  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Undergoes thumb surgery

Hamilton underwent surgery Thursday to repair a torn UCL in his left thumb, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. Hamilton suffered the injury recently at Triple-A Worcester and will be sidelined for the remainder of the season. • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Sent back to Worcester

The Red Sox optioned Hamilton to Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Brought up by Boston

Hamilton was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Monday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. The Red Sox deactivated infielder Pablo Reyes (elbow) and outfielder Wilyer Abreu (paternity list) Monday, so Hamilton was brought up to help fill the void. He'll provide depth in the middle infield while Reyes is on the shelf, but Hamilton may not get the chance to play as frequently as he did in June and July, when he picked up 10 starts at shortstop and hit .138 with two stolen bases over 34 plate appearances in total. While he's with the Red Sox, Hamilton could at least represent a useful option off of the bench thanks to his speed.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Optioned to Triple-A

The Red Sox optioned Hamilton to Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. With Yu Chang (wrist) returning from the 60-day injured list Friday, Hamilton will serve as the Red Sox's roster casualty in order to free up a spot in Boston's crowded infield. Hamilton slashed just .138/.265/.207 over 13 games during his stint in the majors, though he could return later this season if he puts up numbers consistent with his .838 OPS in Triple-A.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Days in big leagues numbered

Hamilton is expected to be sent down to Triple-A Worcester when the Red Sox activate Yu Chang (wrist) from the injured list Thursday or Friday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. The Red Sox are getting healthier in the middle infield with Chang coming off the IL with Pablo Reyes (abdominal) also likely to be activated in the coming days. Hamilton has filled in the last two weeks with a just a .503 OPS in 12 games, and his time in the majors should end soon.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Sitting versus lefty

Hamilton isn't in the Red Sox's lineup Saturday against Toronto, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Yusei Kikuchi is set to start on the mound Saturday for the Jays, so the lefty-hitting Hamilton will begin the game on the bench. Enrique Hernandez will take over at shortstop and bat seventh.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Not in Sunday's lineup

Hamilton is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox. Hamilton started the past three games after being promoted Wednesday and has gone 1-for-9 with a walk, two stolen bases and two runs. Enrique Hernandez will take over at shortstop Sunday.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Logs first MLB hit

Hamilton went 1-for-3 in Thursday's 6-0 loss to Minnesota. Hamilton made his first MLB start and logged his first career hit in the eighth inning. Pablo Reyes, who had been dealing with abdominal soreness, started at second base but was removed in the fourth inning, suggesting he's still not 100 percent. If Reyes needs time on the injured list, the speedy Hamilton could remain with the Red Sox and get additional starts at shortstop.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Gets first MLB start

Hamilton is starting at shortstop and hitting eighth Thursday against the Twins. Hamilton is one of the fastest prospects in the game, and he stole a base and scored a run as a pinch runner Wednesday after getting called up from Triple-A Worcester. The 25-year-old lefty hitter posted a .255/.339/.486 slash line with 11 home runs and 27 steals in 52 games at Triple-A. He will be sharing middle-infield work with Enrique Hernandez, Christian Arroyo and Pablo Reyes in the short term.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Out with thumb sprain

Hamilton was placed on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Worcester on Saturday, retroactive to June 2, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. Hamilton will be sidelined for at least the next week, but the Red Sox don't expect him to face a lengthy absence. The 25-year-old is performing well in his first taste of the Triple-A level this year with a .267/.344/.524 slash line, 11 homers and 26 stolen bases in 47 games.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Bound for Triple-A

Boston optioned Hamilton to Triple-A Worcester on Monday. The 25-year-old Hamilton may not be polished enough as a hitter to profile as a realistic everyday player for Boston down the road, but his elite speed was enough to earn a spot on the Red Sox's 40-man roster this offseason. After impressing in a small sample of action in the Grapefruit League -- Hamilton got on base at a .370 clip and went 5-for-5 on stolen-base attempts over his first 13 games -- he'll now get the chance to hone his skills with Boston's top minor-league affiliate to begin the 2023 season.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Joins 40-man roster

Hamilton was added to Boston's 40-man roster Tuesday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. Hamilton is so fast that he could be used as a pinch runner at times now that he is on the 40-man roster. The 25-year-old middle infielder was just a touch above league average as a hitter at Double-A (104 wRC+) but hit 12 home runs with 70 steals in 119 games.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Traded to Red Sox

Hamilton, Jackie Bradley and Alex Binelas were traded from the Brewers to the Red Sox on Wednesday in exchange for Hunter Renfroe. Hamilton was an eighth-round pick during the 2019 draft and had his first taste of professional baseball last season. He had a .773 OPS in 68 games at High-A before being promoted to Double-A, where he posted a .727 OPS in 33 contests. The 24-year-old was listed among Milwaukee's top prospects and is unlikely to make his way to the majors in 2022.

  • Brewers' David Hamilton: Promoted to Double-A

Hamilton was promoted from High-A Wisconsin to Double-A Biloxi on Tuesday. One of the fastest players in the minors, Hamilton hit .264/.352/.424 with five home runs and 41 steals on 47 tries in 67 games at High-A. His 18.5 percent strikeout rate and 11.4 percent walk rate were also impressive, but Hamilton turns 24 in September, so he was pretty old for a legitimate prospect at that level. Double-A will be a much more telling test for the lefty-hitting speedster.
