  • Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Heading back to Triple-A

The Pirates optioned Nicolas to Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday. He'll cede his spot in the bullpen to right-hander Carmen Mlodzinski, who was called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move and will provide the Pirates with a multi-inning option in relief. Nicolas made three appearances after his June 3 promotion, giving up one earned run on three hits and one walk over 4.1 innings.

  • Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Promoted Tuesday

The Pirates recalled Nicolas from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday. The right-hander will join the Pirates on Tuesday for his second stint in the majors this season. Nicolas surrendered nine earned runs over 7.2 innings during his prior run with Pittsburgh this year and has a 5.63 ERA in 14 appearances with Indianapolis.

  • Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Sent to Triple-A

The Pirates optioned Nicolas to Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday. He's the odd man out of the bullpen with Dennis Santana (personal) getting reinstated from the bereavement list. Since being called up from Indianapolis on April 11, Nicolas had submitted a 10.57 ERA, 2.35 WHIP and 6:8 K:BB over 7.2 innings while working in lower-leverage situations.

  • Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Recalled from Triple-A

The Pirates recalled Nicolas from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday. Nicolas has struggled this season with Indianapolis, yielding nine earned runs in just 6.1 innings. However, he has a big arm and could eventually work his way into high-leverage situations as part of an unsettled Pirates bullpen.

  • Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Joining Pittsburgh

The Pirates will recall Nicolas from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. The 26-year-old righty will come up from the minors to give the Pirates' bullpen another fresh arm to work with, replacing Thomas Harrington. Nicolas has been hit around quite a bit in Triple-A this year, allowing nine earned runs in just 6.1 innings, so he'll likely only see action in low-leverage situations while in Pittsburgh.

  • Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Lands on IL

The Pirates placed Nicolas (side) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. With only 11 days left in the season and Pittsburgh out of the running for a wild-card spot, Nicolas' move to the IL will put an early end to his 2024 campaign. The 25-year-old righty will finish the year with a 3.95 ERA and 1.50 WHIP alongside a 55:31 K:BB across 54.2 innings. Jake Woodford was selected to the active roster in a corresponding move and will start Wednesday's game versus St. Louis.

  • Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Recalled by Pittsburgh

The Pirates recalled Nicolas from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. Nicolas ended the 2023 season as part of the Pirates' bullpen. He struggled in his four outings, giving up seven runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out seven over 5.1 frames. Nicolas has looked better in Triple-A this season, posting a 0.84 ERA and 2.06 WHIP over 10.2 innings, and he'll get another shot in the majors. The move corresponds with Ryder Ryan being optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday.

  • Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Selected to MLB roster

Pittsburgh selected Nicolas' contract from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday. The 24-year-old will get his first taste of major-league action down the stretch after posting a 5.20 ERA and 127:52 K:BB in 98.2 innings this summer between Double-A and Triple-A. He showed much better following a move to the Indianapolis bullpen in early August, delivering a 2.05 ERA with 31 strikeouts across his last 22 frames. Thomas Hatch was optioned out in a corresponding 28-man roster move.

  • Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Rejoins Double-A rotation

Nicolas (shoulder) was activated from Double-A Altoona's 7-day injured list Saturday and struck out two over 2.2 innings while giving up two runs on three hits and a walk in his return to the mound. Nicolas was cleared to make his return to Altoona's active roster as a long reliever after a three-week stint on the shelf with a shoulder injury. The 23-year-old right-hander should slot back into the rotation next week and will take a 4.15 ERA and 1.28 WHIP into his 12th outing of the season with Altoona.

  • Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Strong debut for Altoona

Nicolas allowed two hits and three walks while striking out five over 3.2 innings in his debut for Double-A Altoona. According to Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com, the Pirates were raving about Nicolas this spring and scouts in other organizations think the Pirates did really well to land him from Miami in the Jacob Stallings trade. Nicolas has logged 43 innings at Double-A dating back to last season, so he could earn a midseason bump to Triple-A Indianapolis.
