Olivares is 2-for-18 with four strikeouts in Grapefruit League action. The Pirates acquired Olivares this winter, and he should have a role in right field with the team in 2024. Exactly how much he'll play is unclear, as the Pirates also have Josh Palacios (leg) and Connor Joe as potential fits at the position. Olivares's spring performance isn't ideal given the competition for playing time, though his adequate 22.2 percent strikeout rate suggests a few more hits could start falling in soon.... See More ... Pirates' Edward Olivares: Settles at $1.35 million
Olivares signed a $1.35 million contract with the Pirates on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. After slashing .263/.317/.452 with 36 RBI across 385 plate appearances last season with Kansas City, Olivares was traded to Pittsburgh in December. The 27-year-old outfielder boasts an .800 OPS against southpaws since 2021 and figures to be a regular part of Pittsburgh's lineup in 2024.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Edward Olivares: Traded to Pirates
The Royals traded Olivares to the Pirates on Friday in exchange for Deivis Nadal, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. With the signing of Chris Stratton becoming official Friday, the Royals unloaded Olivares to make room on their 40-man roster. The 27-year-old will likely be used both in the outfield and as a designated hitter next season, and he provides a significant boost to Pittsburgh's lineup against lefties after slashing .277/.339/.518 versus southpaws last season.... Royals' Edward Olivares: Swats 12th homer
Olivares went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Yankees. From the start of September, Olivares went 23-for-70 (.329) with six homers, 16 RBI and two stolen bases over 22 games. It was a strong finish to the campaign for the outfielder, who has hit for a decent average at times with little pop. For the season, he slashed .263/.317/.452 with 12 long balls, 11 stolen bases, 36 RBI, 47 runs scored, 23 doubles and four triples across 385 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Edward Olivares: Not starting Saturday
Olivares isn't in the Royals' lineup Saturday against the Yankees. Olivares will step out of the lineup after slugging a two-run home run during Friday's win. Salvador Perez will shift to the DH spot in Olivares' absence while Logan Porter starts behind the dish.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Edward Olivares: Lifts 11th homer
Olivares went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Friday's 12-5 win over the Yankees. Olivares went 13 games without a homer before Friday's blast, though he hit .318 (14-for-44) with four doubles and two stolen bases in that span. The 27-year-old's long ball came in the first inning as part of a nine-run blitz to begin the contest. He's up to 11 homers, 35 RBI, 46 runs scored, 11 steals and a .264/.318/.447 slash line through 105 games this season.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Edward Olivares: Not in Tuesday's lineup
Olivares is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Tigers. Olivares started four of Kansas City's past five games and will take a seat Tuesday after going 4-for-14 with a double, two walks, two steals, two RBI and two runs during that stretch. Nelson Velazquez will serve as the designated hitter while Kyle Isbel receives a start in the outfield.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Edward Olivares: Out of lineup Saturday
Olivares isn't in the Royals' lineup Saturday against the Astros. Despite putting together a four-game hitting streak, Olivares will take a seat to begin Saturday's contest. Nelson Velazquez will serve as Kansas City's designated hitter while Drew Waters starts in right field with Kyle Isbel in center.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Edward Olivares: Picks up steal in win
Olivares went 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 7-5 win over the Astros. Olivares has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games, going 12-for-34 (.353) in that span. The outfielder is seeing steady playing time between designated hitter and left field, albeit not in an everyday role. He has a .266/.323/.447 slash line with 10 home runs, 11 thefts, 32 RBI, 45 runs scored, 21 doubles and four triples through 100 games this season.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Edward Olivares: Registers 10th steal
Olivares went 1-for-4 with one RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Guardians. Olivares has returned with a vengeance since he was recalled from Triple-A Omaha at the beginning of September. He's gone 17-for-45 (.378) with four home runs and 11 RBI over 14 contests, and he picked up his first steal of the month Wednesday. The outfielder is up to a .264/.318/.444 slash line with 10 homers, 10 thefts, 31 RBI and 44 runs scored over 99 contests this season, though he's also added 21 doubles and four triples across 358 plate appearances.... Royals' Edward Olivares: Takes seat Monday
Olivares is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Guardians. Olivares will hit the bench for the series opener after he had started in seven of the past eight games while going 8-for-25 with a home run, two doubles, three walks, four RBI and three runs. He'll cede his spot in the lineup to Nelson Velazquez, who will bat out of the cleanup spot as the Royals' designated hitter.... See More ... See Less -

Royals' Edward Olivares: Power surge continues
Olivares went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's 5-1 loss to the Blue Jays. He spoiled Kevin Gausman's shutout bid by taking the right-hander deep in the fifth inning. Olivares has a career-high 10 homers in 91 games on the season, but four of them have come in his last five contests, a stretch in which he's gone 6-for-14 (.429) with seven RBI.... See More ... Royals' Edward Olivares: Sent to Triple-A
The Royals optioned Olivares to Triple-A Omaha on Sunday. Olivares has been slumping at the plate recently, putting up just a .638 OPS in 34 plate appearances since the start of August. As a result, he'll head to the minors in order to get back on track, making room for Drew Waters to return from the bereavement list.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Edward Olivares: Sitting against righty again
Olivares is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox. Olivares will sit out for the third time in four games, with all of those absences from the lineup coming versus right-handed pitching. Though Olivares has seen more starts at designated hitter than any other Royals player since the All-Star break, manager Matt Quatraro seems content to rotate a number of players at that lineup spot rather than making Olivares a fixture at the position.... Royals' Edward Olivares: Notches steal Tuesday
Olivares went 2-for-5 with a stolen base in Tuesday's 9-3 win over the Red Sox. Olivares' playing time has been a bit shaky lately. He's gone eight games without an RBI and 24 contests without a home run, hitting just .229 with six RBI and six doubles in that longer span. The outfielder is slashing .250/.302/.408 with six homers, nine steals, 19 RBI and 36 runs scored through 81 contests overall. The Royals seem content to have Olivares be the primary designated hitter, but there's been little hesitation to rotate other players in that spot when they need to rest their legs.... See More ... Royals' Edward Olivares: Sitting out again Monday
Olivares is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Red Sox. Olivares has now sat out three of the Royals' last four matchups with right-handed pitchers, perhaps signaling that his standing as an everyday player is on shaky ground. Dairon Blanco appears to be Olivares' top challenger for the final spot in the Kansas City lineup; Blanco will start in left field and bat eighth Monday after going 3-for-8 with five RBI, three stolen bases and three runs over his previous three games.... Royals' Edward Olivares: Out of Sunday's lineup

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG15H agoFrustrating sixth for the Pirates. They get Luzardo out. Two on, nobody out, Cutch swings 3-1 on a breaking ball. Winds up striking out. Davis beats out a dribbler, then Cruz & Triolo look at called third strikes. Had a chance that inning & squandered it.
