Mariners' Casey Lawrence: Strong final exhibition appearance
Lawrence started Tuesday's exhibition finale against the Padres and allowed two earned runs on three hits, a walk and a wild pitch over five innings. He struck out two.
The right-hander put together a solid showing against a Padres lineup that featured almost all regulars. Lawrence received a spring training invite alongside the minor-league contract he inked back in early February, and he's in his second tour of duty in the Mariners organization after also spending part of 2017 and all of 2018 with Seattle. Lawrence's quality spring notwithstanding (2-1, 3.86 ERA across 16.1 innings), he could be headed to Triple-A Tacoma to open 2024 as organizational depth considering his lack of both past major-league success and a 40-man roster spot.

Mariners' Casey Lawrence: Invited to Mariners' camp
Lawrence signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Lawrence got into 15 games with the Cardinals in 2023, holding a 6.59 ERA and 20:10 K:BB over 27.1 innings. The 36-year-old figures to operate as swingman depth at Triple-A Tacoma.

Lawrence (1-0) allowed two walks and struck out one over two scoreless and hitless innings to earn the extra-innings win over the Padres on Saturday.
Lawrence got the ball in the 10th inning and stayed in for the 11th after the Cardinals pulled ahead. This was just his fourth scoreless appearance in 11 outings since he joined the Cardinals in mid-August, though he has been better in shorter assignments. Treuden notes that Lawrence exercised an opt-out clause in his contract and is in talks with the Cardinals and Yankees on a new contract. Lawrence, 35, has spent all of this season at Triple-A Buffalo, posting a 4.67 ERA in 18 starts.

Lawrence was signed to a minor-league contract in January with an invite to major-league camp. The right-hander gave up four runs in eight innings over four Grapefruit League appearances, and he'll be a bullpen depth option in 2023. The Blue Jays recalled Lawrence from Triple-A Buffalo and appointed him as their 29th man for Wednesday's doubleheader with the Orioles.
Reliever Trevor Richards is scheduled to serve as the Blue Jays' opening pitcher for Game 1, but Lawrence is expected to enter the contest behind him and will likely serve as a bulk reliever for Toronto. Lawrence has made each of his five appearances with Toronto this season out of the bullpen, but he had been a member of the Buffalo rotation prior to his call-up. He closed the Triple-A season by covering at least five innings in six of his final seven outings while generating a 3.90 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 24:2 K:BB across 32.1 frames.

Lawrence worked as the primary pitcher Thursday against Seattle, allowing five runs on seven hits over 2.2 innings. He did not factor in the decision.
Anthony Banda opened the game for Toronto and was charged with two runs while notching just one out. That got him tagged with the loss and allowed Lawrence to escape with a no-decision despite his own ugly performance. Lawrence gave up a run in the second and four in the third before departing having tossed 52 pitches. The right-hander was again strung by the long ball -- he yielded two Thursday and has now served up five homers over his past 12.1 frames. Lawrence has bounced back and forth between Triple-A and the majors this season, and he could be headed back down following Thursday's poor outing.

Blue Jays' Casey Lawrence: Lines up as primary pitcher
Lawrence is expected to serve as Toronto's primary pitcher behind opener Anthony Banda against Seattle on Thursday, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports.
Kevin Gausman (ankle) is unable to start Thursday, so the Blue Jays will instead turn to Banda and Lawrence to cover the early innings in the series opener versus the Mariners.
