The Pirates recalled Nicolas from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. Nicolas ended the 2023 season as part of the Pirates' bullpen. He struggled in his four outings, giving up seven runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out seven over 5.1 frames. Nicolas has looked better in Triple-A this season, posting a 0.84 ERA and 2.06 WHIP over 10.2 innings, and he'll get another shot in the majors. The move corresponds with Ryder Ryan being optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday.... See More ... See Less

Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Optioned to minor-league camp
The Pirates optioned Nicolas to Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday. Nicolas finished last season in the big-league bullpen but is now on the outside looking in for the Opening Day roster. The 25-year-old had a 6.20 ERA over 45 innings at Indianapolis last season, and he'll likely need better results in 2024 to make it back to the majors.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Selected to MLB roster
Pittsburgh selected Nicolas' contract from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday. The 24-year-old will get his first taste of major-league action down the stretch after posting a 5.20 ERA and 127:52 K:BB in 98.2 innings this summer between Double-A and Triple-A. He showed much better following a move to the Indianapolis bullpen in early August, delivering a 2.05 ERA with 31 strikeouts across his last 22 frames. Thomas Hatch was optioned out in a corresponding 28-man roster move.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Rejoins Double-A rotation
Nicolas (shoulder) was activated from Double-A Altoona's 7-day injured list Saturday and struck out two over 2.2 innings while giving up two runs on three hits and a walk in his return to the mound. Nicolas was cleared to make his return to Altoona's active roster as a long reliever after a three-week stint on the shelf with a shoulder injury. The 23-year-old right-hander should slot back into the rotation next week and will take a 4.15 ERA and 1.28 WHIP into his 12th outing of the season with Altoona.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Kyle Nicolas: Strong debut for Altoona
Nicolas allowed two hits and three walks while striking out five over 3.2 innings in his debut for Double-A Altoona. According to Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com, the Pirates were raving about Nicolas this spring and scouts in other organizations think the Pirates did really well to land him from Miami in the Jacob Stallings trade. Nicolas has logged 43 innings at Double-A dating back to last season, so he could earn a midseason bump to Triple-A Indianapolis.... See More ... See Less

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf3H agoMy *other* Pirates story yesterday was Oneil Cruz, who is slashing .327/.365/.510 over his previous 15 games. I took a look at a couple mechanical tweaks he made that's helping him. https://t.co/C1psgQHKMw

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf1D agoThat's game. Angels 5, Pirates 4. Pérez was shakier than we've seen him this year, the non-Oneil Cruz/Connor Joe part of the Pirates' lineup didn't produce much. Pirates drop the series. They are 17-21.
-
Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf1D agoAngels get three in the top of the sixth, take a 5-4 lead. Two of those runs are charged to Martín Pérez, who went 5+ today. Pirates are 14-1 this season when they score at least four runs. They'll need to pile on at least a couple more if they want to improve that figure.

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf1D agoOneil Cruz clears the bases with an absolute laser beam to right-center. His second hit of the game puts the Pirates out in front in the fifth, 3-2.

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf1D agoMartín Pérez has been the bringer of Powerade rain for the Pirates this year. I asked him about those postgame showers and ended up having a conversation about how he's trying to pay forward what the game has given him. https://t.co/7NNYMPDiPa
