Adell gave the Angels their first lead in the second inning with a three-run blast to left-center field. The outfielder has made the most of his two long balls this spring -- his other homer was a grand slam against the Dodgers. Adell could be the Angels' Opening Day center fielder since Mike Trout is moving to right field this season.

Adell got the best of Dustin May in the second inning, swatting a grand slam to left-center field to give the Angels an early lead. That was the outfielder's only knock of the game, however, and in fact it's his only hit so far this spring through 12 at-bats. Adell and Mickey Moniak are vying for time in center field for the upcoming season now that Mike Trout is moving to right field.

• Angels' Jo Adell: Slated to play in spring opener

  Adell (oblique) is expected to play in the Angels' Cactus League opener Saturday versus the Mariners, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Adell finished the 2024 season on the injured list after suffering a left oblique strain in early September, but he made a full recovery from the injury over the offseason and isn't operating with any restrictions this spring. The 25-year-old struck out in 28 percent of his 450 plate appearances with the Angels in 2024 and batted just .207, but he displayed the power-speed combination (20 home runs, 15 steals) that had made him an enticing fantasy prospect during his time in the minors. Batting average will continue to remain an issue moving forward unless he reduces his strikeout rate, but the toolsy 26-year-old should have the inside track for an everyday role in the outfield heading into Opening Day. After playing primarily in right field last season, Adell is expected to see most of his reps in center field in 2025 while the Angels look to move the oft-injured Mike Trout to a corner spot in an effort to preserve his health.

Adell was a Gold Glove finalist in right field in 2024 but will be tasked with a new position in 2025, at least while Trout is healthy. The 25-year-old Adell has started only 15 games in center field at the major-league level but played there extensively in the minors. Mickey Moniak will also be in the mix for starts in center field and has more experience at the position than Adell.

It's a nice raise for Adell, who was in his first year of arbitration eligibility. The former top prospect slashed .207/.280/.402in 2024 in his first year as a full-timer at the big-league level, popping 20 home runs and stealing 15 bases along the way.

The 25-year-old also got caught stealing for the 10th time this season, but Adell is creeping closer to a 20-20 campaign -- he's got 18 homers as well in 122 games. He's also been a more consistent contributor in August, slashing .277/.333/.446 through 90 plate appearances with a 24.4 percent strikeout rate, which is a slight improvement on his 28.1 percent rate for the year. The Angels have been extremely patient with the athletic outfielder, and that patience could be paying off.
