Initially it was reported that he was mulling his options, but Frazier opted to remain with the Cubs, as there likely wasn't a team willing to give him a 40-man roster slot and pay the rest of his $1.5 million contract for this season. Frazier will likely put up impressive numbers at Iowa, but he is not a key part the Cubs' long-term plans.
Frazier cleared waivers Friday and has yet to decide whether he will accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Iowa or become a free agent, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
It sounds like Frazier's representatives will try to find another home for him, but he may head to Iowa if the pickings are slim. Once a top prospect with Cleveland and the Yankees, Frazier has been unable to recapture the form he showed from 2018 through 2020, when he slashed .267/.351/.485 with 20 home runs in 123 games. He's managed a .216/.356/.297 line in 45 plate appearances this year. Injuries have also played a part in his struggles.
