Player Outlook
Grayson Rodriguez's overall numbers were not impressive, but you see a better story once you break down his season. He surprisingly opened the season with Baltimore, but went 2-2 in 10 starts with a 7.35 ERA as he struggled with homers allowing 13 home runs in 45.1 innings around 56 strikeouts and 21 walks. The front office sent him down to AAA Norfolk where he shoved to a 4-0 record with a 1.96 ERA over 8 starts with improved command, which earned him a recall to the big leagues during the All-Star break. From there, all he did was go 5-2 with a 2.58 ERA over his final 13 starts while allowing 3 homers in 76.2 innings with 73 strikeouts and 21 walks. Rodriguez ramped up his fantasy stock with his summer performance, but it comes at a cost as he increased his workload 118% from 2022 to 2023 jumping from 75.2 innings to 165 when factoring in his regular and postseason work. His previous season high was 103 innings in 2021, so keep that in mind as you consider reaching for his upside on draft day.

  • Orioles' Grayson Rodriguez: Adds new pitch to mix

Rodriguez is working on implementing a two-seam fastball for 2024, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports. Rodriguez leaned heavily on his four-seam fastball in 2023, and while he had a hearty 97.4-mph average on it, opponents also hit .342 and slugged .535 off the pitch. Rodriguez's goal for the two-seamer is to make it more of a running fastball relying on horizontal movement rather than vertical break, since he is not interested in having a sinker. The right-hander is also expecting to use his cutter less -- he threw it just 5.8 percent of the time last season with poor results. Rodriguez is looking to improve upon the 4.35 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 129:42 K:BB he posted over 122 innings last season, especially since he finished 2023 strong with a 2.58 ERA over his last 13 starts.

Rodriguez had a decent start to his MLB career during the regular season, pitching to a 4.35 ERA and 1.34 WHIP across 122 innings with 129 strikeouts.

That includes a 2.17 ERA and 32:7 K:BB over 29 innings in September.

Rodriguez (5-4) allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out six over 4.1 innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Red Sox. For the season, he's at a 4.88 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 110:39 K:BB through 103.1 innings over 20 starts. Rodriguez is projected to make his next start at home versus the Rays.

Rodriguez (2-3) took the loss Wednesday, giving up three runs on two hits and two walks over 5.2 innings as the Orioles fell 4-1 to the Blue Jays. He struck out six. The 23-year-old right-hander was stingy through five innings and nearly delivered his second straight quality start, but after walking two batters with two outs in the sixth, he got the hook and had to watch as Shintaro Fujinami loaded the bases on another free pass before plunking consecutive Toronto batters, with both runs going on Rodriguez's ledger. Since returning to the big-league rotation after the All-Star break, Rodriguez has posted a 3.57 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 20:8 K:BB through 22.2 innings. He'll look for a better result in his next start, likely to come at home early next week against the Astros.

  • Orioles' Grayson Rodriguez: Possible waiver wire pickups

The Orioles called Rodriguez back up to the majors and then basically threw him to the wolves, having him face the Dodgers and Rays in his first week back. The first outing could have gone better, but he basically held the Rays in check over 5 2/3 innings Saturday. He showed improved velocity in both starts and did a better job of mixing in his breaking balls in this one, which helped account for 17 whiffs on 93 pitches. Widely considered to be the best pitching prospect in baseball the past two years, he's looking the part again after a rough first couple months in the majors. His next start is against a Yankees lineup that's suffered greatly without Aaron Judge.

Prior to being sent down to the minors, Rodriguez had surrendered 18 runs over four starts (17.2 innings). However, with Cole Irvin shifting to the bullpen, it's likely Rodriguez will stick around in Baltimore's rotation.
