tackle.

Austin practiced for the first time since Week 1 of the preseason on Monday and said he still felt a subtle pain in his back. But given the depth issues at defensive tackle -- the Giants had three healthy DTs last Wednesday -- Austin is starting to feel the pressure to get on the field.

“I need to be out there playing,” he said, adding that he’ll have a better idea of his status on Wednesday.
