Player Outlook
It seems like Jonathan India and the Reds may be headed for divorce, as Cincinnati has made it known that the second baseman is available via trade. India was critical of how the team assessed his injury over the summer; a setback in his recovery prompted a second MRI which showed a more significant tear of his plantar fascia. He believed he should have been shut down for a longer period of time initially. Just a few short years ago, India was NL Rookie of the Year and looked like an important part of the team's long-term future, but the organization has seen an influx of young talent at the major-league level. India hit 17 homers and stole 14 bases in just 119 games last season, though his batted-ball numbers and sprint speed leave something to be desired. If he's dealt to a more pitcher-friendly park, India's numbers could take a hit. If he stays put, he could get lost in the shuffle.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Gets outfield start

India started in left field and went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's spring game against the Guardians. India batted leadoff and homered in the bottom of the first inning. He's transitioning to a utility role that will mostly involve him playing the infield, but the club has exposed him to outfield reps during camp. This was India's second Cactus League start, but the first one was rained out after four innings Friday. India will mostly see time at the three infield base positions.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Makes spring debut

India started at first base and went 0-for-2 with a walk before rain canceled Friday's spring game against the Dodgers. He flawlessly handled all chances in the field. India's spring was delayed by a foot injury that plagued him in 2023. He's shifting from second base to a utility role this season, which will impact his fantasy value. The position versatility is helpful, but a consistent path to at-bats is not guaranteed. The latter changed Friday when MLB suspended Noelvi Marte, who was the projected starter at third base, 80 games for violating the drug prevention and treatment program. That paves the way for India, Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Jeimer Candelario to get regular opportunities between first base, third base and designated hitter.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Set for Cactus League debut Friday

Reds manager David Bell said Wednesday that India (foot) is slated to make his Cactus League debut Friday against the Dodgers, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. India has been brought along slowly in the Reds' camp because he still wasn't completely recovered from the plantar fasciitis in his left foot that plagued him last season. It's not clear whether he's 100 percent yet, but he's at least feeling well enough to test out the foot in games. While he has played only second base to this point in his big-league career, India is slated to fill a utility role for Cincinnati this season.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Out multiple weeks

Reds manager David Bell said Saturday that India (foot) won't be able to play in Cactus League games until March 7 or 8, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. India recently suffered a setback with the plantar fasciitis in his left foot, and it seems the Reds will take it slow as he progresses in his running program. Once he's healthy, India is expected to take on a utility role, with Matt McLain (oblique) in line to become Cincinnati's primary second baseman.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Utility transition begins

India (toe) took grounders at second and third base during the early days of spring training, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. He's also been exposed to the outfield. India, who was Cincinnati's primary second baseman in 2023, was informed this offseason that Matt McLain (oblique) will see most of the opportunities at the keystone, leaving India to take on a utility role. That transition has begun. Reds manager David Bell said India will get opportunities at first base, second base, third base, left field and designated hitter. The 27-year-old India played third base in college, but the other fielding positions will be new.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Looking at utility role

India (foot) is expected to play three infield positions and possibly left field, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Cincinnati's primary second baseman in 2023, India will shift to a utility role, as manager David Bell plans to deploy a middle infield of Matt McLain at second and Elly De La Cruz at shortstop. To keep India's bat in the lineup, the infielder will get acclimated to playing first and third base, though left field is seen as his most unlikely landing spot. For now, India is building up endurance in the foot he injured last season and is expected to be ready for Cactus League play.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Still battling plantar fasciitis

India is going through a ramp-up progression after having a setback with the plantar fasciitis in his left foot this offseason, Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. India missed nearly two months of action during the second half of the 2023 season with the injury and it popped back up again over the winter, affecting his offseason workouts. The 27-year-old took batting practice and fielded ground balls Tuesday and the foot "feels fine and he feels no pain," Reds general manager Brad Meador said, adding that India just needs to build up endurance at this point. While it does seem as though he's currently trending in a positive direction, the nagging injury and uncertain playing time outlook for India creates a cloudy fantasy forecast.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Agrees to two-year contract

India signed a two-year, $8.8 million contract with the Reds on Friday to avoid arbitration, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. He can earn an additional $2.05 million in 2025 in incentives. India had been arbitration-eligible for the first time and will have one additional year of control in 2026. The 27-year-old slashed .244/.338/.407 with 17 home runs and 14 stolen bases over 119 contests for Cincinnati in 2023. India has played only second base to this point in the majors but is expected to be used at multiple positions in 2024.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Could see time at 1B, LF

India could see some playing time at first base and/or left field this season, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. It's looking like the Reds will hang onto India going into the season rather than trade him to alleviate some of their infield logjam. That would make for a difficult juggling act for manager David Bell as he looks to give everyone playing time, and it sounds like part of the solution could be to break India in at some new positions. To this point, the only position the 27-year-old has played with the Reds has been second base, although he did play plenty at third base and a little at shortstop in the minors.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Heading to arbitration

India is the one arbitration-eligible player that the Reds couldn't come to terms with before filing, and the two parties will likely go to a hearing, as the Reds are a "file-and-trial" team, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. India filed for $4.0 million and the Reds filed at $3.2 million, so the two parties are not especially close. India faces a critical season -- this is the first year he's arbitration-eligible and has to compete with the likes of Jeimer Candelario, Matt McLain and Christian Encarnacion-Strand for playing time. Some trade rumors regarding India have popped up from time to time, but nothing concrete has emerged. India has missed good chunks of time due to injury the last two seasons, and he hasn't come close to replicating his rookie year production (.269/.376/.459) over the last two campaigns.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: On base four times in win

India went 2-for-2 with one double, two walks and two runs scored in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Pirates. India reached base in all four plate appearances Sunday and scored the game-winning run in a contest the Reds desperately needed to win. Since being reinstated from the IL on Sept. 10 following a bout with plantar fasciitis, India had only five hits in his previous 42 at-bats going into Sunday's game. Over 509 plate appearances, India's now slashing .242/.334/.400 with 16 home runs, 58 RBI, 73 runs and 13 stolen bases.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Steps out of lineup

India is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets. India started all six games since he returned from the injured list last weekend, and he'll take a seat Sunday after he went 4-for-24 with two homers and five RBI. Spencer Steer will start at second base and bat leadoff for Cincinnati.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Slugs game-winning homer

India went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Friday's 5-3 victory over the Mets. The clutch two-run shot in the seventh served as the game-winner for the Reds. Despite the homer, India has only three hits in 20 at-bats over the course of five games since returning from a stint on the injured list due to plantar fasciitis. In 108 games played, he's now slashing .246/.331/.411 with 16 home runs, 57 RBI, 70 runs and 13 steals over 414 at-bats.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Reinstated early, starting Sunday

India (foot) was activated from the 10-day injured list and is starting at second base Sunday against the Cardinals, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The 26-year-old was previously expected to make his return from the injured list Tuesday in Detroit after starting a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Friday, but he'll instead rejoin Cincinnati for Sunday's series finale versus St. Louis. India has been sidelined since late July with plantar fasciitis but should operate as the Reds' primary second baseman down the stretch, though regular off days may be in store, especially given the club's glut of infield talent.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Begins rehab assignment

India (foot) went 1-for-2 with a walk, a double, two RBI and two runs scored for Triple-A Louisville on Friday. India kicked off a rehab assignment and was active on the left foot that cost him more than five weeks. Coming back from plantar fasciitis, he started at second base and played six innings. India will get at least another two games with the Bats and could return Tuesday, when the Reds begin a three-game set against the Tigers in Detroit.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: On track to return Tuesday

India (foot) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Friday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. India has been sidelined since late July with plantar fasciitis in his left foot but is ready to test things out in a game setting. He is expected to be activated Tuesday ahead of the Reds' series in Detroit. Cincinnati will have some lineup juggling to do once the 26-year-old returns, but with Matt McLain (oblique) also currently sidelined, India should be starting most days.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Rehab could begin Friday

India (foot) could begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville on Friday, if he continues on a positive path, MLB.com reports. India's left foot is pain free, but the Reds are taking a deliberate approach in building up the infielder to avoid a setback that could end his season prematurely. If he begins the rehab assignment this weekend as hoped, he could return from the 10-day injured list as soon as Sept. 12.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Ready to run

India (foot) traveled to the Reds' training complex in Goodyear (Ariz.) where he was slated to begin running on an anti-gravity treadmill Wednesday, MLB.com reports. The treadmill enables India to resume running without putting pressure on his injured foot. The infielder is also scheduled for another MRI to determine the status of the plantar fasciitis in his left foot. India received positive news from a specialist Tuesday and could return early September, if he suffers no setbacks.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Upset by original diagnosis

India (foot) expressed dismay at how the Reds originally assessed his plantar fasciitis injury, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. At issue for India is how long the team had him abstain from running. At the time of his injury in late July, the club prescribed a week of inactivity. India began rehab work and suffered a setback, prompting a second MRI from a doctor in Los Angeles, which revealed a more significant tear, per MLB.com. The doctor said India should have taken two weeks off before beginning rehab. The infielder, who was scratched from a start July 29 then added to the injured list, was shut down for two weeks as of last Friday and feels he would have been back had he been initially shut down for two weeks.

  • Reds' Jonathan India: Shut down for two weeks

India (foot) will receive a second opinion on his left foot and has been shut down from running for at least two weeks, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. India has reportedly been feeling pain while running, so the Reds will pause his rehab until late August, meaning his return to the lineup will have to wait until September. The 26-year-old second baseman was slashing .251/.336/.409 across 453 plate appearances prior to getting injured in late July.
