  • Jaylin Davis: Hits free agency

The Mets released Davis on July 16. The 29-year-old outfielder saw time in the big leagues with the Giants from 2019 through 2021 and with the Red Sox in 2022, but he played exclusively in the minors during his first season in the Mets organization. Over 309 plate appearances at Triple-A Syracuse, Davis slashed .224/.343/.440 with 13 home runs and two stolen bases before getting cut loose shortly after the All-Star break. Davis will seek out another minor-league deal elsewhere or perhaps explore his options overseas now that he's a free agent.

Davis will have a chance to win a backup role but will face an uphill battle. The outfielder spent 2022 in the Giants and Red Sox organizations, and was successful in a brief sample with a .333/.407/.375 slash line over 27 plate appearances for Boston after he was claimed off waivers from San Francisco last April.

Davis opted for free agency Thursday, per the MILB transaction log. Davis lost his spot on Boston's 40-man roster on Sept. 12, and he spent the rest of the season with Triple-A Worcester. Prior to being designated for assignment he hit .333/.407/.375 across only 27 plate appearances with Boston.

The Red Sox outrighted Davis to Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports. He remains in the organization after going unclaimed off waivers upon being designated for assignment Monday. The 28-year-old outfielder saw action in 12 games with Boston earlier in the season but has otherwise spent the bulk of the campaign at Worcester, with whom he's slashed .198/.315/.318 with a 30.8 percent strikeout rate across 305 plate appearances.

  • Red Sox's Jaylin Davis: DFA'd on Monday

The Red Sox designated Davis for assignment Monday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Davis, who's been in the minors since Aug. 15, loses his 40-man roster spot. Despite going 8-for-24 in 12 games with Boston this season, the outfielder doesn't appear likely to generate much interest on waivers.

  • Red Sox's Jaylin Davis: Optioned to Triple-A

Davis was optioned to Triple-A Worcester following Sunday's win over the Yankees. Davis will return to Worcester after he batted .300 with a double, two RBI and four runs over 20 at-bats in nine games since getting called up July 23. The move clears a roster spot for Enrique Hernandez (hip), who is expected to return from the 60-day injured list Tuesday.

  • Giants' Jaylin Davis: Back from IL, optioned to Triple-A

Davis (hamstring) was activated from the 10-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Monday. Davis finished up his rehab assignment but will remain at Triple-A after returning to health. He's seen little action with the big club so far this season (1-for-9 with a double in five games) but should be a candidate for a promotion when rosters expand later on.

Davis exited Monday's loss to the Cardinals with a strained left hamstring and will undergo an MRI, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Davis went 0-for-3 before being lifted from Monday's contest with the injury. It's a tough break for the 27-year-old, who was activated from the injured list Thursday after missing the first three months of the season with knee tendinitis.

  • Giants' Jaylin Davis: Begins rehab assignment

Davis (knee) has reported to Triple-A Sacramento to begin a rehab assignment, Mark W. Sanchez of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. Davis has been out since the start of the regular season due to left knee tendinitis, but he appears to be nearing his return to full health. The 26-year-old may remain with the Triple-A club once his rehab assignment is complete, but he should rejoin the major-league roster at some point this year if he performs well in the minors.

  • Giants' Jaylin Davis: Shifts to 60-day IL

Davis (knee) was recalled and placed on the 60-day injured list Sunday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. The 26-year-old was ruled out 4-to-6 weeks at the start of April with left knee tendinitis, and he'll now likely be sidelined until June. Davis was recalled as a procedural move so he could be shifted to the 60-day IL in order to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Thairo Estrada.

  • Giants' Jaylin Davis: Out several weeks with knee injury

Davis has left knee tendinitis and will be out 4-to-6 weeks, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Davis was sent to the minors in mid-March after hitting .200 with 12 strikeouts in 22 spring plate appearances. He hits the ball hard and has impressive raw power, but Davis has been unable to break through with a significant big-league role. Look for him to get another look sometime this summer if he is performing well at Triple-A once fully healthy.

  • Giants' Jaylin Davis: Sent to minors

The Giants optioned Davis to their minor-league camp Monday. Since being acquired from the Twins at the 2019 trade deadline, Davis has struggled in his limited opportunities at the big-league level, slashing a collective .167/.237/.278 in 59 plate appearances across the past two seasons. All of Mike Yastrzemski, Alex Dickerson, Mauricio Dubon and Austin Slater were clearly ahead of Davis for playing time in the San Francisco outfield, so the 26-year-old will likely head to Triple-A Sacramento pick up regular work.

  • Giants' Jaylin Davis: Dealing with sore knee

Giants manager Gabe Kapler said Thursday that Davis has had some knee soreness but will return to the lineup soon, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Davis has yet to appear in a Cactus League game this year, but Kapler's update provides an explanation for his absence. However, Davis ran the bases Thursday, and the team doesn't sound too concerned about his long-term health. Once he's fully healthy, Davis should compete for a spot on the major-league roster.

  • Giants' Jaylin Davis: Not starting Wednesday

Davis is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Padres, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Austin Slater is starting in right field for Davis, who is sitting for the first time in four games. Davis is 2-for-12 with a home run and six strikeouts this season.

  • Giants' Jaylin Davis: Goes deep in loss

Davis went 1-for-3 with a solo home run during Friday's loss at Dodger Stadium. Making his season debut, Davis drove an opposite field home run against Ross Stripling in the third inning to get the Giants on the board. The right-handed outfielder is expected to share a platoon role with Joe McCarthy, who earned the start in Thursday's Opening Day loss. Last season, Davis played in 17 games, batting a mere .167 with one home run.

  • Giants' Jaylin Davis: Likely to get extended playing time

The Giants are motivated to evaluate Davis at the major-league level this year, Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group reports. It is not a lock that he opens the year in the majors, but once he is up, the expectation is that Davis will play a lot for the Giants as they look to evaluate whether he can be a long-term piece. He hit 35 home runs across Double-A and Triple-A last season but stumbled in a cup of coffee with the big-league club. Davis is also very fast, but he does not put his speed to work much on the bases. On the whole, he hit .294 and despite being right-handed, he hit better against righties than lefties, so perhaps he will get everyday at-bats at some point this season.

Across 13 games, Davis is batting just .152/.243/.242, though he holds imminent power potential.
