Andrew Suarez: Elects free agency
Suarez elected free agency Thursday after clearing outright waivers.
Suarez is off the 40-man roster in St. Louis and will head to the open market. The 31-year-old southpaw gave up 27 runs -- 22 earned -- over 27.2 innings of relief with the Cardinals in 2023.... See More ... See Less
Cardinals' Andrew Suarez: Mediocre returns in 2023
Suarez pitched to a 7.16 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 17:15 K:BB over 27.2 innings this season.
Suarez stayed in the Cardinals' bullpen after the trade deadline left the pitching staff depleted. He maintained scoreless outings just three times in 13 appearances as a long reliever in his first major-league action since he appeared in six games with the Giants in 2020. Suarez hasn't recorded a save or hold since 2019, and at 31 years old, his major-league future is cloudy.... See More ... See Less
Cardinals' Andrew Suarez: Recalled from minors
The Cardinals recalled Suarez from Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday.
After the Cardinals unloaded a handful of arms from their bullpen ahead of the trade deadline, Suarez will draw a promotion to make up for lost depth. The 30-year-old southpaw has made two appearances in the majors this season, giving up six earned runs across four innings while striking out two batters.... See More ... See Less
Cardinals' Andrew Suarez: Optioned to Memphis
The Cardinals optioned Suarez to Triple-A Memphis on Friday.
Suarez allowed three runs over two innings in each of his two appearances for St. Louis, and will now head back to the minors in order to right the ship. Though his 4.08 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in Triple-A aren't too impressive, Suarez could return to the Cards' bullpen later this season if the major-league club needs a fresh arm.... See More ... See Less
Cardinals' Andrew Suarez: Contract selected by St. Louis
Suarez had his contract selected from Triple-A Memphis by the Cardinals on Monday.
Suarez will get his first shot in the big leagues since 2020 after being called up Monday. The left-hander has produced a 4.08 ERA and 1.48 WHIP with 69 strikeouts over 64 innings in 28 appearances, including three starts, with Memphis this season. In a corresponding move to make room on the 40-man roster, Ryan Helsley (forearm) was moved to the 60-day injured list.... See More ... See Less
Cardinals' Andrew Suarez: Won't make Opening Day roster
Suarez will not be a part of the Opening Day roster for the Cardinals, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Suarez lost out to Andre Pallante and Packy Naughton for the final spots in the St. Louis bullpen. The left-hander will likely head to Triple-A Memphis to begin the 2023 season, and he could help the Cardinals at some point over the summer, assuming he stays in the organization.... See More ... Cardinals' Andrew Suarez: Chance to make Opening Day roster
Cardinals manager Oli Marmol told reporters after Tuesday's game that Suarez has a chance to make the Opening Day roster after a strong showing in spring training, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
Suarez threw 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball during Tuesday's Grapefruit League appearance, and he hasn't given up a run in his eight innings of work in Florida. Marmol notes that Suarez's velocity has ticked up in relief, and that he's getting hitters to make "defensive swings" on his fastball and breaking ball. The Cardinals will need to add Suarez to the 40-man roster in order to include him on the Opening Day roster, but it sounds like his work in the exhibition games has given St. Louis something to think about.... Cardinals' Andrew Suarez: Lands NRI from St. Louis
Suarez signed a minor-league contract with the Cardinals on Friday.
The left-hander has been given an invitation to major-league spring training as part of the deal. Suarez played in Korea in 2021 and Japan in 2022. He saw action in part of three seasons in the majors with the Giants before that, holding a 4.66 ERA over 56 appearances (31 starts). The 30-year-old is likely pegged for Triple-A Memphis to begin 2023.... See More ... See Less
Andrew Suarez: Officially heading abroad
Suarez's move to the LG Twins of the KBO was made official after his contract was sold Monday, Melissa Lockard of The Athletic reports.
The move had been initially reported back in mid-December but took some time to complete. Suarez fits the profile common to many players who head abroad, as he's received a few chances at the big-league level but hasn't carved out a regular role. His 4.66 ERA in 202.2 major-league innings will rank as one of the better resumes among former MLB pitchers in Korea, and he's still just 28 years old, so it's not out of the question that he could take a step forward in a consistent starting role and push for more opportunities stateside in the future.... Giants' Andrew Suarez: Move to KBO in process
Suarez is nearing a one-year deal with the LG Twins of the Korea Baseball Organization, Daniel Kim of MBC Sports+ reports.
The Twins would need to work out a buyout with the Giants since the left-hander remains under contract, but it appears he intends to continue his career in Korea. Suarez covered only 9.2 innings during 2020 and had a 5.79 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 25:14 K:BB over 32.2 frames in 2019.... See More ... See Less
Giants' Andrew Suarez: Sent down by Giants
Suarez was optioned to the Giants' alternate training site Saturday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Suarez tossed 2.2 scoreless innings Friday after rejoining the major-league club, but he'll head back to alternate camp to bring in a fresh arm in the bullpen as the Giants compete for a postseason spot. The southpaw carries a 3.72 ERA and 1.55 WHIP over 9.2 innings this season.... See More ... See Less
Giants' Andrew Suarez: Returns to roster
Suarez was recalled by the Giants on Friday.
Suarez has bounced on and off the roster throughout the season. He's made five appearances for the team, posting a 5.14 ERA, a 2.00 WHIP and a 4:5 K:BB. Wandy Peralta was optioned in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less
Giants' Andrew Suarez: Sent down Sunday
Suarez was optioned to the Giants' alternate training site Sunday, Amy Gutierrez of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
While the southpaw turned in 1.1 scoreless innings his last time out, it was not enough to save his roster spot. Suarez has mostly struggled going back to 2019, but he will likely return later this season when bullpen reinforcements are inevitably needed.... See More ... See Less
Giants' Andrew Suarez: Called up by Giants
Suarez was recalled by the Giants on Wednesday, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Suarez continues his shuffle between the active roster and the alternate training site, even though he hasn't appeared in any games so far in 2020. Outfielder Steven Duggar was sent down in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less
Giants' Andrew Suarez: Returns to alternate site
Suarez was optioned to the Giants' alternate training site Sunday and was added to the taxi squad.
The 27-year-old has had two stints on the active roster over the past week, but he has yet to see major-league action this season. Suarez and Trevor Cahill are potential candidates to fill the rotation spot of Jeff Samardzija (shoulder), who was placed on the injured list Saturday.... See More ... See Less
Giants' Andrew Suarez: Back in big leagues
Suarez was recalled by the Giants on Saturday.
Suarez will replace Jeff Samardzija, who landed on the injured list with a shoulder impingement. It's not yet clear whether he'll be filling Samardzija's rotation spot, however. Just two of his 21 appearances last season were starts, and it wouldn't make a ton of sense for the Giants to call him up Saturday with no intention of using him until Wednesday, when Samardzija was next due to pitch.... Giants' Andrew Suarez: Optioned to alternate site
Suarez was optioned to the Giants' alternate training site Thursday.
He was up for a couple days but did not pitch in a game and will now be transferred to the taxi squad for the final seven games of this road trip. Suarez should provide bullpen depth over the rest of the season.... See More ... See Less
Giants' Andrew Suarez: Recalled by Giants
Suarez was recalled from the Giants' alternate training site Monday.
Although Suarez narrowly missed out on a spot with the major-league pitching staff for Opening Day, he'll join the Giants after Andrew Triggs was optioned to alternate camp in a corresponding move. Suarez made 21 appearances (two starts) for San Francisco last season, posting a 5.79 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over 32.2 innings. The southpaw should pitch mainly in low-leverage situations since he's struggled to limit run production in the past.... See More ... See Less
Giants' Andrew Suarez: Misses out on roster
The Giants optioned Suarez to their alternate training site Wednesday.
The expanded 30-man Opening Day roster didn't provide enough space for Suarez to win a spot as a depth starter or long reliever, but his presence on the 40-man roster could give him a leg up over others in the 60-man player pool if the big club requires another pitcher at some point. Suarez appeared in 21 games (two starts) for the Giants in 2019, logging a 5.79 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 32.2 innings.... See More ... See Less
Giants' Andrew Suarez: Role still undetermined
Suarez said he's willing to fill any role asked of him, Dalton Johnson of NBCSports.com reports. "It doesn't matter," Suarez said when asked if he prefers to start or be a reliever. "Whatever I can do to help the team out, that's all I'm gonna worry about."
Suarez is battling Trevor Cahill for one of San Francisco's final rotation spots, though it sounds like he would be content with a move to the bullpen if he ultimately comes up short. The southpaw primarily worked out of the bullpen during his time with the big club in 2019, posting a 5.79 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 25:14 K:BB across 32.2 innings (two starts, 19 relief appearances). Before spring training was put on pause, Suarez compiled a 5.79 ERA and 10:3 K:BB across 9.1 Cactus League innings.... See More ... See Less
