Pablo Lopez had an impressive first season in Minnesota by finishing seventh in the AL Cy Young voting and going 2-0 and giving up one run in 12.2 innings in the postseason. Lopez changed his arsenal in the offseason to feature a sweeper as his primary off-speed pitch which resulted in more strikeouts. Lopez had a career-high 29.2% K% and 14.8% swinging K%. He allowed just a .215 wOBA and generated a 36.3% K% on his sweeper. He also set a new high 194 innings while maintaining career-best velocity (94.8 average mph fastball). The Twins signed him to a four-year, $73.54 million contract extension after his trade from Miami as they believe they traded for a true ace and felt validated by his playoff performance.

  • Twins' Pablo Lopez: Surrenders five during loss

Lopez (1-2) was hit with the loss in Friday's game versus the Tigers after giving up five earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven batters across four innings. Lopez got behind early after giving up a solo shot to Mark Canha in the first inning, but most of the damage done against the right-hander came in the fifth when he allowed four consecutive hitters to reach base to begin the inning. He left with the Twins down 4-0 and two runners on base before recording an out in the frame, and reliever Kody Funderburk allowed an additional run to score before closing out the inning. Lopez now holds a 4.86 ERA and 1.20 WHIP through his first three starts and will look to improve upon those numbers his next time out, which projects to come in Baltimore on Wednesday.

  • Twins' Pablo Lopez: Falls to Cleveland

Lopez (1-1) took the loss Thursday versus the Guardians, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out two. Most of the damage against Lopez came in the fourth inning when four of Cleveland's first five batters singled en route to a three-run frame. It's the first loss of the year for Lopez, who's allowed four earned runs on 10 hits while striking out nine through his first 12.2 innings. The 28-year-old right-hander went 11-8 with a 3.66 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and a career-high 234 strikeouts in 32 starts with the Twins last season. Lopez will look to get back in the win column in his next outing, tentatively lined up for next week against the Dodgers.

Lopez (1-0) tossed seven innings, allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts to earn the victory in Minnesota's 4-1 win at Kansas City on Thursday. It took Lopez just 84 pitches to complete seven frames as he walked none in a dominant effort. His lone blemish in the box score was a leadoff home run by Royals' third baseman Maikel Garcia, but otherwise Lopez was in control, throwing first-pitch strikes to 18 of the 24 batters he faced. Lopez earned his first all-star appearance last year and finished with 11 wins and a 3.66 ERA and 234 strikeouts over 194 innings.

  • Twins' Pablo Lopez: Working on pitches this spring

Lopez gave up two runs with two walks and three strikeouts over three innings in his second spring outing to raise his Grapefruit League ERA to 7.20. However, Lopez says he's been experimenting with different pitches rather than focusing on results, including throwing a rare 0-2 sinker to a lefty (Matt Olson), the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. "It didn't work out. He hit it like 600 feet to center," Lopez said. Lopez has already been named Minnesota's Opening Day starter March 28 against Kansas City, so he has no worries about his performance this spring. He's healthy and working on different pitches and looks sharp early in the spring. The right-hander's first season in Minnesota was the best of his career, with Lopez collecting a 3.66 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 234:48 K:BB over 194 innings.

  • Twins' Pablo Lopez: Named Opening Day starter

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli named Lopez the team's Opening Day starter Wednesday, Lexi Schweinert of Twins Radio reports. It's on the early side to be naming an Opening Day starter, but Baldelli evidently saw no reason to wait with Lopez representing an obvious choice. The right-hander's first season in Minnesota was the best of his career, with Lopez collecting a 3.66 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 234:48 K:BB over 194 innings. Minnesota opens its regular season on March 28 in Kansas City.

Lopez was utterly dominant in his return to the mound after pitching in Game 1 of the AL Wild Card Series against the Blue Jays. The right-hander experienced some pressure in the fourth inning when a Michael Brantley hit moved Kyle Tucker to third base, but Lopez was able to strike out Chas McCormick to escape any damage. Sunday's performance improved his standout pitching stats this postseason to a 0.71 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with two wins and ten strikeouts across 12.2 innings.

Lopez will start Game 2 of the Twins' ALDS matchup against Houston on Sunday, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. • Twins' Pablo Lopez: Claims first postseason win

Lopez earned the win in Tuesday's 3-1 victory over the Blue Jays in Game 1 of the AL Wild Card Series, allowing one run on five hits and two walks across 5.2 innings. He struck out three. Lopez had a solid outing in his second career postseason start, mainly relying upon the defense behind him to take care of a bevy of outs on contact. Things began to break down a bit for the right-hander in the sixth inning after he allowed an RBI single to Kevin Kiermaier, but he was pulled with the lead intact. He had a 3.68 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 38 strikeouts across 29.1 innings in September heading into the contest.

  • Twins' Pablo Lopez: Starting Game 1 for Twins

Lopez will start Game 1 of the AL Wild Card Series for the Twins, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. It comes as no surprise since it's the way the pitchers have been lined up, but it will be Lopez in the first game and Sonny Gray in Game 2 against a yet-to-be-determined opponent. Lopez is certainly deserving of the honor, as he finished the regular season with a 3.66 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 234:48 K:BB over 194 innings in his first year in Minnesota.

  • Twins' Pablo Lopez: Takes no-decision Wednesday

Lopez allowed three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six batters over 4.1 innings in a no-decision against Oakland on Wednesday. Lopez was handed an early two-run lead before giving up his first run in the third frame. The right-hander responded with a scoreless fourth but was lifted after giving up consecutive one-out hits in the fifth. Both of those runners came around to score after Lopez's departure, resulting his his mediocre final line. On a positive note, Lopez stuck out six batters to end up with 234 on the campaign, the most by a Twins pitcher since Johan Santana struck out 235 in 2007. Assuming this was his final regular-season appearance, Lopez complemented the punchout total with a 3.66 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over 194 frames covering 32 starts. HIs next trip to the mound should come in the AL Wild Card round, which begins next Tuesday.

Lopez (10-8) took the loss Saturday, giving up five runs on eight hits over five innings as the Twins fell 7-6 to the White Sox. He struck out eight without walking a batter. The right-hander nearly got chased early, serving up a two-run homer to Eloy Jimenez and a three-run shot to Gavin Sheets in the first inning, but Lopez survived the frame and settled down after that, although Minnesota was never able to erase the deficit. it's the second time in his last five starts he's been tagged for at least five runs including multiple home runs, but those outings account for five of the six long balls and 10 of the 14 earned runs he's allowed since the beginning of August -- a stretch in which he's posted a 2.29 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 61:10 K:BB through 55 innings. • Twins' Pablo Lopez: Struggles in no-decision

Lopez allowed five runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out four batters over five innings in a no-decision against Texas on Thursday. Lopez entered the contest in the midst of one of the most effective stretches of his career, tossing three straight scoreless appearances during which he posted a 0.95 WHIP and 22:3 K:BB over 19 innings. He saw the scoreless streak come to an end quickly Thursday when Marcus Semien tagged him for a homer leading off the game. That was one of three long balls Lopez served up in the contest, and he exited after five frames having yielded five runs and a season-high 10 hits. The mediocre outing is understandable given that Lopez was facing the league's second-highest scoring team, and he still holds an excellent 2.14 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 46:7 K:BB over 42 innings across his past seven starts.
