Delay recently underwent surgery to repair the meniscus in his right knee, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. Delay is expected to be ready to resume baseball activities in six weeks and it figures to be several weeks after that before he might be ready to return to the Pirates. Pittsburgh is currently using Henry Davis and Joey Bart as its catching duo, but Yasmani Grandal (foot) recently began a rehab assignment.... See More ... See Less

Pirates' Jason Delay: Shut down from all activities
Delay (knee) remains shut down from all baseball activities, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. Delay has been out for the last week with right knee inflammation and appears to have made little-to-no progress. He's eligible for activation in mid-April, but clearly the catcher will not be ready at that time.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jason Delay: Limited progress in recovery
Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said Sunday that nothing "particularly new" has changed with regard to where Delay stands in his recovery from right knee inflammation, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Delay was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday and doesn't seem to have made any notable progress in his recovery since. He looks set to spend more than the minimum 10 days on his shelf, and whenever he's ultimately activated, Delay could be optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis to play on a more frequent basis.... Pirates' Jason Delay: Hits IL with inflamed knee
The Pirates placed Delay on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with right knee inflammation, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Delay's placement on the IL is retroactive to Monday, so he'll be eligible for activation as soon as April 11. However, because he still has three minor-league options remaining, Delay seems more likely to be headed for Triple-A Indianapolis once activated after the Pirates acquired fellow catcher Joey Bart from the Giants on Tuesday. Bart was added to the 26-man roster Wednesday in a corresponding move, and since he's a former top prospect with no options remaining, he'll likely move ahead of Delay on the organizational catching depth chart. In addition to Bart, the Pirates have 2021 No. 1 overall pick Henry Davis and veteran Yasmani Grandal (foot) -- who is on the IL while he recovers from plantar fasciitis -- ahead of Delay in the pecking order behind the dish.... Pirates' Jason Delay: Headed for IL
The Pirates are expected to place Delay on the injured list Wednesday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. It's unclear what injury Delay might be dealing with, but more clarification will come once the Pirates make the move official. In a corresponding move, the Pirates acquired Joey Bart in a trade with the Giants on Tuesday. Bart could end up replacing Delay on a permanent basis as the backup to Henry Davis.... See More ... Pirates' Jason Delay: Recalled from Indianapolis
The Pirates recalled Delay from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday. After Pittsburgh traded Austin Hedges to the Rangers on Tuesday, Delay will come up from Triple-A to fill in as the Pirates' backup catcher. Delay is slashing .260/.328/.375 across 118 plate appearances in Pittsburgh this season.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jason Delay: Sent to Triple-A
Delay was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday. The Pirates are handing the starting catcher job over to Endy Rodriguez, with Austin Hedges moving to the backup role. That means Delay will head back to Indianapolis rather than stick around as a third catcher.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jason Delay: Stuck in reserve role
Delay is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Dodgers. Delay had a brief run as the Pirates' No. 1 catcher earlier this month while Austin Hedges was on the 7-day concussion injured list, but Delay has faded back into a reserve role since Hedges was activated about a week and a half ago. Hedges has now picked up seven of the last nine starts at catcher for Pittsburgh.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jason Delay: Getting rest Wednesday
Delay is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros. Delay will be getting a breather after going 0-for-2 with a walk while catching all nine innings of Tuesday's 7-4 win. Tyler Heineman replaces Delay behind the dish for the series finale.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jason Delay: Contributes from bottom of order
Delay went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored Friday against the White Sox. Delay drew his third start of the season and hit ninth, though that didn't stop him from having a productive performance. He tallied his first multi-hit effort of the campaign, which was highlighted by an RBI knock in the fifth frame. So long as Austin Hedges (concussion) is sidelined, Delay figures to split time behind the dish with Tyler Heineman. Through 13 at-bats, Delay has delivered five hits with a home run, a double, two RBI and four runs scored.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jason Delay: Contract selected by PIT
Delay had his contract selected by the Pirates on Thursday. Delay will open the 2023 season as the Pirates' backup catcher. He won the gig this spring over both Tyler Heineman and Kevin Plawecki.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jason Delay: To open as backup catcher
Delay will open the 2023 season as the Pirates' backup catcher, Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review reports. The 28-year-old beat out both Tyler Heineman and Kevin Plawecki for the backup gig behind starter Austin Hedges. Delay slashed just .213/.265/.271 over his first 57 major-league games last season in Pittsburgh, and his minor-league stats aren't much better.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jason Delay: Removed from 40-man roster
Delay cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports. Delay played in 57 games for Pittsburgh last season but won't retain his spot on the 40-man roster. It was the 27-year-old's first taste of the big leagues, and he had a .213/.265/.271 slash line with one home run, 11 RBI and 17 runs.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jason Delay: Sitting out Tuesday
Delay isn't in the lineup Tuesday against the Cardinals. After recording hits in his last two games, Delay will sit out Tuesday in favor of Tyler Heineman, who will bat eighth. Delay and Heineman have traded off starts behind the plate most of the season, so it seems likely that Delay will get the start for Pittsburgh's final game Wednesday.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jason Delay: On bench Wednesday
Delay isn't starting Wednesday against the Reds. Delay is out of the lineup for the second time in the last three games after he went 1-for-4 during Tuesday's matchup. Jose Godoy will start behind the dish and bat eighth.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jason Delay: Idle Monday
Delay is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Reds. Delay will get a breather for the series opener after he went hitless in six at-bats while he was behind the plate for both of the Bucs' final two games with the Cubs over the weekend. Jose Godoy will replace Delay as the Pirates' starting catcher Monday.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jason Delay: Drives in pair
Delay went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, two RBI and a run scored Tuesday against the Yankees. Delay delivered a two-RBI double in the sixth inning to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead. Two frames later, he came around to score after reaching base on a free pass. Delay has served as the Pirates' primary catcher since Aug. 4, though he's hit just .188 with three RBI and 10 runs scored across 85 at-bats since.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jason Delay: Not in Saturday's lineup
Delay isn't starting Saturday against the Mets. Delay has split playing time at catcher recently and will head to the bench for a second consecutive matchup. Tyler Heineman will start behind the plate and bat ninth.... See More ... See Less -
