Player Outlook
Brandon Williamson looked worn out down the stretch in 2023, which was probably predictable given that it was his first big-league season. An early-September stint on the COVID IL may have also been a critical tipping point. Prior to the diagnosis, the 25-year-old left-hander held a 4.20 ERA and 87 strikeouts through 98.2 innings and was sitting 94-95 mph with his fastball. Following his return to the Reds' active roster, he gave up 12 earned runs and an .858 opponents' OPS across his final four starts covering 18.2 innings, with his fastball velocity dropping into the 91-92 mph range. Williamson will have to compete for an Opening Day rotation spot this spring and aim to rediscover the form that saw him register a 3.15 ERA and 58:16 K:BB in 60 innings (11 starts) between July and August last year. He should be on watch lists either way.

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Shifts to injured list

The Reds placed Williamson (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday. The left-hander exited his March 17 start with a left shoulder strain and won't be available to begin the regular season. Andrew Abbott is rounding out Cincinnati's rotation, at least until Nick Lodolo (lower leg) is ready.

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Bound for injured list

Williamson (shoulder) will begin the season on the injured list, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Williamson left Sunday's game against Cleveland early due to shoulder soreness, and his injury is apparently severe enough to cause him to miss the first few weeks of the regular season. Manager David Bell said Tuesday that Williamson will be shut down from throwing for a couple of days, and there is no timetable currently in place for his return. With Williamson out, Andrew Abbott will fill the final spot in the Reds' Opening Day rotation.

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Competing for rotation spot

Reds manager David Bell said Monday that Williamson (shoulder) is competing with Andrew Abbott for the fifth spot in the rotation, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. Bell also added that Williamson is feeling better after having to exit an appearance Sunday with a sore left shoulder, although it's not clear when he might be cleared to pitch again. Whoever wins the fifth spot might just be keeping the seat warm for Nick Lodolo (lower leg), who could be back by April 10.

Williamson left Sunday's spring training game against the Guardians with shoulder soreness, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Manager David Bell revealed why Williamson had to leave the game early. The pitcher was taken out of the game due to soreness in his left shoulder. The Reds are hopeful that it is nothing serious. In three spring training appearances, the 25-year-old had allowed four earned runs with nine strikeouts and zero walks in 9.0 innings.

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Makes second spring appearance

Williamson allowed three runs on five hits and struck out three over three innings in Friday's spring start against Arizona. This was Williamson's second Cactus League appearance and first start. The Diamondbacks touched him for runs in the first two innings, before the left-hander ripped off a perfect third frame. Williamson was included as the fifth starter in the latest roster projection from Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. That represents a change from Sheldon's first projection, which had Nick Lodolo (tibia) at the back end of the rotation. Recent news that Lodolo will undergo additional testing clouds the final spot.

The rookie has started 22 games for the Reds spanning 111 innings and will carry a 4.54 ERA into his final start of the regular season, scheduled to take place next weekend in St. Louis.

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Slated to return Tuesday

Williamson (illness) will return from the COVID-19-related injured list to start Tuesday against the Tigers, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Williamson will have gone exactly two weeks between starts, as he was placed on the COVID-19 list Sept. 2 after making his last appearance for the Reds four days earlier. The left-hander had turned in two straight quality starts before going on the list, but he's been an up-and-down performer this season and might not be ready for a full workload Tuesday.

Williamson has had a few blow-ups this season but has been mostly consistent, giving up three or fewer earned runs in 14 of his 18 outings. He had a slight hiccup against the Cubs in his last start following a dominant July. The 25-year-old posted a 2.45 ERA in five starts last month but yielded five runs in his most recent appearance to kick off August. Williamson will carry a 4.54 ERA into his next outing, which is projected to be in Pittsburgh.

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Can't get out of fifth inning

Williamson allowed five runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven batters in a no-decision against the Cubs on Wednesday. Williamson got enough early run support to hold a 5-3 lead through four innings, but he allowed two of the first three batters he faced to reach base in the fifth before getting the hook. Both runners came around to score after his departure, marking the first time Williamson has allowed five runs in an outing since he yielded six to the Dodgers on June 7. The southpaw as least managed to contribute seven punchouts in the start Wednesday despite notching just four swings-and-misses. Williamson came out of the All-Star break by picking up two wins and posting a 2.55 ERA over his first three starts, but it's uncertain if he'll hold onto a rotation spot when Hunter Greene (hip) and Nick Lodolo (lower leg) return from the injured list, which is expected to happen later this month. Williamson should have at least a few more starts to prove himself before the Reds need to make that decision.

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Escapes with win

Williamson (3-2) allowed two runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out two over 5.2 innings to pick up the win Friday over the Dodgers. Williamson has a 4.48 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 48:27 K:BB through 64.1 innings through 13 starts this year. He's projected for a road start versus the Cubs next week.

Williamson got off to a red-hot start Saturday, retiring the first nine batters he faced while not allowing a hit until the fifth inning. Though the southpaw had only logged one quality start through his first 10 appearances, he's rattled of back-to-back quality starts to lower his season ERA to 4.60 to go along with a 46:23 K:BB. However, he'll face a challenge in nabbing a third straight quality start considering his next outing is tentatively scheduled to come on the road against the Dodgers.

Williamson didn't factor into the decision Monday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three over six innings in a 4-2 loss to the Giants. It was the third time in Williamson's last four starts that rain impacted the game. The left-hander gave up another two home runs, increasing his count allowed to 10 over 52.2 innings (1.7 HR/9).
