  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Takes loss in bulk relief

Marsh (3-9) took the loss in Saturday's 5-2 loss against the Yankees. He allowed three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six over 4.1 innings. The 25-year-old operated in his now-customary role of bulk reliever after opener Steven Cruz fired a scoreless first inning. Marsh surrendered two runs in the fourth and was charged with a third after his removal with one out in the sixth, giving New York the lead and handing the right-hander a loss. In five outings since becoming a full-time bulk reliever Sept. 8, Marsh went 3-1 with a 4.43 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 25:10 K:BB across 22.1 innings. He'll end his rookie campaign with a 3-9 record, 5.69 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 85:39 K:BB over 17 appearances (74.1 innings).

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Earns win in bulk role

Marsh (3-8) picked up the win as the bulk reliever Sunday against the Astros. He allowed four runs on three hits and two walks while striking out six over 5.1 innings. Marsh was shaky in this outing as he yielded four runs, but his offense provided enough support to pick up the win. However, the 25-year-old has performed admirably overall as a bulk reliever since moving into that role full-time Sept. 8. In four outings since then, he has gone 3-0 with a 4.50 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 19:7 K:BB over 18 innings. Marsh's next and final bulk outing of the year should occur against the Yankees, assuming the Royals keep the same rotation schedule.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Snags win as bulk reliever

Marsh (2-8) picked up the win Tuesday, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk over 4.1 relief innings in a 7-6 victory over the Guardians. He struck out two. Taking the mound after opener Steven Cruz had loaded the bases with two outs in the second inning, Marsh escaped that jam but created ones for himself in the fifth and sixth innings, although he never relinquished the early lead Kansas City had built up. After going 0-8 through his first 13 big-league games, the 25-year-old righty has recorded the win in back-to-back outings, and he's worked at least four innings in three straight appearances as a bulk reliever, posting a respectable 3.55 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB through 12.2 innings over that stretch. If he stays on turn, Marsh will likely see action twice more before the regular season comes to a close -- Sept. 26 in Detroit, and then during Kansas City's final game Oct. 1 at home against the Yankees.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Earns first big-league win

Marsh (1-8) allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out five over 4.1 innings to earn the win Wednesday over the White Sox. Marsh earned his first major-league win in this contest. He was sharp as the bulk reliever following two scoreless innings from Steven Cruz. Marsh gave up a run in the seventh, but the White Sox never made much of a challenge for the lead. The rookie right-hander now has a 5.67 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 71:33 K:BB through 60.1 innings over 14 appearances (eight starts). He's been more effective following an opener, so he may do that again for his next appearance, tentatively scheduled to be at home versus the Guardians next week.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Fans six in bulk role

Marsh didn't factor into the decision Friday in the Royals' 5-4 loss to the Blue Jays, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over four relief innings. He struck out six. Entering the game to begin the third inning after Collin Snider had supplied two scoreless frames as the opener, Marsh looked sharp as he generated 23 called or swinging strikes on only 65 pitches. The right-hander was briefly in line for his first win of the season when Kansas City took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh, but the bullpen immediately fell apart in the bottom of the inning. Marsh has given up three runs or fewer in five of his last six outings, and while a blowup against Boston has left him with a 5.14 ERA and 1.57 WHIP during that stretch, his 34:14 K:BB through 28 innings at least shows some promise. His next appearance, whether as a starter or bulk reliever, is likely to come on the road next week against the White Sox.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Hit hard in Saturday's loss

Marsh (0-8) took the loss Saturday as the Royals were downed 9-5 by the Red Sox, surrendering six runs on seven hits and two walks over 2.2 innings. He struck out one. Five of the seven hits off Marsh went for extra bases, including a two-run homer by Triston Casas in the first inning. It's the most runs the right-hander has given up in an outing this season, but his luck may have been due to run out -- since rejoining the rotation in early August, the 25-year-old has a 5.59 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 33:15 K:BB through 29 innings. If he stays on turn, Marsh would next head to the mound next weekend in Toronto.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Fans nine in loss

Marsh (0-7) yielded three runs on five hits and two walks over 5.2 innings Sunday, striking out nine and taking a loss against the Mariners. Oddly enough, Marsh turned in his second straight outing in which he allowed three runs and struck out nine over 5.2 frames. He also forced a season-high 16 whiffs. The right-handed rookie has registered a 5.47 ERA with a 59:27 K:BB through 49.1 innings this season, though he produced a solid 4.10 ERA in 26.1 frames in August. Marsh's next outing is lined up to be at home against the Red Sox.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Getting start Sunday

Marsh will start for the Royals on Sunday in Seattle, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Marsh has been used more as a bulk reliever lately, but he won't be following an opener this time. The left-hander will be tasked with holding down a Mariners lineup that hit seven home runs and scored 15 runs Saturday. Marsh has surrendered 12 homers in just 43.2 innings this season.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Working behind opener Wednesday

Marsh will serve as the Royals' bulk reliever behind opener James McArthur in Wednesday's game against the Mariners, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Marsh will enter the game behind an opener for his second straight turn through the rotation after he turned in quality results his last time out Thursday in Boston. Though he ultimately took the loss to drop to 0-6 on the season, Marsh limited the Red Sox to two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three over five innings.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Working in bulk relief Thursday

Marsh will serve as the Royals' bulk reliever behind opener Austin Cox in Thursday's game in Boston, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Since recording a career-high 11 strikeouts in his third MLB start July 15 versus the Rays, Marsh has labored over his last four outings (three starts), compiling an 8.31 ERA and 1.92 WHIP over that stretch while striking out no more than four batters on any occasion. The Royals will have Marsh enter the game behind an opener with the hope that the arrangement delivers better results from the young right-hander. If Marsh struggles again, however, he could be at risk of losing his spot in Kansas City's rotation.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Goes four innings Saturday

Marsh allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four over four innings in a no-decision versus the Phillies on Saturday. Marsh was working on short rest after a relief appearance Tuesday in which he threw a scoreless inning. He wasn't at his best for this outing, but he was able to avoid the loss after the Royals' fifth-inning rally. Marsh has a 6.75 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 32:17 K:BB through 28 innings over seven outings (six starts) this season. He remains in search of his first win, with his next chance to pick it up tentatively scheduled to be a road start in Boston.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Works in relief Tuesday

Marsh struck out one and allowed no hits and one walk while tossing a scoreless sixth inning out of the bullpen in Tuesday's 7-6 extra-inning win over the Mets. Marsh had been lined up to start Wednesday's contest, but the Royals surprisingly summoned him from the bullpen Tuesday after starter Zack Greinke was pulled following the fifth inning. As a result of Marsh's usage in relief, the Royals will call up Cole Ragans from Triple-A Omaha to make a spot start Wednesday. Marsh is now lined up to make his next start at some point during this weekend's series in Philadelphia.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Falls to 0-5

Marsh (0-5) took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks over 2.2 innings against the Guardians. He struck out three. It was another tough outing for Marsh, who needed 75 pitches to make it through just 2.2 innings. The rookie right-hander has been tagged with a loss in all five of his MLB starts thus far -- his ERA is up to 7.04 with a 1.65 WHIP and 27:14 K:BB across 23 innings. Despite his early struggles, the rebuilding Royals will likely keep Marsh in the rotation for an extended look. His next start would be lined up for next week against the Mets.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Fans 11 in defeat

Marsh (0-3) took the loss against Tampa Bay in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out 11 batters over six innings. Though he ended up with the loss, Marsh enjoyed easily the best start of his big-league career thus far. The rookie right-hander racked up 16 swinging strikes and 11 punchouts after fanning 10 batters across his first two starts combined. Marsh served up a pair of solo homers but otherwise kept the Rays at bay to record his first career quality start. Given the impressive effort against one of the league's top offenses, it seems likely that Marsh will get at least one more turn in the rotation, and he could stick around permanently if he is able to build upon Saturday's strong performance.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Knocked around in debut

Marsh (0-1) allowed five runs on six hits and four walks while striking out five over four-plus innings to take the loss Friday versus the Dodgers. Marsh drew a tough assignment for his debut, and it took Mookie Betts just five pitches to welcome the right-hander to the majors with a homer. Betts also went yard in the third inning and added an RBI single in the fourth after Marsh ran into more trouble. He had a combined 4.62 ERA and 1.52 WHIP over 62.1 innings between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha prior to his debut, and it's likely Marsh will be heading back to the minors once Jordan Lyles (illness) is healthy.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Officially promoted

The Royals recalled Marsh ahead of his start Friday against the Dodgers. Friday will mark the 25-year-old righty's MLB debut after he put up a 2.40 ERA and 1.33 WHIP through 15 innings with Triple-A Omaha. Marsh will be filling in for Jordan Lyles, who was scratched from his scheduled start due to illness, and will most likely return to the minors after his spot start. James McArthur was optioned to Omaha in a corresponding move.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: To make MLB debut Friday

Marsh will be called up from Triple-A Omaha to start for the Royals on Friday versus the Dodgers, Jaylon T. Thompson of The Kansas City Star reports. Jordan Lyles was supposed to take that turn, but he's been scratched because of an illness. Marsh, a second-round pick in the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Arizona State, has pitched to a rather uninspiring 4.62 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 75:31 K:BB in 62.1 innings (14 starts) this season between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Omaha. He's not a recommended fantasy streamer against Los Angeles.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Sent to Double-A

Marsh was optioned to Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Friday. Marsh spent a brief amount of time in Triple-A toward the end of last season, but he will return to Double-A to begin the 2023 campaign. He logged a 7.32 ERA and 1.67 WHIP through 114.1 Double-A innings last year.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Contract selected

Marsh's contract was selected by the Royals on Tuesday. The move means Marsh won't be available for selection in the Rule 5 draft. Marsh spent the bulk of last season with Double-A Northwest Arkansas, where he struggled to a 7.32 ERA in 25 starts despite a 27.4 percent strikeout rate.

  • Royals' Alec Marsh: Whiffs nine in 2022 debut

Marsh (undisclosed) covered 4.2 innings for Double-A Northwest Arkansas in Wednesday's 8-5 win over Wichita, striking out nine while allowing two earned runs on two hits and two walks. Marsh didn't make any appearances after June 15 of last season due to an unspecified injury, but he's seemingly back to full health to begin the 2022 campaign. He pitched well in his season debut Wednesday, pumping in 52 of 77 pitches for strikes while holding opposing hitters to a .125 average on the night. Since Marsh only made six starts for Northwest Arkansas in 2021, the Royals may want to give the 23-year-old an extended look at Double-A to begin the season before entertaining a promotion to Triple-A Omaha.
