Player Outlook
Chase Silseth continues to tease with his fantasy potential around issues both in and out of his control. The highlights of his 2023 season include a 12-strikeout performance against the Mariners in early August and a 10-strikeout performance against the Yankees in late July while his lowlights include getting chased before the fourth inning with 4+ earned runs against both the Orioles and Rays along with being concussed by an errant throw during a rundown in a start against the Mets in late August. Between Salt Lake and Anaheim, Silteth worked 98 innings with 104 strikeouts, 46 walks, and 10 homers despite his groundball tilt. Both his slider and splitter generated whiffs a third of the time, but his fastball is average at best yet he throws it over half the time because he falls behind in the count more than he should. Better execution and command would allow Silseth to take a nice step forward in 2024 as long as his body holds up.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Not yet throwing

Silseth (elbow) has been doing strengthening and plyometric activities, but he hasn't yet resumed throwing, per MLB.com. Silseth was placed on the 15-day IL on April 8 due to right elbow inflammation. A subsequent MRI cleared the hurler of any ligament damage, and an initial timeframe of three weeks was established for his return. However, it's not clear if Silseth will be able to meet that timeline given that he isn't yet throwing. Prior to getting hurt, Silseth had allowed six earned runs while posting a 12:4 K:BB over eight innings of work.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Tagged with three homers

Silseth (0-1) allowed three runs on three hits and two walks over five innings Sunday, striking out seven and taking a loss against Boston. All three hits against Silseth came in the span of four batters during the third inning, and all three left the park. He's now given up six earned runs through eight innings in two starts despite a strong 12:4 K:BB. Silseth forced nine swinging strikes on 91 pitches Sunday after getting 13 whiffs on 76 pitches in his season debut. Silseth is currently lined up for a rematch in Boston next weekend.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Yields four runs

Silseth allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks over three innings Monday. He struck out five and did not factor into the decision during the win over Miami. Silseth was tagged for all four runs in the first inning and was able to settle in for a pair of scoreless frames. He needed 76 pitches in the short outing but managed to force 14 whiffs on 37 swings. However, his velocity was down a touch, with the fastball averaging 93.8 mph. Silseth is currently projected for a home matchup with the Red Sox this weekend.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Tosses four frames

Silseth allowed one run on two hits and three walks over four innings Friday in the Angels' win over Oakland. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. Silseth returned from the injured list Friday to make his first appearance since Aug. 26. The lone damage against him came on Brent Rooker's RBI double in the third inning. Silseth posted a 3.96 ERA with a 56:26 K:BB through 52.1 MLB innings this season. In seven appearances since the All-Star break, he registered a 3.21 ERA.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Back from injured list

The Angels reinstated Silseth from the 7-day concussion IL on Thursday. Silseth landed on the 7-day injured list Aug. 29, but lingering discomfort and uneasiness prolonged his stay. He made two rehab starts with Triple-A Salt Lake, giving up two runs over 3.2 innings while striking out five batters and walking sixth, and he is now set to make his final major-league start of the season Friday versus Oakland. Kolton Ingram was optioned to Salt Lake in a corresponding move.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Makes second rehab start

Silseth (concussion) made his second rehab start with Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday, striking out four and scattering two hits and four walks over 3.1 scoreless innings. Silseth retired just one batter while giving up two runs in his first rehab outing for Salt Lake this past Sunday, but he fared much better while returning to the bump five days later. Though he wasn't especially efficient, Silseth stretched out to 60 pitches (29 strikes) and looks as though he'll be a candidate to return from the 7-day injured list for the final week of the season. Silseth could slot into the Angels rotation as soon as next Wednesday against the Rangers, though next weekend's series versus Oakland might be a more realistic target for his return.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Inefficient in short rehab start

Silseth (concussion) recorded one out and allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks in his rehab start Sunday for Triple-A Salt Lake. Silseth spotted just 14 of his 30 pitches for strikes in what was his first outing since he landed on the Angels' 7-day injured list Aug. 29 after being diagnosed with a concussion. It's unclear whether the Angels' plan was for Silseth to make only a brief rehab start Sunday, or if he was lifted from the outing early due to some sort of physical issue. Even if Silseth came out of the rehab start with a clean bill of health and is activated from the IL to fill the opening in the big club's six-man rotation this coming weekend in Minnesota, he could be held to a limited pitch count in his return.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Making rehab start Sunday

Silseth (concussion) is making a rehab start with Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports. The right-hander continues to work his way back from the concussion he suffered on a cross-infield throw in late August, and his return to game action is a strong indication he's close to rejoining the Angels. If he requires only the one rehab start, Silseth could be back in the Halos' rotation next weekend in Minnesota.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Return date uncertain

Angels manager Phil Nevin said Monday that Silseth (concussion) won't be an option to start Wednesday's series finale in Seattle, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. "There's just little minor things that are still affecting him a little bit," Nevin said of Silseth. "He's building up his workouts. He's building up his bullpens...got to get through everything without any sort of discomfort and any uneasiness." Silseth has seemingly made progress in his recovery from the concussion since landing on the 7-day injured list Aug. 29, but the young right-hander looks like he won't be an option to pitch this week while he continues to build his arm back up following the recent shutdown. The Angels will thus need to break in a new starter into their six-man rotation Wednesday, though a replacement has yet to be named.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Won't pitch this weekend

Manager Phil Nevin said Wednesday that Silseth (concussion) won't be activated from the 7-day injured list to pitch during the Angels' four-game series with the Guardians that begins Thursday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. The Angels are still planning to maintain a six-man rotation even though Silseth won't be able to pitch this weekend. Anaheim is set to call up Davis Daniel from Triple-A Salt Lake to fill the sixth spot in the rotation Thursday, while Griffin Canning, Tyler Anderson and Kenny Rosenberg have been named as the Angels' starters from Friday through Sunday. According to MLB.com, Silseth is still dealing with some discomfort after he sustained a concussion when he was hit in the head by an errant throw in his Aug. 26 start versus the Mets.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Placed on concussion IL

The Angels placed Silseth (concussion) on the 7-day injured list Tuesday. Silseth had to be hospitalized after taking a cross-infield throw to the back of the head during his start Saturday against the Mets. He was initially cleared of a concussion, but the Angels will play it safe with the 23-year-old right-hander as he continues to be evaluated. Silseth has pitched to a 4.10 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 53:23 K:BB through 48.1 innings (seven starts, eight relief appearances) this season.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Discharged from hospital

Silseth (head) was released from the hospital Saturday and hasn't been diagnosed with a concussion, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. "I think we avoided something serious, but with head injuries you always want to be cautious," Angels manager Phil Nevin said of Silseth. Silseth was sent to the hospital for observation after exiting his start in Saturday's 5-3 win in the fourth inning, when he was hit in the head when teammate Trey Cabbage threw the baseball across the diamond. The right-hander was down on the field for several minutes before walking off under his own power, but he was still sent to the hospital, only to be discharged hours later. While Silseth appears to have avoided any concussion symptoms for the time being and is believed to be dealing with only a headache, he's still not guaranteed to make his next turn through the rotation, which would likely fall next weekend in Oakland.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Undergoing tests at hospital

Silseth is undergoing tests at a hospital after being struck in the back of the head by a throw in Saturday's game versus the Mets, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports. First baseman Trey Cabbage was trying to throw a runner out at third base in the fourth inning but hit Silseth before the ball could reach its intended destination. Weston notes that Silseth was alert and speaking before leaving for the hospital and even joked about whether he was covering the right base, which seems like a good sign. The Angels will update the pitcher's status once the results of the tests are in.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Exits after taking throw to head

Silseth was removed from Saturday's start versus the Mets in the fourth inning after a throw across the infield hit him in the back of the head, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. The Angels were trying to cut down a runner with a throw from first to third base, but Silseth was in the line of fire and was struck in the back of the head. He was down on the field for several minutes before eventually walking off with a little help. The right-hander is surely set to go through concussion testing. Silseth was charged with two runs on two hits and two walks over 3.1 innings before exiting the game.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Struggles in Saturday start

Silseth allowed five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four batters over 3.2 innings in a no-decision in the Angels' 7-6 win over the Rays in Game 1 of a doubleheader Saturday. Though Silseth fell behind by two runs in the first frame, the Angels bounced back to give him a 6-2 lead through three innings. The right-hander couldn't take advantage, however, as he was lifted with two outs in the fourth. Silseth surrendered three runs on four hits and a walk in that frame, with two of the knocks against him leaving the park. The 23-year-old nailed down a spot in the rotation on the strength of a four-start stretch between July 19 and Aug. 13, during which he posted a 1.59 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 31:5 K:BB across 22.2 innings. Saturday's poor outing probably won't lead to him leaving the rotation, though it's worth noting that Griffin Canning -- who has come out of the bullpen in each of his past two appearances after starting in each of his initial 16 contests this season -- took the win Saturday as a result of giving up just one run over 3.1 frames.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Possible waiver wire pickups

It was widely presumed coming into last week that Silseth would be forfeiting his rotation spot for newly acquired Lucas Giolito. But then Griffin Canning went on the IL with a calf injury, and two starts later, Silseth would appear to be here to stay. The clincher came Sunday when he struck out 12 over seven innings, registering 21 whiffs on 100 pitches. Eight came on his slider, which isn't so surprising given that recent tweaks to that pitch, including dialing back the velocity, are what put Silseth on this path, beginning with a 10-strikeout effort July 19. But the majority of Sunday's whiffs actually came on the splitter, a pitch that Silseth threw 1.6 mph harder and twice as often as usual. Maybe these changes won't stick, but the possibility of more outings like Sunday's makes Silseth worth a pickup everywhere, even as part of a six-man rotation.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Sticking around in rotation

Silseth is scheduled to start Sunday versus the Mariners at Angel Stadium. Silseth was expected to lose his spot in the rotation after the Angels acquired Lucas Giolito from the White Sox last week, but the right-hander will end up making two starts this week after Griffin Canning (calf) was unexpectedly scratched Monday before moving to the 15-day injured list a day later. The Angels are hopeful that Canning will be able to return from the IL when first eligible Aug. 13, so Silseth's upcoming start could be his last before he heads back to the bullpen or to Triple-A Salt Lake. Silseth has held his own against the Yankees and Atlanta his last two times out, picking up wins on both occasions while striking out 14 and issuing only two walks over 10.2 innings.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Called up for start

The Angels recalled Silseth from Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday. Silseth will make just his second major-league start of the year Wednesday against the Yankees after taking five underwhelming rotation turns at Triple-A. The 23-year-old right-hander holds a career 6.08 ERA in the big leagues and is not a recommended fantasy streamer.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Starting for Halos on Wednesday

Silseth will be recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday to start against the Yankees, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports. Silseth was optioned to Triple-A on June 3 and has since put up a 4.50 ERA and 1.14 WHIP through 22 innings across five starts. Despite the relatively unremarkable numbers, he'll be called upon to start Wednesday, joining the rotation as a replacement for Jaime Barria, who has been working out of the bullpen since the All-Star break. Silseth has only two major-league appearances this season that lasted at least three innings.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Drops first start

Silseth (0-1) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk over 3.1 innings against the Orioles. He struck out five. Silseth, making his first start this season after beginning the year in the bullpen, was tagged for three runs in the fourth inning en route to the loss. Overall, the 22-year-old right-hander has a 5.40 ERA with a 1.46 WHIP and 10:6 K:BB through 11.2 innings. Silseth could still get another look in the rotation while Jose Suarez (shoulder) is sidelined. His next start would likely come next week against Boston.
