A sinker/slider righty whose shallow arsenal may limit his upside, Mason Black is knocking on the door of the majors after making 13 starts at Triple-A. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound burgeoning workhorse built up to 123.2 innings while striking out 155 and walking 52. His 94-mph sinker can touch 97 mph and his slider sits in the mid-80s. Black has dabbled with a curveball, cutter and changeup, but he is mostly a two-pitch pitcher. Generally sinker/slider types generate groundballs at high clips, but Black had a 41.7 percent groundball rate at Double-A and a 39.9 percent groundball rate at Triple-A. Fortunately, Oracle Park ranks 27th in Statcast's home run park factor, so a flyball approach isn't the worst thing. Black could be a useful streamer in favorable home starts as a rookie, but he projects as a No. 4 or No. 5 starter long term.

  • Giants' Mason Black: Reassigned to minors

The Giants reassigned Black to minor-league camp Tuesday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. The 24-year-old will presumably start for the Giants at some point during the first week of the season with Blake Snell and Keaton Winn still building up and Alex Cobb (hip) destined for the injured list, but that doesn't mean Black needs to be included on the Opening Day roster. The right-hander can be called up at any point since he isn't yet on the 40-man roster.

  • Giants' Mason Black: Hit hard versus Reds

Black allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out three without walking a batter over 3.1 innings Wednesday versus the Reds. Black has now allowed eight runs over 10.1 innings across four Cactus League outings (three starts). Things have not gone well for the Giants' rotation from a health standpoint this spring, which has seen Black gain momentum to potentially begin the year as a major-league starter despite his spring struggles. Keaton Winn (elbow) and Alex Cobb (hip) are still working their way back, leaving Black to compete with Spencer Howard and Daulton Jefferies for two spots in the rotation.

  • Giants' Mason Black: Promoted to Triple-A

The Giants promoted Black to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday. Black had a strong first half with Double-A Richmond, putting up a 3.57 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and a 83:21 K:BB through 63 innings across 16 starts. The 23-year-old righty will likely close out the season in Sacramento and has a chance to make his debut for the Giants sometime in 2024.
