Chris Young: Joins MLB in front office role
Young accepted a position Thursday as the Vice President of On-Field Operations, effectively ending his playing career, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
The soon-to-be 39-year-old was hoping to keep his playing career going in 2018, but was unable to find an opportunity after opting out of his minor-league deal with the Padres prior to the season. Young will call it quits after 13 MLB seasons with the Rangers, Padres, Mets, Mariners and Royals, finishing with a career 3.95 ERA across 1297.2 innings. He'll work under Joe Torre in his new role.

Chris Young: Opts out of contract
Young has decided to opt out of his contract with the Padres, Bob Scanlan of FOX Sports San Diego reports.
Young has decided to search for big-league opportunities elsewhere after being informed by the Padres that he wouldn't make their Opening Day roster. Given his struggles over the past two seasons (combined 6.52 ERA and 1.75 WHIP across 118.2 innings), it may be tough for the 38-year-old to find a major-league gig.

Padres' Chris Young: Fails to make roster
Young was told Monday that he won't make the Padres Opening Day roster, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Young's contract allows him to opt out if he doesn't make the Opening Day roster, and he is now expected to do so. A rotation spot opened up following Dinelson Lamet's elbow injury, but that spot will go to Robbie Erlin instead of Young. The 38-year-old righty has posted ERAs of 6.19 and 7.50 in the last two years, so he could have trouble finding another major-league job.

Padres' Chris Young: Reemerges as rotation candidate
Young could be reconsidered for a spot in the Padres' rotation to begin the season with Dinelson Lamet (elbow) expected to be sidelined until at least May, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Tribune reports.
After manager Andy Green revealed Sunday that Bryan Mitchell and Tyson Ross would remain in Arizona through Wednesday to toss simulated games to prepare for likely rotation assignments, it was assumed that Young was out of the mix for a starting role and would open the season as a long reliever for the Padres, if he was even included on the roster. However, after Lamet went down with the elbow injury during Sunday's Cactus League start, the Padres suddenly have another opening in the rotation, which will most likely fall to Young or Robbie Erlin. Per Acee, the Padres were set to meet with Young about his role with the team following his appearance in a minor-league game Sunday, so there should soon be some clarity regarding how -- or if -- the veteran right-hander fits into the big club's plans.

Padres' Chris Young: Eliminated from rotation competition
Manager Andy Green reported Sunday that Young will occupy a long-relief role if he makes the Opening Day roster, Dennis Lin of The Athletic San Diego reports.
Young was previously entrenched in the battle for the team's No. 5 starting pitcher role, but the Padres have apparently decided he's no longer in the running to crack the Opening Day rotation. With Young looking at a long-relief bullpen role to begin the year, it seems likely that Tyson Ross will round out the back end of the rotation.

Young tossed three innings of one-run ball while giving up three hits and striking out four in Tuesday's win over Kansas City.
Young fared well against his former club and now has five strikeouts through seven spring innings. The 38-year-old is one of several pitchers vying for the Padres' final rotation spot. We are a couple of seasons removed from the veteran's renaissance year in 2015 (3.06 ERA over 123.1 seasons), and it wouldn't be a huge development in mixed leagues if he were to continue his hot start and win the job battle. He could draw the interest of NL-only fantasy owners.

Padres' Chris Young: Minor-league deal with Padres
Young signed a minor-league deal with the Padres that includes an invitation to spring training, Dennis Lin of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Like Tyson Ross, who is also returning to San Diego, Young will get a chance to make the big-league rotation this spring. The Padres are looking for innings while they carefully monitor how much their young pitchers throw in a non-competitive season. The 38-year-old righty has logged MLB earned run averages over 6.00 in each of the last two seasons.

Young was designated for assignment by the Royals on Friday.
Following the team's signing of reliever Neftali Feliz, Davis lost his spot with the team and was subsequently taken off the 40-man roster. During 14 appearances with Kansas City this season, the 38-year-old accumulated a 7.50 ERA and 2.03 WHIP with 22 strikeouts over 30 innings. He hasn't been a viable fantasy option this season, and may not get another chance with a different organization.

Young was designated for assignment earlier in the week before ultimately being let go after compiling an unsightly 7.50 ERA, 2.03 WHIP and 22:14 K:BB across 30 innings out of the Royals' bullpen this season. He could catch on elsewhere as a free agent given his prior big-league experience, but he likely won't carry any fantasy value wherever he ends up.

Royals' Chris Young: Deals three scoreless frames Wednesday
Young dealt three scoreless innings in relief Wednesday, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out two against Detroit.
The 38-year-old, back in a long-relief role, looked much better than he had as a starter earlier in the month. Young's 3.86 ERA working out of the bullpen suggests he's been a decent option from there; however, the righty's ugly 4.33 FIP is more indicative of his performance. Overall, Young offers very little value across the fantasy landscape.

Royals' Chris Young: Crushed in second straight spot start
Young was knocked around over 3.2 innings, allowing five runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three in a no-decision against the Orioles on Sunday.
The veteran surrendered two home runs, the second of which ended Young's start after just 64 pitches. Through nine games (two starts) this season, the 37-year-old right owns a brutal 7.27 ERA and 2.08 WHIP over 17.1 innings. Even if the Royals do need another spot start next week, Young most certainly has pitched himself out of contention for the job. He's really struggled to provide any value on a team that has major roster decisions looming. Whether Young even finishes the year with the Royals is a legitimate question at this point.

Royals' Chris Young: Confirmed as Sunday's starter
Young will start Sunday's series finale against the Orioles, Josh Vernier of 610 Sports reports.
The Royals seemed to be leaning toward granting the veteran another spot start, but the news has since been confirmed. Young will toe the rubber opposite Baltimore right-hander Kevin Gausman with the hope of improving from his last spot start, in which he lasted only three innings.

Royals' Chris Young: Top candidate for Sunday's spot start
Royals' manager Ned Yost said Wednesday that he was "leaning" toward offering Young another spot start, Rustin Dodd of The Kansas City Star reports.
Yost will have to fill the gap left by Ian Kennedy (hamstring) for at least one more turn through the rotation. The spot start would most likely come Sunday against the Orioles at Kauffman Stadium. "I got a few days," Yost said. "I'm leaning more toward C.Y. right now in our park." The skipper added that southpaw Travis Wood could also be an option.

Royals' Chris Young: Lasts three rocky innings in Tuesday's start
Young gave up four runs on seven hits and four walks over just three innings in Tuesday's start against Tampa Bay.
He's extraordinarily fortunate that he only ended up with four runs on his line after putting 11 men on base. Young is nearing his 38th birthday, and he's coming off a 6.19 ERA and 1.66 WHIP last season. This year's been no better, as his 5.93 ERA and 2.12 WHIP are both fantasy-team-killing numbers. Young certainly won't stick in the rotation after this outing, and it's sure starting to seem like he's hearing the siren call of retirement.

Royals' Chris Young: Will start Tuesday
Young will leave the bullpen and make a spot start Tuesday against the Rays, J. Scott Butherus of MLB.com reports.
Young tossed three innings of one-hit ball in his last outing on May 2 against the White Sox. Outside of that appearance, the 38-year-old's been less than impressive. He sports a 4.22 ERA and 7:4 K:BB through seven games (10.2 innings). Royals' manager Ned Yost said Young won't be asked to do too much in the emergency start. "He's a veteran guy and he's really good at letting us know when he's starting to get fatigued." That said, Young should only be used as a last resort for fantasy teams in a pinch.
