Giants' Mike Yastrzemski: Time off precautionary
Yastrzemski (knee) is taking a day or two off as a precaution, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Yastrzemski was scratched from the lineup Tuesday due to right knee soreness, but the outfielder tells Slusser he's unconcerned about his status going forward. The 32-year-old is expected to be a regular against right-handed pitching in 2023, and the Giants aren't going to take any risks in the early part of the exhibition season.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Mike Yastrzemski: Scratched from lineup Tuesday
Yastrzemski was scratched from the Giants' Cactus League lineup Tuesday due to right knee soreness, Evan Webeck of the San Jose Mercury News reports. It's believed to be a minor issue. Yaztrzemski had been scheduled to start in center field and bat third against the Padres, but now it'll be Bryce Johnson in center and hitting seventh, with Isan Diaz moving up to the No. 3 spot in the Giants' batting order.... Giants' Mike Yastrzemski: Agrees to avoid arbitration
Yastrzemski agreed to a one-year, $6.1 million contract with the Giants on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Yastrzemski's performance has slipped over the past couple years since his breakout in 2019-20, though he was still right around league average by wRC+ last season. His struggles against lefties really dragged him down, so Yastrzemski may be shielded from southpaws a bit more in 2023. Regardless he should still be in the lineup more often than not.... Giants' Mike Yastrzemski: Homers during loss
Yastrzemski went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's loss against the Diamondbacks. Yastrzemski blasted a homer off righty reliever Mark Melancon with two outs in the eighth inning to get San Francisco within five. The outfielder has hit well over his last 11 games, recording a .310 average and .738 slugging percentage with five home runs over 42 at-bats.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Mike Yastrzemski: Stays warm Friday
Yastrzemski went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, a walk, two RBI and three runs scored in Friday's 10-4 win over the Diamondbacks. He's homered four times in his last 10 games, and he's added a double in three of those contests as well. It's a strong push to the finish line for Yastrzemski, who has had his ups and downs throughout 2022. That's most evident in his .214/.306/.390 slash line, though he's added 16 homers, 30 doubles, 54 RBI, 71 runs scored and five stolen bases while providing solid defense around the Giants' outfield.... Giants' Mike Yastrzemski: Heads to bench
Yastrzemski will hit the bench Saturday against the Dodgers, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Giants' Mike Yastrzemski: Swipes bag in loss
Yastrzemski went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored in Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the Tigers. This was Yastrzemski's first multi-hit effort since Aug. 12, though he picked up his second stolen base in his last three games. He's gone just 3-for-36 with no extra-base hits in his last 11 contests, lowering his slash line to .211/.310/.377 with 12 home runs, 44 RBI, 54 runs scored and a career-high five steals through 111 games this year.... Giants' Mike Yastrzemski: Scores twice Sunday
Yastrzemski went 1-for-5 with a stolen base and two runs scored in Sunday's 9-8 extra-innings win over the Rockies. Yastrzemski singled and stole second base in the seventh inning before scoring on an Evan Longoria grand slam. In the 11th, Yastrzemski was the initial runner and scored on a Wilmer Flores sacrifice fly, which stood as the winning run. Over his previous eight games, Yastrzemski was mired in an 0-for-26 slump, during which he posted a 4:12 BB:K. He's down to a .208/.306/.376 slash line with 12 home runs, 44 RBI, 53 runs scored and four steals through 109 contests, and it doesn't appear the slump has cost him much playing time -- he's still manager Gave Kapler's preferred center fielder versus right-handed pitchers....
