Murphy was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. The Red Sox are swapping out Brandon Walter in favor of Murphy heading into Friday's weekend series in Toronto. The southpaw will provide the bullpen with some length after working at least three innings in three of his last four appearances at Triple-A.... See More ... See Less

Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Sent back to Triple-A
Murphy was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Monday. Murphy covered four innings out of the bullpen in Sunday's loss to the Dodgers, and with that kind of workload presumably making him unavailable for at least a couple days, the Red Sox decided to remove him from the roster and replace him with fellow reliever Kyle Barraclough, who was called up from Triple-A. Now that he's back with Worcester, Murphy should slide back into the rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Makes return to Boston bullpen
The Red Sox recalled Murphy from Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. He'll provide Boston with another left-handed option capable of covering multiple innings out of the bullpen for at least the next week after fellow lefty reliever Brennan Bernardino was placed on the COVID-19-related injured list Sunday. Murphy was optioned to Triple-A following Monday's loss to the Astros but hadn't made any appearances for Worcester since the demotion.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Headed to Triple-A
The Red Sox optioned Murphy to Triple-A Worcester following Monday's 9-4 loss to the Astros, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. Murphy allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out four over four innings of long relief Monday. He's now given up 11 runs over his last four appearances (10.1 innings) and will head to the minors. The Red Sox will reinstate Tanner Houck (face) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his start Tuesday to fill Murphy's spot on the 26-man active roster.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Fills bulk-relief role Sunday
Murphy allowed an unearned run on four hits and struck out one without walking a batter over 3.1 innings Sunday versus the Giants. He did not factor in the decision. Murphy was ultimately the bulk reliever in the Red Sox's bullpen game, rather than Nick Pivetta. The 25-year-old Murphy didn't enter the game until the fourth inning, but he still delivered solid pitching, though he was never in line for the win. The southpaw is now at a 1.59 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 27:11 K:BB over 28.1 innings through nine relief appearances in the majors this season. Boston's rotation remains something of an enigma to project, but Murphy should be next be available for a bulk-relief outing over the upcoming weekend series at home versus the Blue Jays.... Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Earns first win
Murphy (1-0) allowed one run on three hits and two walks over 3.2 innings Sunday, striking out three and picking up a win against the Mets. Murphy took on a bulk reliever role following Brennan Bernardino's 1.2 shutout frames to open the game. Murphy didn't allow a run until the sixth inning. The 25-year-old southpaw snagged his first career win while lowering his ERA to 1.80 through 25 career MLB innings.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Does well in bulk-relief role
Murphy allowed two hits and a walk while striking out six over 4.2 scoreless innings, taking a no-decision versus the Athletics on Tuesday. Opener Joe Jacques gave up all three runs on home runs in the second inning before Murphy entered for a bulk-relief assignment. While the deficit didn't get any worse, the Red Sox were unable to generate any support for Murphy. The southpaw has held his own as a multi-inning reliever this season, posting a 1.69 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB over 21.1 innings through seven appearances. With three off days between now and the end of July, the Red Sox will likely be able to get by with their three starters and Nick Pivetta working in a bulk role for a while, so Murphy may be limited to mop-up duty.... Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Deployed in bulk relief Tuesday
Murphy tossed 3.2 innings out of the bullpen in Tuesday's 6-2 loss to the Rangers, giving up one run on five hits and one walk while striking out one. Lefty Brennan Bernardino drew the start and covered 1.1 innings before the Red Sox turned the game over to five relievers to record the final 23 outs. Murphy ended up serving as the de facto bulk reliever, as none of Boston's other four bullpen arms notched more than four outs. Due to the depleted state of their rotation, the Red Sox don't have any obvious starting candidates for games Saturday or Sunday versus the Athletics, so there's a good chance that Murphy is called upon to cover multiple innings in one of those contests.... Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Throws two innings in loss
Murphy allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out one over two innings in Wednesday's 6-2 loss to the Marlins. Murphy pitched the eighth and ninth innings of what was a bullpen game for the Red Sox. The former starter has showed promise as a bulk reliever since transitioning to the bullpen in the minors at the beginning of the month. The Red Sox are rolling with three healthy starters and expect James Paxton (knee) to start Friday. Beyond that, the fifth spot in the rotation may be what was on display Wednesday, a combination of long relievers that features Murphy and Nick Pivetta. Both Tanner Houck (face) and Chris Sale (shoulder) are on the injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Back in majors
The Red Sox recalled Murphy from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. The Red Sox sent Murphy down to Worcester immediately after he served as the 27th man in Sunday's doubleheader versus the Yankees, and now he'll return for his third MLB stint this season. Despite his 7.01 ERA in Triple-A, Murphy has been stellar in the majors -- he's thrown six scoreless frames while allowing just three hits and striking out eight batters. Brandon Walter was sent back to Triple-A in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Optioned to Triple-A
Murphy was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Monday. Murphy served as the 27th man during Sunday's doubleheader versus the Yankees but is now headed back to the minors. The left-hander has spun six scoreless frames with eight strikeouts in the majors this season, so he has surely earned another opportunity at some point down the line.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Appointed as 27th man
Murphy was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Sunday to serve as the 27th man for the doubleheader against the Yankees, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Murphy will give the Red Sox an extra arm in the bullpen for the twin bill against New York after Saturday's contest was postponed. In his MLB debut against Cleveland on June 8, the southpaw threw 3.1 scoreless innings while striking out five, but he's registered an unhealthy 7.01 ERA and 1.88 WHIP as a member of Worcester over his 43.2 frames.... Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Makes MLB debut
Murphy allowed two hits and one walk while striking out five over 3.1 scoreless relief innings during Wednesday's 5-2 loss to Cleveland. Murphy, who was a starter in the minors, was called up this week and made his MLB debut. Spot starts could become available if he remains up with the team, but it looks like long relief may be his role for now. It's role that had been handled by Kutter Crawford, who started Wednesday in place of Chris Sale (shoulder).... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Chris Murphy: Recalled from Triple-A
Murphy was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Murphy is getting the call even as he's put up a 7.71 ERA and 42:25 K:BB over 39.2 innings of work with Worcester this season. He'll be available in relief immediately but is under consideration for a start later this week. Murphy will be making his major-league debut when he gets into a game.... See More ... See Less
