San Diego claimed Marcano (knee) off waivers from the Pirates on Thursday. Marcano is expected to miss at least a portion of the 2024 season after undergoing surgery this past August to repair a torn ACL in his right knee. The infielder owns a career .217/.269/.320 batting line in 149 major-league games, but he showed a bit of improvement at the plate in 2023 and just turned 24 years old in September. Marcano began his professional career in the Padres' system before heading to Pittsburgh in July of 2021 as part of the Adam Frazier trade.... See More ... See Less

Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: Undergoes surgery for torn ACL
Marcano underwent surgery Wednesday to repair the torn ACL in his right knee, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports. Marcano tore his ACL on a play at third base July 24 against the Padres and will likely be sidelined through the early part of the 2024 season. The 23-year-old posted a .233/.276/.356 batting line with three homers and five steals over 75 games (220 plate appearances) this season for Pittsburgh.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: ACL surgery confirmed
Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk confirmed Wednesday that Marcano will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. An official timeline for Marcano's return likely won't be established until the procedure is performed, but ACL surgeries often entail a recovery process of anywhere between six and 12 months. With that in mind, Marcano may face an uphill battle to gain full clearance for the start of spring training, unless he makes remarkable progress in his recovery over the offseason. Marcano will conclude the 2023 campaign with a .233/.276/.356 slash line to go with three home runs and five stolen bases over 220 plate appearances for Pittsburgh.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: Likely requires surgery
Marcano said Sunday that he will likely require surgery to address ligament damage in his right knee, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Marcano injured his knee Monday in San Diego and was placed on the 60-day injured list a day later, officially ruling him out until late September. The Pirates' decision to quickly move Marcano to the 60-day IL already implied that a return before the end of the 2023 season was unlikely, and knee surgery would make that outcome official. If Marcano's season is in fact over, he'll finish with a .233/.276/.356 slash line to go with three home runs and five stolen bases across 220 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: Placed on 60-day IL
Pittsburgh placed Marcano on the 60-day injured list Tuesday with a right knee ligament injury, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports. Marcano had to be carried off the field Monday after injuring his knee on a play at third base. He won't be eligible to return from the 60-day IL until late September and could very well be done for the season. The young infielder had slashed .233/.276/.356 with three homers and five steals through 75 major-league games this year for the Pirates.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: Nursing ligament injury
Marcano left Monday's game against the Padres with a ligament injury in his right knee, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports. He went 1-for-3 with a strikeout prior to his departure. Marcano wasn't able to put any weight on his right leg after a play at third base Monday. The Pirates are sending him for further evaluation Tuesday, but Marcano appears likely to require a trip to the injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: Leaves with knee injury
Marcano was removed from Monday's game against the Padres after suffering a right knee injury, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports. Marcano stepped awkwardly on third base during a play in the bottom of the fifth inning and needed assistance getting off the field. He should be considered day-to-day since the severity of the injury is currently unclear.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: Back in lineup Wednesday
Marcano will start at shortstop and bat seventh Wednesday against the Guardians. Marcano had started at shortstop in nine of the Pirates' first 12 games of July, but he was the bench for the first two contests of the series in the wake of prospect Liover Peguero's promotion from Triple-A Indianapolis. Though Peguero looks like he'll get a trial as the Bucs' primary shortstop for the time being, he'll take a seat Wednesday in favor of Marcano after going 0-for-6 with five strikeouts in his first two starts. If neither Peguero nor Marcano is able to provide consistent production at the plate over the next several games, one or both could be headed back to Triple-A once Ji Hwan Bae (ankle) eventually makes his return from the 10-day injured list.... Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: Nabs third straight start
Marcano will start at shortstop and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Brewers. Marcano will get his third straight start at shortstop after going 2-for-8 with a triple, two runs and two RBI in the first two games of the series with Milwaukee. With the Pirates moving Ji Hwan Bae (ankle) to the 10-day injured list Sunday, Marcano looks as though he could have a fairly clear path to playing time in the middle infield, at least versus right-handed pitching.... Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: Loses hold of steady playing time
Marcano is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Padres. The lefty-hitting Marcano is on the bench for the third game in a row, with two of his absences from the lineup having come when the Pirates faced right-handed pitchers. Marcano has slashed a woeful .197/.231/.262 through 22 games in June and appears to have lost hold of a regular role in the middle infield to recent call-up Nick Gonzales.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: Out versus lefty
Marcano isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Padres, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. With left-hander Blake Snell set to start on the mound for San Diego, the left-handed bat of Marcano will remain in the dugout for the beginning of Wednesday's game. Nick Gonzales will instead start at shortstop, allowing Rodolfo Castro to start at the keystone and bat fifth.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: Out of lineup Tuesday
Marcano isn't starting Tuesday against the Padres, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Marcano is 3-for-11 with an RBI across his last five games and will get a breather Tuesday. Nick Gonzales will instead get the start at shortstop, allowing Ji Hwan Bae to start at second and bat seventh.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: Sitting again versus lefty
Marcano isn't starting Friday against the Marlins, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Friday marks the third straight game Marcano will begin in the dugout, although two have been against lefty starters. Rodolfo Castro will start at shortstop and bat sixth.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: Sitting Thursday
Marcano isn't in the Pirates' lineup Thursday against the Marlins. Marcano is just 2-for-16 with an RBI over his last five games, so he will sit out Thursday to regroup. Rodolfo Castro will take Marcano's place at shortstop and bat fifth.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: On bench Wednesday
Marcano is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs. Marcano will receive a respite after he started at shortstop in each of the last three games while going 2-for-11 with a double and a walk. Rodolfo Castro will replace Marcano at shortstop in the series finale.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: On bench versus southpaw
Marcano will sit Wednesday against Oakland, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Marcano will head to the bench as the Pirates face southpaw Hogan Harris on the mound. Rodolfo Castro will slide over to shortstop while Mark Mathias enters the lineup at second base and bats seventh in the series finale with the Athletics.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: Sitting versus lefty
Marcano is out of the lineup Monday against the Athletics, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. The Pirates will go with the switch-hitting Rodolfo Castro at shortstop versus left-hander JP Sears. The left-handed hitting Marcano is just 3-for-19 this season against southpaws.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: Thriving with regular playing time
Marcano went 1-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored Friday against the Cardinals. Marcano started his 12th consecutive game against right-handed pitching, all of which have come at shortstop. He's also jumped to the leadoff spot in three of his last four appearances after primarily hitting sixth in the order to start the season. Marcano has maintained a .275/.310/.575 line across his last 40 at-bats while also tallying seven RBI, five runs scored and three stolen bases.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: Idle Wednesday
Marcano is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Giants, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Chris Owings will pick up the start at shortstop in the series finale, but Marcano still appears fairly secure as the Pirates' top option at the position. Unless he makes a pinch-hitting appearance off the bench Wednesday, Marcano will finish May with a solid .271/.317/.525 slash line to go with three home runs and two stolen bases over 22 games.... Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: Getting look in leadoff spot
Marcano went 3-for-4 with two doubles Monday against the Giants. Marcano hit atop the Pirates order for the second consecutive game against a right-handed pitcher and has now gone 4-for-8 in that small sample. It's unclear if he'll continue to have a chance in the role as the team has cycled through a number of different options in recent weeks. Marcano has taken over the strong-side platoon role at shortstop and seized the opportunity by generating three multi-hit games in his last five starts.... See More ... See Less
