  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: Not ready for Houston series

Castillo (hamstring) is making good progress and has thrown off a mound, but he's not expected to return from the 15-day injured list for the Mariners' three-game series in Houston that begins Monday, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports. Seattle has confirmed Bryce Miller as its starter for Monday's series opener in Houston, and Logan Gilbert and George Kirby are considered "most likely" to go Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. That means Castillo likely won't return from the IL when first eligible, but he's still very much in the mix to make a final regular-season start against Oakland later in the week. Castillo currently sits with a 3.64 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 175.1 innings this season.

  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: On track with progress

Castillo appears to be making good progress in his recovery from a hamstring strain, and the Mariners remain cautiously optimistic that he'll be activated from the 15-day injured list when first eligible Monday, MLB.com reports. "Progressing as he should be," manager Dan Wilson said. "I don't think there's any expected date, right now, of his return, but progressing as he has. I know Luis is very diligent about getting his work in and trying to get healthy, and I think as far as we know right now, he's doing well." The veteran right-hander has been sidelined since Sept. 8, when he suffered the strain while ducking out of the way of a throw on a stolen-base attempt. Castillo's ability to make at least one more start down the stretch could be critical for the Mariners, who remain in contention for an American League wild-card spot entering the season's final week. Castillo has once again proven a consistent workhorse of Seattle's rotation this season, going 11-12 with a 3.64 ERA and 1.17 WHIP across 175.1 innings over 30 starts.

  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: Out with hamstring strain

Castillo was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday due to a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. The right-hander already received a platelet-rich-plasma injection and hopes to be available after spending the 15-day minimum on the shelf. Even in a best-case scenario, Castillo will only be able to rejoin the Mariners for one or maybe two starts before the end of the regular season. Seattle is currently three games back of the final AL wild-card spot and is tied with two other teams, and the playoff positioning could affect how quickly the organization elects to bring Castillo back.

  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: Set for MRI on Monday

Castillo (hamstring) will undergo an MRI on his left hamstring on Monday in Seattle, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. Castillo left Sunday's start against the Cardinals as a result of a left hamstring strain. He will now receive additional imaging on the leg to determine the severity of the injury. Manager Dan Wilson did not speculate if he believed that Castillo will be able to make his next scheduled start or not, but more information on Castillo's status will come Monday.

  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: Departs with hamstring strain

Castillo was removed from Sunday's game against the Cardinals due to a left hamstring strain, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports. The right-hander had a good chance to pick up a win Sunday as Seattle scored seven runs across the first two frames, but Castillo was lifted due to the hamstring injury after giving up two runs across three innings. The severity of the issue isn't known, and it's unclear if the 31-year-old will be able to make his next turn through the rotation next weekend versus the Rangers.

  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: Little run support Tuesday

Castillo did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's loss to the Athletics, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out five over seven innings. Castillo only allowed four hits but two of them went for home runs, one by Lawrence Butler in the first inning and another by Seth Brown in the fourth. Castillo has now allowed nine home runs over his last five starts, though Tuesday was his first time reaching seven innings since July 19 and his first quality start since Aug. 11. The 31-year-old righty is putting together another strong campaign, yet the Mariners are 14-15 in his starts, partially due to the fact that they've scored two runs or fewer in 11 of Castillo's outings. For the year, he owns a 3.60 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 172:46 K:BB in 172.1 innings and lines up to face the Cardinals in St. Louis over the weekend.

  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: Gives up three more homers

Castillo allowed five runs on six hits and struck out nine without walking a batter over six innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Friday. Castillo was in line for the loss until the Mariners rallied to tie the game in the eighth inning. He gave up a season-high three homers Friday, and the five runs against also matched his season high. He had allowed multiple homers just four times over his first 25 starts this year, but has now done so in back-to-back outings. Castillo is at a 3.66 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 163:43 K:BB through 159.2 innings over 27 outings this year. He's projected for a home start versus the Rays next week.

Castillo allowed four runs, including two homers, while generating 11 swinging strikes on 103 pitches. He broke a streak of seven consecutive quality starts and surrendered multiple home runs for the first time since June 20. On the season, the 31-year-old owns a 3.51 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 154:43 K:BB across 153.2 innings and lines up for a home matchup with the Giants next week.

  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: Another dominant effort in win

Castillo (10-11) got the win over the Mets on Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out nine over six innings. Castillo was engaged in a pitcher's duel with Luis Severino heading into the fifth inning before the Mariners were able to provide him with some cushion on the scoreboard. The lone run against him came on a sixth-inning solo home run by Jeff McNeil. Castillo racked up nine strikeouts for a second straight start and went on a run in the game during which he struck out five consecutive batters. He's now recorded seven straight quality starts while allowing one or fewer runs four times. Castillo owns a 3.40 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 148:40 K:BB in 148.1 innings and will look to keep rolling in a matchup with the Pirates over the weekend his next time on the mound.

  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: Nine strikeouts in loss

Castillo (9-11) took the loss Tuesday against the Tigers, allowing three runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out nine over six innings. Castillo kept the Tigers off the board until they plated the first run of the game in the fourth. Two more runs were scored against him in the fifth after the Tigers compiled four singles in the inning. It was the fourth time this season he's given up at least eight hits in a game, though only one hit went for extra bases. He also tied his season high in strikeouts and posted his sixth straight quality start. Castillo has been one of the most consistent pitchers in all of baseball this season, posting a 3.48 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 139:38 K:BB in 142.1 innings this year. He lines up to face the Mets on Sunday to complete a two-start week.

  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: Another quality start

Castillo (9-10) picked up the win Tuesday against Boston, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk across six innings. He struck out four. Castillo delivered his fifth consecutive quality start and landed his third win during that stretch. All three runs attributed to Castillo came in the third inning when Rafael Devers lifted a three-run home run. While Castillo's K/9 has dropped from 10.0 to 8.6 this season, he's still been highly effective, posting a 3.43 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 136.1 innings. He's tentatively lined up to make his next start Tuesday against the Tigers.

  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: Tosses six scoreless frames

Castillo allowed five hits and issued two walks while striking out seven batters over six scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Angels on Wednesday. Castillo induced a modest nine whiffs, but he still managed to tally a healthy seven punchouts. The veteran hurler has tossed exactly six scoreless frames in two of his past three outings, and he's recorded a quality start in four straight appearances. Castillo's strikeout numbers are down this season -- he's on pace to record fewer punchouts than innings pitched for just the second time in his career -- but he's otherwise been reliable, posting a 3.38 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 126:37 K:BB over 130.1 innings.

  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: Quality start in loss

Castillo (8-10) allowed three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three over seven innings Friday, taking the loss versus the Astros. All of the scoring came in the third inning, when Castillo allowed five straight batters (three hits, one walk, one hit-by-pitch) to reach base. While he was efficient, needing just 90 pitches (58 strikes) to get through seven frames, the Mariners' offense once again gave him little support. Castillo has logged three straight quality starts in July and now sits at a 3.55 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 119:35 K:BB through 124.1 innings over 21 starts this season. He's projected for a favorable home start versus the Angels in his next outing.

  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: Hurls six shutout innings in win

Castillo (8-9) picked up the win over the Angels on Thursday, allowing four hits and two walks over six scoreless innings while striking out five. Castillo allowed baserunners in each of the first three innings but managed to work his way out of trouble on each occasion. The right-hander threw first-pitch strikes to 17 of 23 batters and induced 12 whiffs on the night to earn his second consecutive win. Castillo has now gone at least six innings in back-to-back outings after previously failing to do so in three straight. However, he's also issued multiple free passes in four of his last five starts.

Castillo is now at a 3.72 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 111:32 K:BB through 111.1 innings over 19 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start on the road versus the Angels in a favorable matchup.

  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: Surrenders three runs Sunday

Castillo allowed three runs on six hits and no walks while striking out three over five innings Sunday against the Twins. He did not factor into the decision. The Twins struck early with a run in the first on two base hits. Castillo went on to retire 11 of the next 12 batters he faced but then ran into more trouble in the fifth, allowing a double and two more singles, which led to another pair of runs for the Twins. He was able to work his way through the inning, but his day would end there at 77 pitches. Castillo managed to not give up any free passes for the first time since May 12, though he's also failed to complete six innings in four of his last five starts. He still holds a respectable 3.87 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 103:30 K:BB in 104.2 innings and projects to take the mound again to kick off a weekend series with Toronto.

  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: Allows four runs in loss

Castillo (6-9) took the loss against the Rays on Tuesday, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts over 5.1 innings. Castillo surrendered a leadoff home run to Yandy Diaz in the first inning and an RBI single to Jose Siri in the second. He responded with three scoreless frames but was pulled after walking two batters in the sixth. Both baserunners scored, resulting in the third time Castillo has yielded at least four earned runs in June. The 31-year-old owns a 3.79 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 100:30 K:BB over 99.2 innings this season and lines up to face the Orioles next week.

  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: Allows five earned runs in loss

Castillo (6-8) suffered the loss Thursday, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings against the Guardians. He struck out four. Castillo entered the fifth with a 3-2 lead, but with two outs a walk preceded a home run by Andres Gimenez, then another walk paved the way for a Josh Naylor double that saddled Castillo with five runs allowed and left him on the hook for the loss. Following Castillo's start June 2, he was on a 10-game stretch of allowing no more than two earned runs. However, his last three starts have been more of a mixed bag, as he's allowed 12 earned runs over his last 16 innings (6.75 ERA) including five runs allowed in two of his last three starts. He'll look to put things back together during his next start, scheduled to take place next week when the Mariners travel to Tampa to take on the Rays.

  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: Strikes out seven in win

Castillo (6-7) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out seven over six innings to earn the win over the Rangers on Friday. Castillo received an extra day of rest after Emerson Hancock got a spot start Thursday. It looks like that was a good move, as Castillo was able to bounce back from his worst start of the year to earn his third quality start in his last four outings. He is now at a 3.32 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 92:24 K:BB over 89.1 innings through 15 starts. He's projected for a challenging road matchup versus the Guardians next week.

  • Mariners' Luis Castillo: Bumped back to Friday

Castillo's next start has been pushed back a day to Friday against the Rangers, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. The Mariners have just one off day over the next two weeks and one member of their rotation, Bryan Woo (forearm), who is banged up, so the team will use this as an opportunity to give their regular starters some rest. Emerson Hancock will draw the start Thursday versus the White Sox while everyone else gets bumped back.
