  • White Sox's Jake Woodford: Signs minors deal with White Sox

Woodford signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on Wednesday and received an invitation to major-league spring training, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Woodford turned in solid campaigns in 2021 and 2022, but his ERA shot up to 6.23 through 47.2 innings last season, and he was non-tendered by St. Louis as a result. If Woodford is able to return to form during spring training, the White Sox's weak bullpen presents an opportunity for the 27-year-old righty to see plenty of innings this year.

  • Jake Woodford: Hits free agency

Woodford was non-tendered by the Cardinals on Friday. Woodford, 27, will head into free agency after registering a rough 6.23 ERA and 29:22 K:BB over 47.2 innings (eight starts, seven relief appearances) this past season with St. Louis.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Optioned to FCL

The Cardinals optioned Woodford to the Florida Complex League on Saturday. After giving up seven runs in 1.2 frames during his last start Friday, Woodford will be cast off the active roster in favor of James Naile, who will give the Cardinals additional bullpen depth for their final two games. Woodford will finish 2023 with a 6.23 ERA and 1.74 WHIP through 47.2 innings -- both sharp increases from his 2.23 ERA and 1.12 WHIP last season.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Crushed in short outing

Woodford (2-3) took the loss Friday after yielding seven runs on six hits and a walk over 1.2 innings in a 19-2 loss to the Reds. He failed to strike out a batter. Woodford gave up three home runs before being chased from the game. He returned from the injured list earlier this month and allowed just one run over 6.1 frames in two appearances before Friday's misstep. Woodford finishes the 2023 season with an unsightly 6.23 ERA and 29:22 K:BB through 47.2 innings.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Draws another start

Woodford is scheduled to start Friday's game against the Reds at Busch Stadium. Woodford will make a second straight turn through the rotation in what will likely mark his final appearance of 2023. In his return from Triple-A Memphis last weekend in San Diego, Woodford struck out one over 3.2 innings and gave up one earned run on four hits and two walks. He threw 78 pitches in that outing, so Woodford should be fully stretched out Friday.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Turns in short start Saturday

Woodford allowed a run on four hits and two walks while striking out one over 3.2 innings in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Padres in 11 innings. He didn't factor into the decision. Woodford worked up to 78 pitches (46 strikes) and limited the damage to a Manny Machado RBI single in the first inning. This was Woodford's seventh start in 14 appearances, but his first major-league start since April, as shoulder injuries and stints in the bullpen and minors have kept him out of a starting role. He's now at a 5.09 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 29:21 K:BB through 46 innings this season. It's uncertain if Woodford will start again in 2023 -- he was filling in for Adam Wainwright, who could make his final career start at home versus the Reds next weekend.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Slated to start Saturday

The Cardinals list Woodford as their probable starting pitcher for Saturday's game against the Padres in San Diego. Before he was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Monday, Woodford had been getting stretched out as a starter in the minors, covering no fewer than three innings in any of his last four outings. However, the Cardinals deployed him out of the bullpen against Milwaukee on Tuesday, when he struck out three over 2.2 scoreless innings. Though he'll be starting Saturday, Woodford will be taking the hill on three days' rest, so he probably can't be expected to cover the five innings he would need to hit to qualify for a win. Woodford will be taking the rotation spot of Adam Wainwright, who isn't scheduled to start this weekend but could work out of the bullpen if the Cardinals need someone to eat innings once Woodford exits the contest.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Summoned from Triple-A

The Cardinals recalled Woodford from Triple-A Memphis on Monday. He'll be joining the St. Louis bullpen as a replacement for right-hander Giovanny Gallegos, who was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder rotator cuff tendinitis. Woodford will make his return to St. Louis' active roster for the first time since late June, as he was on the shelf for just over two months before being activated and optioned to Triple-A on Sept. 1. Since beginning his rehab assignment Aug. 10, Woodford has been getting stretched out during his time in the minors, making seven appearances over the past five weeks while pitching to a 2.18 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 28:9 K:BB over 20.2 innings.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Activated, optioned to Memphis

The Cardinals reinstated Woodford (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Friday and optioned him to Triple-A Memphis, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. A right shoulder strain forced Woodford onto the IL in late June, and he'll now remain in the minors upon completing his rehab assignment. The 26-year-old righty accumulated a 5.67 ERA and 1.69 WHIP through 39.2 frames with St. Louis, but he could potentially return to the majors as a depth piece if he keeps performing well in Triple-A (2.08 ERA, 1.15 WHIP).

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Strikes out six in rehab outing

Woodford (shoulder) struck out six and worked around two hits and one walk in 3.1 scoreless innings in his latest rehab appearance Tuesday with Triple-A Memphis. Woodford had started in each of his previous four rehab outings, but he worked in relief behind Matthew Liberatore (back) on Tuesday. The right-hander still tossed 66 pitches (40 strikes) in the extended relief appearance, as the Cardinals appear to be entertaining the possibility of bringing Woodford back as a member of the rotation once he's reinstated from the 15-day injured list. Before landing on the IL in late June, Woodford had been working out of the bullpen, but the Cardinals could view him as an upgrade over some of their current back-end rotation options.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Terrific in latest rehab start

Woodford (shoulder) yielded just one hit while striking out six over five scoreless frames in a rehab start with Double-A Springfield on Wednesday. The right-hander needed just 56 pitches to cruise through his five innings in what could be his final rehab appearance before rejoining the Cardinals. With the rotation needs St. Louis has right now, Woodford would seem to be a good bet to be used as a starter down the stretch. He's been out since late June with a right shoulder strain.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: On rehab assignment

Woodford (shoulder) made his third rehab start Thursday with Triple-A Memphis, striking out three over 1.2 scoreless innings. He gave up one hit and walked one. Woodford made two appearances for Double-A Springfield before advancing to Memphis as he works his way back from a right shoulder strain. He could get some starts down the stretch for a Cardinals club whose rotation depth has been depleted by trades and injury, but he'll need to build up further before getting a look as a starter in the big leagues.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Advances to mound work

Woodford (shoulder) is slated to throw a bullpen session Saturday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Woodford resumed throwing on flat ground earlier this month and is now ready to advance to mound work. The 26-year-old swingman has been limited to six starts and six relief appearances this season with the Cardinals due to multiple shoulder injuries, but he could be an important factor down the stretch if St. Louis moves multiple pitchers ahead of the Aug. 1 trade deadline.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Begins throwing program

Woodford (shoulder) has begun a throwing program, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Woodford landed on the injured list in late June with a right shoulder strain, which is the second stint he's had on the IL this season with a shoulder issue. There's no timetable for the swingman's return.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Placed on injured list

The Cardinals placed Woodford on the 15-day injured list Friday with a right shoulder strain. Woodford was lit up for four runs across 2.1 innings during Thursday's game against Houston, and he's now on the IL with a shoulder strain for the second time this season. He holds a 5.67 ERA and 1.69 WHIP on the season and will be eligible to return shortly after the All-Star break. James Naile was recalled from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Posts second win

Woodford (2-2) allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one over 2.1 scoreless innings to earn the win Sunday over the Cubs. Starter Matthew Liberatore received an early pull Sunday, and Woodford provided solid relief innings. Over four appearances since rejoining the Cardinals' active roster, Woodford has allowed three runs, six hits and four walks while striking out six over 7.1 innings. He has a 5.06 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 24:15 K:BB through 37.1 innings over 11 appearances (six starts) this season, but he's primarily worked as a reliever recently. Woodford or Steven Matz would be the top candidates to join the rotation if Jack Flaherty (hip) ends up on the injured list.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Brought up from Triple-A

Woodford was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Monday. Woodford was activated and optioned last Friday after recovering from a shoulder issue, but he's back in the majors now to replace Ryan Helsley (forearm). He figures to be used as a long reliever.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Activated and optioned

Woodford (shoulder) was activated from the 15-day injured list Friday and optioned to Triple-A Memphis. Woodford is recovered from the bout of shoulder inflammation that sent him to the injured list in early May, but the Cardinals will keep him in the rotation at Memphis for now. The 26-year-old right-hander posted a 3.38 ERA with six strikeouts in three rehab starts covering eight innings.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Another rehab start Saturday

Woodford (shoulder) is slated for a second rehab start Saturday with Triple-A Memphis, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Woodford gave up two earned runs on three hits and one walk over two innings Tuesday in his rehab debut with Memphis. He threw only 37 pitches in that outing and will technically be pitching on short rest (for a starter) in this next one, so it's becoming fairly clear that the Cardinals intend to bring him back as a long reliever. The 26-year-old has been on the injured list since May 5 due to right shoulder inflammation.

  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Beginning rehab assignment

Woodford (shoulder) is beginning a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Memphis, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Woodford will work as a starter on the farm, though he's probably better suited for long relief duties considering the current state of the Cardinals' pitching depth chart. The 26-year-old right-hander posted a 5.40 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 18:11 K:BB through 30 innings (six starts, one relief appearances) this season prior to landing on the injured list May 5 due to shoulder inflammation.
