Player Outlook
Keaton Winn made his big-league debut last year at age 25 and mostly performed well, tallying 35 strikeouts against only eight walks in five starts and four relief appearances covering 42.1 innings. But when opposing hitters made contact, it was generally hard contact, and his 4.68 ERA tells the story more accurately than his 1.04 WHIP. He had a 4.08 ERA in 108 innings between Low-A, High-A and Double-A in 2022 and a 4.81 ERA in 58 innings with Triple-A Sacramento in 2023. His command might have miraculously improved and maybe Keaton will be the rare pitcher who performs better in the majors than he ever did in the minors, but the Giants aren't guaranteeing him a rotation spot out of the gate in 2024 and the right-hander can mostly be ignored on draft day in standard fantasy formats.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Picks up second straight win

Winn (2-3) earned the win against the Mets on Monday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk while striking out six batters over six innings. The only run Winn allowed came on a Pete Alonso solo homer in the fifth inning, which was also the Mets' lone extra-base hit in the contest. The right-handed hurler finished with his second straight quality start, and he's allowed just two runs over 12 frames during that two-game stretch. Winn appears to be finding a groove and has been a valuable component of San Francisco's pitching staff so far this season, posting a 3.54 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB through 28 innings.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Notches first win

Winn (1-3) earned the win Wednesday at Miami after he allowed a run on four hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out four. The right-hander kept the Marlins off the board until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Bryan De La Cruz launched a solo homer to tie the game 1-1. Winn then closed out the frame, and the Giants took the lead in the top of the seventh to put him in line for his first win of the campaign. The 26-year-old surrendered seven runs across his first two starts of the season but has bounced back in his last two outings with 2.70 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 10:4 K:BB over 11 innings.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Remains winless

Winn (0-3) took the loss Friday, giving up two runs on five hits and three walks over five innings as the Giants fell 2-1 to the Rays. He struck out six. It was a tough loss for the right-hander, who threw 58 of 89 pitches for strikes in a solid outing but didn't get much run support. Winn has yet to produce a quality start in his three trips to the mound, but his 5.06 ERA might be a little unlucky considering his 1.19 WHIP, 13:7 K:BB and only one homer allowed through 16 innings. He'll look to pick up his first win of 2024 in his next start, which lines up to come on the road next week in Miami.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Drops to 0-2 with loss Saturday

Winn (0-2) took the loss against San Diego on Saturday, allowing four runs on three hits and three walks while striking out one batter over six innings. Winn got off to a rough beginning in the contest, giving up four first-inning runs on a Jurickson Profar grand slam. The second-year hurler rebounded to hold the Padres scoreless and hitless over the following five frames, but San Francisco was unable to put any runs on the scoreboard, resulting in the right-hander taking his second loss. It was at least promising to see Winn keep his composure after the difficult first inning, but it's also worth noting that he didn't miss many bats, as he induced just four swinging strikes and one punchout. The lack of strikeouts and mostly mediocre minor-league numbers limit's Winn's current fantasy appeal.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Gets through five frames in loss

Winn (0-1) threw five innings in a loss to the Dodgers on Monday, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out six batters. Winn threw 60 of his 89 pitches for strikes and induced 14 swings and misses, so he wasn't entirely overwhelmed by the Dodgers' vaunted offense. However, the right-hander gave up a pair of extra-base hits that were turned into two of the three runs against him. It's a somewhat positive sign that Winn was able to hang around against one of the league's top offenses, but the right-hander will likely need to show much more to move onto the radar in fantasy redraft formats.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Goes 1.2 frames in spring debut

Winn (elbow) yielded one run over 1.2 innings Sunday in his Cactus League debut versus the Rockies. Winn permitted two hits and a walk and also plunked a batter but did record three strikeouts. The right-hander got in additional work in the bullpen after the appearance in order to get more stretched out, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. While an elbow issue delayed Winn's spring debut, he remains on track to begin the year in the Giants' rotation, perhaps making his first start against the Dodgers in the second series of the season.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Making spring debut Wednesday

Winn (elbow) is scheduled to pitch in a minor-league spring training game Wednesday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Winn's Cactus League debut might not come until next week at the soonest, but the right-hander's ability to pitch in a minor-league game suggests that he's completed his throwing progression after he was shut down early in camp due to a sore elbow. Because of the time he's missed thus far in camp, Winn could be facing an uphill battle to get fully stretched out for a starter's workload prior to the Giants' March 28 season opener, but the team isn't yet discounting the possibility of him being included on the Opening Day roster. With Alex Cobb (hip) and Sean Hjelle (elbow) seemingly trending toward joining Tristan Beck (arm) and Robbie Ray (elbow) on the injured list to begin the season, Winn has a clear path to a back-end rotation spot if the Giants are comfortable with where he stands in his buildup program by the end of the spring.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Progresses to live BP

Winn (elbow) has progressed to throwing live batting practice, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. Winn had to cut a bullpen session short two weeks ago due to right elbow soreness, but he's come along nicely since then. The next step for the righty should be appearing in a Cactus League game, although it's uncertain when exactly that will come. The hope is that Winn can ramp up in time for Opening Day, and if he can, he's expected to be part of the Giants' rotation.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Poised for bullpen session

Winn (elbow) will throw a bullpen session this weekend, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. He'll be getting back on the bump for the first time since he had to cut a bullpen session short a little over a week ago due to right elbow soreness. It's not clear when Winn might be cleared to pitch in Cactus League games, but the Giants are hopeful he'll have time to get ready for Opening Day. He's expected to open the season in San Francisco's rotation, if healthy.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Set to start throwing program

Winn (elbow) will begin a throwing program Monday after meeting with a doctor Saturday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Winn had his bullpen session Wednesday cut short after feeling soreness in his right elbow, but the right-hander appears optimistic that he will be ready for Opening Day. Winn pitched in nine games last season -- including five starts -- and posted a 1-3 record and one save with a 4.68 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 35:8 K:BB across 42.1 innings.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Not concerned about elbow

Winn said Wednesday that he's not overly concerned about his sore right elbow and is still expecting to be ready for Opening Day, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Winn was sent in for an MRI after experiencing soreness following his most recent bullpen session of spring training, but those tests apparently didn't reveal any structural or ligament damage. The right-hander will still be shut down from throwing for the time being, putting him behind the Giants' other healthy rotation options as Cactus League play gets underway this weekend. If Winn avoids an extended shutdown period and is able to build up to a starter's workload by the end of March, he should still have the inside track on a rotation spot.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Shut down with sore elbow

Winn underwent an MRI after feeling right elbow soreness following his last bullpen session, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. The good news is the MRI came back negative, so the Giants are hopeful that he'll be OK following a few days of rest. Still, any elbow-related injury should garner some cause for concern. Assuming health, Winn is tentatively lined up to open the season as San Francisco's fourth starter. He posted a 4.68 ERA and 35:8 K:BB across 42.1 innings in 2023.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Good shot at rotation spot

Giants manager Bob Melvin indicated Tuesday that Winn is in a favorable spot to capture one of the open spots in the rotation, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Melvin noted that he has four pitchers in mind in competition for the fourth and fifth rotation spots, but Winn and Tristan Beck are the clear early front-runners. Winn, 26, posted a 4.68 ERA and 35:8 K:BB across 42.1 frames covering five starts and four relief appearances with San Francisco in 2023. The Giants will eventually get Alex Cobb (hip) and Robbie Ray (elbow) back, but Winn and Beck could both have time to establish themselves before then.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Yields six runs in loss

Winn (1-3) took the loss Friday versus the Dodgers, allowing six runs on six hits and striking out five without walking a batter over 5.1 innings. Winn was tagged for three home runs to account for all of the offense against him in his return from a nine-day stint on the COVID-19 injured list. Winn closes the season with a 4.68 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 35:8 K:BB over 42.1 innings across nine appearances (five starts) in his first big-league campaign. The 25-year-old righty will likely have a chance to compete for a rotation spot in spring training next year.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Returning for start Friday

Winn (illness) is scheduled to return from the COVID-19-related injured list to start Friday's series opener against the Dodgers, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Winn has been on the COVID-19-related IL since Sept. 19, but he's cleared health and safety protocols and will fit in one more start with the Giants before their 2023 season comes to a close. The 25-year-old right-hander carries a strong 3.89 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 30:8 K:BB through his first 37 major-league innings this season, though his highest single-game pitch count is 80.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Works four innings Saturday

Winn allowed three runs on three hits and two walks, striking out five batters over four innings while notching a no-decision in Game 1 of a doubleheader against Colorado on Saturday. All three runs Winn allowed scored on a third-inning, bases-clearing triple by Ezequiel Tovar. Though Winn has bounced between pitching as a traditional starter and a bulk reliever, his workload has been fairly consistent, as he's completed between four and six innings in seven of his eight appearances. The rookie right-hander has held his own in the majors thus far, posting a 3.89 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 30:8 K:BB over 37 frames.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Strikes out nine in win

Winn (1-2) allowed three runs on five hits and struck out nine without walking a batter over six innings to earn the win Sunday over the Rockies. Winn's last outing was last Sunday, when he pitched five scoreless innings out of the bullpen. He got the start this time around and turned in a quality start, his second in seven appearances this season. The rookie right-hander has been effective so far with a 3.55 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 25:6 K:BB through 33 innings. It's unclear what his role will be going forward, though the Giants certainly have a need for solid starting efforts. If he remains in the rotation, his next outing would be a rematch with the Rockies in Colorado.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Expected to be featured Sunday

Winn is likely to pitch Sunday against the Rockies, whether it's as a traditional starter or bulk reliever, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. Giants manager Gabe Kapler has yet to make an official call on a starter yet, but Winn will be featured in some form. The rookie right-hander tossed five scoreless relief frames in his last appearance and holds a 3.33 ERA and 16:6 K:BB over 27 frames overall this season.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Back in action at Triple-A

Winn (elbow) was reinstated from Triple-A Sacramento's 7-day injured list Saturday and gave up five earned runs on five hits and no walks while striking out three in 2.2 innings in his return to action against Tacoma. Winn was sidelined for just a month due to right elbow soreness. The right-hander made five appearances (two starts) with the Giants earlier in 2023 but will likely need to enjoy a sustained run of success at Sacramento before garnering another look with the big club.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Goes on IL at Triple-A

Triple-A Sacramento placed Winn (elbow) on its 7-day injured list Saturday. Winn was deactivated after he experienced soreness in his right elbow coming out of his most recent outing with Sacramento on July 22. Fortunately for Winn, his follow-up tests revealed no structural damage to his elbow, but it's unclear if he'll be able to pitch again in 2023 while he recovers from the injury. Before he was optioned to Sacramento on July 6, Winn went 2-1 with a 4.09 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 22 innings in five appearances (two starts) with the Giants.
