  • Reds' Asdrubal Cabrera: Hitless with new team

Cabrera lined out in his pinch-hit appearance Wednesday in the Reds' 5-4 loss to the Pirates. The Reds claimed Cabrera off waivers from the Diamondbacks on Aug. 27 with the hope that he could become a pinch-hitting specialist off the bench, but he's failed to make any sort of impact in that capacity. The 35-year-old is still searching for his first hit as a member of the Reds, as he's off to an 0-for-18 start. He hasn't made up for the lack of hits by showing quality plate discipline, either; he's reached base only twice via a walk and a hit by pitch.

  • Reds' Asdrubal Cabrera: Claimed by Cincinnati

Cabrera was claimed off waivers by the Reds on Friday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo recently indicated Cabrera was likely to see decreased playing time during the final month of the season, so it's not much of a surprise the team placed him on outright waivers. The 35-year-old will be joining a playoff contender in Cincinnati and should see most of his action as a reserve option at the corner infield spots. Cabrera has a .244/.324/.392 slash line with seven homers, 21 doubles, 40 RBI and 34 runs in 90 games this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: Starting after all

Updating a previous report, Cabrera will start at third base and bat third Thursday versus the Phillies. Cabrera was scheduled to get a breather in the series opener, but he was a late addition to the lineup after Arizona scratched David Peralta and Josh VanMeter. As a 35-year-old on an expiring contract, Cabrera wouldn't seem to have much of a future on a rebuilding club like Arizona, so he'll likely see his opportunities take a hit during the final month of the season.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: Not starting Thursday

Cabrera isn't starting Thursday's game against the Phillies. Manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday that Cabrera may see less playing time across the final few weeks of the season, and the 35-year-old will be out of the lineup for a second straight game. Josh VanMeter will take over at the hot corner and bat third.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: Playing time may dry up

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Cabrera's playing time may drop over the final weeks of the season, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. Lovullo was asked about Cabrera, who has started 16 of 20 games prior to Wednesday's day off, and the manager said he's "looking to change that a little bit." He added that other veterans' playing time may diminish, but Lovullo was not specific. The young players that aren't already getting everyday at-bats are Josh VanMeter and Drew Ellis, each of whom play positions that Cabrera has filled at times this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: Gets breather

Cabrera is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates. Drew Ellis will pick up a start at third base while Cabrera rests after starting four of the past five games. The 35-year-old broke out of an 0-for-10 slump in Tuesday's 4-2 loss, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: Takes seat Sunday

Cabrera is on the bench for Sunday's series finale in Colorado. A hitless Saturday lowered Cabrera's average to .211 in the last 10 games. He's tallied three doubles, a home run and two RBI in that span. Drew Ellis is playing third base and batting seventh Sunday.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: Delivers two hits in loss

Cabrera went 2-for-5 with a double in Friday's 9-4 loss to Colorado. Cabrera has started eight of the last 10 games, which in a vacuum isn't odd, but is so when one factors in Arizona's record ranks 29th among 30 teams. Perhaps manager Torey Lovullo is deferring to the 35-year-old's veteran status, but the manager has several young players up with the team that could use those plate appearances. For now at least, Cabrera should be considered a regular, playing four-to-five games per week.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: On bench Thursday

Cabrera will sit Thursday against the Phillies. The Diamondbacks are sitting several regulars on getaway day as they prepare to fly to Denver to take on the Rockies over the weekend. Cabrera sits after making five straight starts, with Drew Ellis taking over at third base.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: Overtaking Walker on depth chart

Cabrera will start at first base and bat third Sunday against the Padres. Cabrera will pick up his third straight start and second in a row at first base, replacing Christian Walker at the latter position for the second game in a row. Though the 38-80 Diamondbacks are likely to continue prioritizing younger options over the final six weeks of the season, Cabrera at least appears to be ahead of the struggling Walker in the pecking order among the veteran bats left on the roster. Cabrera's .737 OPS on the campaign is just over 100 points better than Walker's mark (.636).

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: Blasts two-run shot

Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and an additional run scored in Tuesday's loss against the Giants. Cabrera slugged a sixth-inning blast off Alex Wood for his seventh homer of the season. The veteran third baseman has gone 8-for-25 with a .993 OPS, two homers and seven RBI in eight games this month.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: Takes seat Sunday

Cabrera is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Drew Ellis will get a turn at third base while Cabrera takes a seat for the series finale. Cabrera still looks like Arizona's top option at the position for now, but as a veteran on an expiring contract, his opportunities could take a hit in August and September while the 35-77 Diamondbacks prioritize the development of younger players.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: On bench Thursday

Cabrera is not starting Thursday's game against the Giants. Cabrera has been a steady contributor of late, hitting .313 with five extra-base hits, nine RBI and seven walks in his last 10 games. Drew Ellis plays third base and bats sixth Thursday.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: Not starting Sunday

Cabrera is out of the lineup Sunday against the Dodgers. Cabrera is 5-for-20 with three doubles, four walks, four RBI and two runs in six games since returning from the injured list, and he'll receive the day off Sunday. Drew Ellis will cover the hot corner for Arizona in the series finale.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: Still a Diamondback

Cabrera started at third base and went 2-for-3 with three walks and two RBI in Friday's 6-5 extra-inning win over the Dodgers. Cabrera was a prime candidate to be traded, but the 36-year-old infielder remained with Arizona past Friday's trade deadline. Manager Torey Lovullo managed Cabrera's starting assignments earlier in the season, never letting him start more than two consecutive games, but Cabrera has started four straight and appeared in all five games since coming off the injured list. After the Diamondbacks traded Eduardo Escobar to the Brewers, Cabrera could be a regular at third base. The Escobar trade coupled with Josh Rojas' finger injury presents opportunities for the veteran.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: Drives in two in return

Cabrera went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two doubles Saturday against the Cubs. Cabrera was activated from the injured list Saturday, but he was not in starting lineup. He entered the game as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning and remained in the contest as the third baseman. That was plenty of time for him to bolster the Diamondbacks' lead, as he delivered a two-run double in his first plate appearance. Despite being out of the lineup Saturday, Cabrera could be in line for plenty of plate appearances while both Ketel Marte (hamstring) and Josh Rojas (finger) remain on the injured list. Through 225 plate appearances this season, Cabrera is hitting .247/.338/.402 with five home runs, 26 runs scored and 30 RBI.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: Reinstated from injured list

Cabrera (hamstring) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Saturday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Cabrera will return to the active roster after he spent two weeks on the injured list with a right hamstring strain. He was at the rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate recently and went 1-for-6 with a walk and four strikeouts. The 35-year-old isn't starting Saturday against the Cubs but could be available off the bench. Josh Rojas (finger) was placed on the 10-day IL in a corresponding move.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: Logs ABs with rookies

Cabrera (hamstring) played third base and logged four at-bats with the Diamondbacks' entry in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said the veteran felt "very good" following the session, and Cabrera will get at-bats during a "B" game against minor-league pitchers as a next step. At this point, the organization is hoping to get Cabrera healthy enough so that he can be traded.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: Ready for rehab assignment

The Diamondbacks assigned Cabrera (hamstring) to their rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment. Cabrera is ready for game action about a week and a half after landing on the injured list with a strained right hamstring, so he shouldn't require much ramp-up time. Before being deactivated, Cabrera was hitting .240 with five home runs, 28 RBI and 25 runs across 223 plate appearances with the Diamondbacks.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: Out with hamstring strain

Cabrera was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a right hamstring strain. It's not clear when the hamstring issue arose for Cabrera, but the infielder last played Friday against the Dodgers. The move to the injured list will keep the 35-year-old on the shelf until July 20 at a minimum, and it remains to be seen if he'll need additional time to recover. The Diamondbacks could provide additional update later Saturday or Sunday.
