Hernandez cleared waivers and was outrighted to the Royals' alternate training site Wednesday. The 27-year-old was designated for assigment over the weekend and will remain in the organization after going unclaimed on waivers. Hernandez will continue to provide catching depth in the 60-man pool, but he's unlikely to rejoin the roster if Salvador Perez, Cam Gallagher and Meibrys Viloria remain healthy.... See More ... Royals' Oscar Hernandez: Cast off roster
The Royals designated Hernandez for assignment Sunday. With Cam Gallagher returning from the COVID-19 injured list ahead of Sunday's series finale with the White Sox, the Royals no longer needed to keep Hernandez around as a third catcher. Assuming Hernandez goes unclaimed off waivers, he'll stick within the organization and report to the Royals' alternate training site. Hernandez appeared in four games during his time with the big club, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Oscar Hernandez: Cracks Opening Day roster
Hernandez was added to the Kansas City's 30-man roster Thursday, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports. Hernandez will provide the team with additional depth behind the plate to start the season. His stint with the big club could be brief given the presence of super-utility Erick Mejia -- who is also capable of playing backstop -- on the roster.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Oscar Hernandez: Latches on with Kansas City
The Royals signed Hernandez to a minor-league contract Thursday. Hernandez's deal includes an invitation to summer camp, where he'll provide the Royals with some additional depth behind the plate while top backstop Salvador Perez (illness) recovers from the coronavirus. The 26-year-old Hernandez previously appeared in 22 games at the big-league level with Arizona between 2015 and 2016, but he's played at only the Double-A and Triple-A level over the past three seasons.... Oscar Hernandez: Released by Cardinals
Hernandez was released by the Cardinals on Monday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Hernandez signed a minor-league deal in January as a non-roster invitee, but he failed to record a hit over seven plate appearances in spring training before play was suspended. The 26-year-old has struggled in recent seasons and hit just .192/.258/.355 with six home runs and 44 strikeouts over 54 games played at Double-A and Triple-A in 2019.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Oscar Hernandez: Joins Cardinals on minors deal
Hernandez signed a minor-league contract with the Cardinals on Tuesday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. The catcher will receive an invitation to big-league camp as part of the deal. Hernandez is unlikely to be anything other than organizational depth this season, as he's appeared in just 22 major-league games, none of which have come in the last three seasons. He hit .209/.274/.399 in 47 games for Triple-A Pawtucket in the Red Sox's system in 2019.... See More ... See Less -

Red Sox's Oscar Hernandez: Optioned to Triple-A
Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Hernandez was called up as the temporary backup to Christian Vazquez after Sandy Leon was placed on paternity leave. With Leon ready to return, Hernandez is being sent back to Triple-A Pawtucket. He did not appear in a game during the brief callup.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Oscar Hernandez: Contract selected by Red Sox
Hernandez's contract was selected by the Red Sox on Friday. Hernandez will serve as the temporary backup to Christian Vazquez with Sandy Leon out on paternity leave. Hernandez has appeared in 22 major-league games but none since 2016, hitting .167/.239/.262. He shouldn't be counted on for much at the plate if he even sees any playing time with Boston, as he owns a .184/.268/.250 mark in the high minors over the last two seasons.... See More ... Red Sox's Oscar Hernandez: Returns from suspension
Hernandez (suspension) was added to Triple-A Pawtucket's active roster Thursday and has appeared in two games with the club, going 1-for-7 with four strikeouts. Hernandez was handed a 50-game suspension in spring training following a violation of minor league baseball's drug policy. Now that the ban has lapsed, Hernandez will likely serve as a depth option behind the plate for Pawtucket this season. Hernandez spent the 2017 campaign at Double-A Jackson in the Arizona organization, slashing .197/.257/.348 across 255 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Oscar Hernandez: Signs deal with Red Sox
Hernandez has signed a contract with Boston, Alex Kolodziej of FanRag Sports reports Hernandez last played in the big leagues back in 2016 with the Diamondbacks, where he only made 11 plate appearances -- the 24-year-old catcher spent 2017 in Double-A Jackson, slashing a disappointing .197/.182/.348. Look for Hernandez to start the season at Triple-A Pawtucket, where he figures to provide additional depth for Boston's minor league system behind the dish.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Oscar Hernandez: Optioned to Double-A
Hernandez was optioned to Double-A Jackson on Thursday. The Diamondbacks made a pair of roster moves to clear a spot for J.J. Hoover, whose contract was selected Thursday. Hernandez fared well this spring, slashing .294/.368/.647 with a pair of home runs, but the Diamondbacks had to cut down on the number of catchers they'll be carrying with Opening Day rapidly approaching. He'll begin the season at Double-A.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Oscar Hernandez: Aiming for Monday return
Hernandez (hamstring) is aiming to return to action in a minor league game Monday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Hernandez has put together a strong spring in a small sample, slashing .294/.368/.647 with two home runs and five RBI over 17 at-bats. He has been bothered by a hamstring issue of late, however. Even with Hernandez's solid showing thus far this spring, Jeff Mathis and Chris Iannetta look to be the primary considerations at catcher for the Opening Day roster.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Oscar Hernandez: Hits game-winning blast for first homer
Hernandez got the start behind the plate Wednesday, and hit a go-ahead solo homer in the 12th inning that proved decisive for the D-Backs, who won 3-2. Hernandez was recently called up for a temporary stint with Welington Castillo on paternity leave and Chris Herrmann on the DL, but proved to be the hero Wednesday. He will likely be sent back to the minors in the next couple days with Castillo returning, so don't go rushing to add the young catcher.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Oscar Hernandez: Recalled from Double-A
Hernandez was recalled from Double-A Mobile on Tuesday. Welington Castillo hit the Paternity Leave List on Tuesday, so Hernandez will come up to provide some insurance behind Tuffy Gosewisch with Chris Herrmann on the DL. Castillo isn't likely to miss more than a day or two, so Hernandez's stay with the big league club could be a short one.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Oscar Hernandez: Optioned to High-A Visalia
The Diamondbacks optioned Hernandez to High-A Visalia on Monday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. Hernandez spent all of last season with the big club as a Rule 5 pick, but he appeared in just 18 games with the big club, and his assignment to High-A indicates the team still believes he has plenty of developing to do.... Diamondbacks catcher Wellington Castillo isn't in the starting lineup for Friday's game, the third straight game he's missed with tightness in his left hamstring. Diamondbacks activate C Oscar Hernandez from DL; Dorn optioned
The Diamondbacks have reinstated catcher Oscar Hernandez from the 60-day disabled list, the team announced on Saturday. Hernandez has been out all season due to a broken hand. Hernandez played in 13 rehab games, going 8 for 38 with three RBI. As a Rule 5 draft pick, the Diamondbacks must keep a healthy Hernandez on the 25-man roster, or risk losing him back to the Rays. The D-Backs have optioned outfielder Danny Dorn to Triple-A to clear room on the roster for Hernandez.... See More ... See Less -
D-Backs C Oscar Hernandez (wrist) could be back this weekend
Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said catcher Oscar Hernandez could be activated from the disabled list as soon as this weekend, according to Fox Sports Arizona. Hernandez, who is recovering from a wrist injury, has played in 10 rehab games so far, amassing six hits in 28 at-bats. It is unclear exactly when Hernandez will be activated, and what his role will be with the Diamondbacks upon his return. Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Welington Castillo seem to be entrenched as platoon-mates behind the plate.... See More ... See Less -
D-Backs C Oscar Hernandez will join MLB team when healthy
Diamondbacks catcher Oscar Hernandez, who began a minor-league rehab assignment on Tuesday, is expected to join the Major League roster when he is ready to be activated from the disabled list, according to FoxSports Arizona. Hernandez, on the DL with a broken bone in his hand, was a Rule 5 pick by the Diamondbacks this offseason. The Diamondbacks would need to keep him on the active roster to avoid losing him back to the Rays. Hernandez has not seen any big-league action this season, after undergoing surgery to repair the bone at the beginning of spring training. He has one hit in eight at-bats through his first three rehab games with Class A Kane County.... See More ... See Less
