Orioles' Mike Baumann: Sent packing to Triple-A
Baumann was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
He'd pitched each of the previous two days, so the righty is being sent out in favor of a fresh relief arm in Tyler Wells. Baumann won't be eligible for recall before the end of the regular season unless he's replacing an injured player.... See More ... See Less
Orioles' Mike Baumann: Picks up 10th win
Baumann (10-1) allowed a run on one hit over 1.1 innings and earned the win Monday over the Astros.
Baumann gave up a solo home run to Martin Maldonado in the eighth inning, but he ended up in line for the win when Cedric Mullins' three-run blast put the Orioles ahead in the ninth. This was Baumann's second appearance since he was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday -- he pitched a scoreless inning versus the Rays that day. He's now at a 3.82 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 60:32 K:BB through 63.2 innings this season while adding six holds and two blown saves. Yennier Cano has seen most of the save chances since Felix Bautista (elbow) got hurt, but Baumann could mix in for some setup work if he stays on the major-league roster through the end of the regular season.... Orioles' Mike Baumann: Rejoins big-league bullpen
Baumann was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday.
Baumann was optioned in late August but had spent most of the first four months in the majors prior to that point. His 3.82 ERA in 61.1 innings of relief was entirely respectable, but his combination of a league-average 22.8 percent strikeout rate and a poor 12.0 percent walk rate means he's likely destined for no more than a low-leverage role. Bryan Baker was optioned in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less
Orioles' Mike Baumann: Takes first loss
Baumann (9-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits and struck out one over one inning to take the extra-inning loss Tuesday versus the Blue Jays.
Baumann has been a pleasant surprise for the Orioles in a versatile relief role, but he was ambushed Tuesday. Brandon Belt launched a go-ahead two-run home run and Vladimir Guerrero scored on a wild pitch to account for the runs. With a 5.59 ERA over 9.2 innings in August, Baumann has started to regress. He's at a 3.82 ERA with a 1.32 WHIP and 59:31 K:BB over 61.1 innings this season, though his 4.23 FIP suggests more regression could follow down the stretch.... See More ... See Less
Orioles' Mike Baumann: Heads to Triple-A
Baumann was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
Baumann took a loss as the Orioles fell to the Blue Jays in extra innings Tuesday, coughing up three runs (two earned) over his inning of relief. He now finds himself back in the minors after the Orioles reinstated Austin Voth (elbow) from the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less
Orioles' Mike Baumann: Collects ninth win
Baumann (9-0) pitched 1.2 perfect innings to earn the win Friday over the Mets. He did not walk or strike out a batter.
Baumann cleaned up Dean Kremer's mess with a double play to end the sixth inning before tossing a clean seventh. Since the start of July, Baumann has earned four of his nine wins while pitching to a 1.29 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 14 innings. He's at a 3.31 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 54:28 K:BB through 54.1 innings overall while working in somewhat of a fireman role in the middle innings.... See More ... See Less
Orioles' Mike Baumann: Picks up win Sunday
Baumann (8-0) allowed a hit and struck out one in a scoreless inning to earn the win Sunday over the Yankees.
Dean Kremer allowed three runs over four innings and needed 90 pitches to get that far, allowing Baumann to step up to vulture a win. This was Baumann's 10th appearance in July, and he's allowed three runs (two earned) over 11.1 innings with a 10:5 K:BB for the month. Overall, he's at a 3.48 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 53:28 K:BB through 51.2 innings while filling a versatile role in the Orioles' bullpen.... See More ... See Less
Orioles' Mike Baumann: Earns win Sunday
Baumann (7-0) walked two and struck out two without allowing a hit over 2.2 scoreless innings to earn the win over the Rays on Sunday.
Baumann has allowed just one unearned run over his last 11.2 innings, collecting three wins, a hold and a blown save in 10 appearances in that span. He's also posted a 12:9 K:BB in that stretch, but the elevated walk rate has yet to come back to haunt him. He's at a 3.49 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 52:28 K:BB through 49 innings this season, emerging as a reliable multi-inning option for manager Brandon Hyde.... See More ... See Less
Orioles' Mike Baumann: Grabs win No. 6
Baumann (6-0) allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one over 1.2 scoreless innings to earn the win Saturday over the Marlins.
Baumann induced a double play in the sixth inning to get out of a two-on, one-out situation, then worked around a two-out triple in the seventh before the Orioles took the lead. Since the start of June, Baumann has a 3.29 ERA despite a 13:13 K:BB, and he's added four holds and two wins over 13.2 innings in that span. His 3.92 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 46:26 K:BB for the season don't inspire a ton of confidence in his long-term success, but he's been effective enough in a lower-leverage role this season.... See More ... Orioles' Mike Baumann: Secures fifth win
Baumann (5-0) earned the extra-inning win Saturday over the Mariners, striking out two in a perfect inning.
Baumann kept the game tied in the top of the 10th inning, setting up Ryan McKenna's walk-off home run a half-inning later. Over 10 appearances in June, Baumann has allowed four runs in 8.1 innings while collecting a win and three holds. He's at a modest 4.23 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 42:19 K:BB through 38.1 innings this season, mainly in a middle-relief role. Working as a full-time reliever has helped him increase his velocity to 96.7 mph on average, up one tick from last season, when he split time between the rotation and bullpen.... See More ... Orioles' Mike Baumann: Collects another win
Baumann (4-0) pitched a perfect inning and earned the win Wednesday over the Yankees.
Baumann entered for what appeared to be a low-leverage assignment with the Orioles down four runs in the sixth inning. Baltimore rallied for eight runs in the top of the seventh and held on to put Baumann in line for the win, his second in as many appearances. The right-hander has kept runs off the board in six of his last eight outings, though a 10:7 K:BB over 8.1 innings during that span isn't inspiring. He has a 3.81 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 27:13 K:BB through 26 innings this season.... See More ... See Less
Orioles' Mike Baumann: Notches third win
Baumann (3-0) struck out one without allowing a hit or walk over 1.2 scoreless innings to earn the extra-innings win over the Blue Jays on Sunday.
Baumann came in with one on and one out in the 10th inning, and he proceeded to pick off Whit Merrifield. After the Orioles rallied ahead again in the 11th, Baumann stayed in and finished off the win. He's kept runs off the board in five of his nine appearances in May, but he's also been tagged for multiple runs three times this month. The 27-year-old owns a 3.96 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 27:13 K:BB through 25 innings across 21 appearances this season, and he'll likely continue to see primarily low-leverage work.... See More ... See Less
Orioles' Mike Baumann: Collects second win
Baumann (2-0) walked one and struck out two without allowing a hit over two scoreless innings to earn the win Sunday over the White Sox.
Baumann has picked up the win in his last four outings. The 27-year-old right-hander has a pedestrian 8:5 K:BB through 9.1 innings, but he's done well in run prevention as evidenced by his 0.96 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. With a low-leverage role and a lack of significant strikeout upside, Baumann isn't likely to make much of an impact in fantasy.... See More ... See Less
Orioles' Mike Baumann: Snags first win
Baumann (1-0) walked one and struck out two without allowing a run in two-thirds of an inning to earn the win Friday over the White Sox.
Baumann got the last two outs of the sixth in relief of starter Tyler Wells. Baumann walked the bases loaded, but he was able to escape the jam, and the Orioles rallied for the lead in the top of the seventh. This is Baumann's first season working as a full-time reliever after coming up through the minors as a starter. So far, he's done reasonably well with a 1.23 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 6:4 K:BB across 7.1 innings, but his low-leverage role isn't one to attract fantasy managers.... See More ... See Less
Orioles' Mike Baumann: Shifting roles
Manager Brandon Hyde said Thursday that Baumann will be used as a traditional reliever moving forward, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Baumann had been in competition for a rotation spot, but he has struggled significantly with five walks and eight earned runs allowed across eight frames this spring. He worked in relief in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays and turned in a clean inning with one strikeout. Baumann should not be expected to work in a high-leverage role to begin the season.... See More ... See Less
Orioles' Mike Baumann: Solid in spring
Baumann has allowed two earned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out eight over five innings across two Grapefruit League appearances.
Baumann is once again competing for a rotation spot this spring, and he's off to a decent start. The 27-year-old righty has started four of his 17 big-league appearances. All of those starts came last season, though his overall results -- a 4.72 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, 23:9 K:BB and 1-3 record over 34.1 innings -- weren't that impressive. With Grayson Rodriguez pushing to open the year in the majors and other pitchers like Tyler Wells and Kyle Bradish in the mix as well, Baumann will really need to stand out to land a starting role rather than a bullpen spot or a trip to Triple-A Norfolk.... Orioles' Mike Baumann: Allows 10 baserunners
Baumann allowed four earned runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out four across 5.1 innings in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays. He did not factor into the decision.
Baumann allowed three hits and a run in the second inning, but the majority of the damage against him came on a three-run homer by Gabriel Moreno in the sixth frame. The start did mark Baumann's longest outing of the season, as he pitched primarily out of the bullpen. Across 34.1 innings with Baltimore this season, Baumann maintained a 4.72 ERA with a 23:9 K:BB.... See More ... See Less
Orioles' Mike Baumann: Tuesday's game postponed
Baumann won't pitch as scheduled Tuesday against the Blue Jays since the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Sun reports.
The 27-year-old was scheduled to make his final start of the season Tuesday but will instead have the outing pushed back a day. The game will be made up via a doubleheader Wednesday, and Baumann will start Game 2 of the twin bill, per Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com.... See More ... See Less
Orioles' Mike Baumann: Works four innings
Baumann allowed two earned runs on six hits and no walks while striking out two across four innings Thursday against the Red Sox. He did not factor into the decision.
Baumann made his second consecutive turn through the rotation and was limited to 74 pitches as a result. Both of the earned runs against him came in the fourth inning, when he allowed two doubles and a single. Baumann will likely get a final start prior to the close of the regular season, and he's allowed a combined four earned runs with a 4:2 K:BB across his last two starts spanning eight innings.... Orioles' Mike Baumann: Draws another start
Baumann is scheduled to start Thursday's game in Boston.
He'll be getting his second straight turn through the rotation after working four innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits and two walks in a no-decision versus Houston last weekend. The 27-year-old righty owns a 4.32 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 17:8 K:BB in 25 innings at the big-league level this season.... See More ... See Less
