The catching position is not an everyday job. Even for the best of catchers in baseball that do not play in Kansas City, the position is a 4-5 starts a week role while the backup gets Sunday day games and mid-week getaway games behind the plate. Brian Serven fills the latter role for the Rockies behind Elias Diaz and there is no danger in those two roles changing any time soon. Sure, they did in June of 2022 while Serven caught lightning in a bottle, but the backup catcher has hit .145/.194/.234 since July first of last year while the club extended Diaz to a new contract after being reminded what their fallback option was, or was not. Serven can throw with the best of them, but he has no fantasy viability in any league format unless something were to happen to Diaz and playing time was forced onto him.

  • Blue Jays' Brian Serven: Added to roster

The Blue Jays selected Serven's contract from Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports. Serven will be the Jays' backup catcher while Danny Jansen (wrist) is sidelined to begin the season. He's a career .195/.248/.314 hitter in the majors and should see occasional action behind starter Alejandro Kirk.

  • Blue Jays' Brian Serven: Launches third spring homer

Serven went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins. One day after Danny Jansen suffered a broken bone in his wrist, Serven got the start at catcher and took Bailey Ober deep in the first inning for his third long ball of the spring. The former Rockie appears to be in line to back up Alejandro Kirk at catcher to begin the season, batting .313 (5-for-16) in camp with all five hits going for extra bases, but it's highly unlikely that kind of offensive performance will carry forward should he get significant playing time. In 228 big-league plate appearances, more than half of which came at Coors Field, Serven has a meager .195/.248/.314 slash line.

  • Blue Jays' Brian Serven: Sent outright to Triple-A

Serven was outrighted to Triple-A Buffalo on Monday. The Blue Jays quietly designated Serven for assignment and will send him to Triple-A now that he's passed through waivers. He was claimed by Toronto in mid-January and figures to serve as organizational depth at catcher.

  • Blue Jays' Brian Serven: Claimed by Blue Jays

The Blue Jays claimed Serven off waivers from the Cubs on Tuesday, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. Serven has gone from the Rockies to the Cubs and now to the Blue Jays via waivers this month. The 28-year-old has slashed just .195/.248/.314 over 228 plate appearances at the major-league level, even as his home games have been played at Coors Field. Serven does have options remaining and, if he's still with the Blue Jays come Opening Day, he seems likely to be assigned to their Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo.

  • Cubs' Brian Serven: Claimed by Cubbies

The Cubs claimed Serven off waivers from the Rockies on Friday. The Rockies dumped Serven from their 40-man roster in order to make room for Jacob Stallings, who signed with the club Friday. Serven managed to slash just .199/.241/.331 across 162 plate appearances with Colorado's Triple-A affiliate, and he'll almost certainly return to the minors to begin his tenure with the Cubs.

  • Rockies' Brian Serven: Optioned to Triple-A

Colorado optioned Serven to Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday. Jorge Alfaro has been brought up by the Rockies in a corresponding roster move to help at catcher and mix in at DH. Serven, 28, is batting just .130 with a .304 OPS in 23 plate appearances this year at the major-league level.

  • Rockies' Brian Serven: Summoned from minors

Colorado recalled Serven from Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. Serven hit just .130 with a .304 OPS over 23 plate appearances before being optioned to Triple-A in early May. While he's back up with the Rockies, Serven will provide depth behind the plate, though he could see more playing time if Elias Diaz (head) requires a stint on the injured list.

  • Rockies' Brian Serven: Optioned to Triple-A

Serven was optioned Friday to Triple-A Albuquerque. Austin Wynns, claimed off waivers from the Dodgers on Thursday, will join the Rockies as the new backup to starting catcher Elias Diaz. Serven was just 3-for-23 (.130) with no walks and 10 strikeouts through 10 games this season with Colorado.

  • Rockies' Brian Serven: Striking out at alarming clip

Serven has struck out 20 times across 42 plate appearances during Cactus League games this spring. Serven is all but locked into a roster spot, so even his slow spring performance isn't likely to change his status for Opening Day. However, he may lose out on playing time to Elias Diaz -- the Rockies' other catcher that will start the campaign in the majors --until he can show he can get back on track at the dish.

  • Rockies' Brian Serven: Back on bench with Diaz healthy

Serven is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rangers, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. Elias Diaz will check back in behind the plate Tuesday after being reinstated from the injured list Sunday, spelling an end to Serven's three-game starting streak. The return of Diaz will also likely result in Serven falling into a timeshare at catcher, if not the clear-cut No. 2 role. While Diaz was on the shelf with the hand injury he picked up Aug. 10, Serven slashed .185/.267/.444.

  • Rockies' Brian Serven: Hits sixth home run

Serven went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's extra-innings loss to the Giants. Serven's sixth home run of the season was a two-run shot to tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning. The 27-year-old has started 10 of the last 11 games for the Rockies since primary catcher Elias Diaz went down with a wrist injury. Serven is hitting just .229 on the season, but he owned a .265 average at Coors Field entering the afternoon, so he could be a serviceable option at catcher during weeks the Rockies are at home.

  • Rockies' Brian Serven: Homers in Friday's win

Serven went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 5-3 win over the Diamondbacks. Elias Diaz (shoulder) went on the injured list Friday, so it appears Serven will get a look as the starting catcher for a while. He made a good impression Friday with his fifth homer of the year, tying the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning. The 27-year-old has gone 6-for-17 (.353) in August, lifting his season slash line to .244/.308/.412 through 130 plate appearances. He's added 13 RBI, 16 runs scored, three doubles and a triple. Serven will likely hit at the bottom of the order even as a regular starter, though a favorable home park could make him an intriguing waiver-wire add during Diaz's absence.

  • Rockies' Brian Serven: Connects for fourth homer

Serven went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 7-3 loss to the Dodgers. Serven will be happy to put July behind him -- he went 3-for-37 (.081) with a home run, a double, four runs scored and a 3:8 BB:K in 12 contests this month. That poor performance at the plate mostly erased the gains he'd made in June to earn a split of playing time with Elias Diaz, and it appears Serven is more or less back to a backup role. He's slashing .225/.295/.382 with four homers, 10 RBI, 12 runs scored, two doubles and a triple in 112 plate appearances this year.

  • Rockies' Brian Serven: Alternating starts with Diaz

Serven is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. Serven appeared to solidify himself as the Rockies' top backstop in mid-June, but he and Elias Diaz have since fallen into a near-even timeshare behind the dish. The two have alternated starts at catcher for 12 consecutive contests, with Serven going 1-for-19 with a double, two walks, two runs and no RBI in his six starts during that stretch.

  • Rockies' Brian Serven: Still not starting

Serven isn't in the lineup Saturday against Minnesota. Serven has lost out on playing time behind the dish recently, and he'll be out of the lineup for a fourth consecutive game. Elias Diaz -- who appears to have carved out a role as the Rockies' primary catcher -- is starting behind the dish and batting eighth Saturday.

  • Rockies' Brian Serven: Sitting again Thursday

Serven is not in the starting lineup for Thursday's series finale against the Marlins, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. Serven will sit for the second game in a row Thursday as Elias Diaz draws the start at catcher, batting seventh. The two men continue to split time behind the plate with neither of them commanding the lion's share of playing time.

  • Rockies' Brian Serven: Sitting Wednesday

Serven is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Marlins, Serven will get a day off Wednesday after he went 0-for-5 with two punchouts in Tuesday's loss. Elias Diaz will take over behind the plate and bat eighth.

  • Rockies' Brian Serven: Resting Sunday

Serven is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres. Elias Diaz will receive a turn behind the dish after Serven caught in five of the Rockies' previous six contests. Serven went 7-for-16 with two extra-base hits and three walks during that stretch to boost his season OPS to .923. So long as he's wielding a hot bat, Serven should continue to play regularly over Diaz.

  • Rockies' Brian Serven: Shines at bottom of order

Serven went 4-for-4 with two runs scored in Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Guardians. Entering Thursday, Serven had already started behind the dish in four of the Rockies' previous seven games, and his perfect showing at the plate in the series finale with Cleveland likely further solidified him ahead of Elias Diaz on the depth chart at catcher. Serven batted out of the No. 9 spot Thursday, but with the rookie's slash line now sitting at an excellent .333/.382/.549 through his first 55 big-league plate appearances, manager Bud Black could consider moving him up in the order.

  • Rockies' Brian Serven: Stealing work from Elias Diaz

Serven will start at catcher and bat ninth in Thursday's game against the Guardians. Now in the lineup for the fifth time in eight games, Serven appears to have overtaken Elias Diaz as the Rockies' preferred catcher for the time being. Since being called up to the big leagues May 17, Serven has hit .277 with three home runs, nine RBI and five runs in 51 plate appearances. If his playing time continues to trend upward from here, Serven could prove to be a viable fantasy option even in leagues that start one catcher, particularly in weeks in which the Rockies have a homestand.
