Canterino (shoulder) has started throwing between 40-60 feet, Betsy Helfland of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Canterino suffered a rotator cuff strain in mid-March. There's no timetable for his return, but at least he's started to make progress. The right-hander missed all of 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, so expect the Twins to be cautious with his return.... See More ... See Less

Twins' Matt Canterino: Moves to injured list
Canterino (shoulder) was placed on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A St. Paul on Friday, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Canterino suffered a rotator cuff strain in mid-March, so it's not a surprise he's beginning the season on the shelf. The right-hander missed all of 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery.... Twins' Matt Canterino: Suffers shoulder strain
Canterino will begin the season on the injured list at Triple-A St. Paul with a right subscapularis strain, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Canterino was sent to minor-league camp a week ago and now is hurt. It's not clear how long he might be sidelined. Injuries are unfortunately nothing new for Canterino, who missed all of the 2023 season following Tommy John surgery.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Matt Canterino: Optioned to Double-A
Canterino (elbow) was optioned to to Double-A Wichita on Saturday. Canterino is expected to miss most of the 2023 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last August. The 25-year-old had a 1.83 ERA across 34.1 innings for Double-A Wichita prior to the injury.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Matt Canterino: Starts up rehab assignment
Canterino (elbow) has struck out four while allowing one run on three hits and one walk in 2.2 innings between two appearances since beginning a rehab assignment Monday with the Twins' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate. Canterino has been shut down at Double-A Wichita since early June with a right elbow strain, but he should be ready to rejoin the affiliate within the next couple of weeks. Prior to being deactivated, the 24-year-old turned in a 1.83 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 50:22 K:BB over 34.1 innings for Wichita.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Matt Canterino: Placed on injured list
Canterino was placed on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Wichita on Wednesday. He's battling elbow tendinitis, Darren Wolfson of Channel 5 Saint Paul reports. This is worrisome since a right elbow strain ended his 2021 season in mid-August, but Wolfson reports the team hopes he can return in two weeks. Canterino is one of Minnesota's top pitching prospects and looked impressive with a 1.83 ERA and 50:22 K:BB ratio in 34.1 innings at Double-A.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Matt Canterino: Rounding into form at Double-A
Canterino has a 2.79 ERA with 14 strikeouts and eight walks over 9.2 innings in his first four starts at Double-A Wichita. Canterino has given up too many walks early in the season, but the more important thing is that he looks healthy after a right elbow strain ended his 2021 season in mid-August. He pitched just three innings in his last start as the team manages his workload on his way back from injury.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Matt Canterino: Begins rehab assignment
Canterino (elbow) struck out two over two perfect innings Sunday in a rehab start at Low-A Fort Myers. Canterino has been sidelined at High-A Cedar Rapids since late May with a right elbow strain, but he looks on track to return from the 7-day injured list in short order. The Twins may want to have Canterino get in one more tune-up outing at Low-A before slotting him back into the Cedar Rapids rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Matt Canterino: Could return in August
Canterino (elbow) is hoping to return to action sometime in August, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports. He has missed over two months with an elbow strain, but for now it seems the plan is for him to avoid surgery and get back on the mound this season. Canterino was dominant through four starts with High-A Cedar Rapids before suffering the injury, logging a 1.00 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 35:3 K:BB in 18 innings (four starts). While he has a very high ceiling, he is not out of the woods yet from a health standpoint.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Matt Canterino: Avoids structural damage
Canterino has been diagnosed with right elbow inflammation after undergoing an MRI, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. The 23-year-old was placed on the 7-day injured list by High-A Cedar Rapids on Saturday, but he's not dealing with any structural issues with his elbow. It's unclear how long Canterino is expected to be sidelined, but it appears he's avoided a serious injury.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Matt Canterino: Dominating at High-A
Canterino has a 1.00 ERA and 35 strikeouts with three walks over 18 innings in his first four starts for High-A Cedar Rapids. Canterino was the Twins' second-round pick in the 2019 first-year player draft, and spent some time last season at the alternate training site for developmental purposes. As a 23-year old pitcher out of college, he could advance quickly if he continues to dominate at High-A.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Matt Canterino: Invited to big-league camp
The Twins announced Monday that Canterino will receive an invitation to big-league spring training as a non-roster invitee. Canterino, Trevor Larnach, Royce Lewis and Aaron Sabato are among the Twins' higher-rated prospects who will get a look with the big club this spring. A 2019 second-round draft pick, Canterino hasn't pitched above the Low-A level, so he won't be a serious candidate to break camp with the Twins. Since the 23-year-old had high-level college experience at Rice before being drafted, the Twins could still choose to move him through their system more aggressively than most of their other recently-drafted pitchers. Look for the Twins to assign him to High-A Cedar Rapids or Double-A Wichita to begin the 2021 campaign after he lost out on development time in 2020 due to the cancellation of the minor-league season....
