  • Drew Robinson: Announces retirement

Robinson announced his retirement Friday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Robinson began the 2021 campaign with Triple-A Sacramento and hit .128 across 35 games, but he'll now hang up his cleats to join the Giants' front office following his return to baseball across the past few years. The 29-year-old appeared in 100 major-league games with the Rangers and Cardinals during his career and slashed .202/.296/.359 with nine home runs, 32 runs and 22 RBI.

  • Giants' Drew Robinson: Working as DH on Wednesday

Robinson (elbow) will serve as the Giants' designated hitter and bat ninth in Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Brewers, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Though Robinson won't see any defensive work Wednesday, he previously saw action at second base and right field in his prior two spring appearances. As such, it appears safe to conclude that he's reasonably healthy after requiring progressive Tommy John surgery on his left elbow in August. Robinson is attending camp as a non-roster invitee and will compete for a utility spot on the Giants' Opening Day roster.

  • Giants' Drew Robinson: Headed to big-league camp

Robinson (elbow) received an invitation to major-league spring training Monday, Amy Gutierrez of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Robinson inked a minor-league deal with the Giants in mid-October, and he'll have the opportunity to begin the spring with the big-league club. He appeared in just five major-league contests a season ago with the Cardinals, going 1-for-7 with three strikeouts. Despite undergoing partial Tommy John surgery in August, it appears as though Robinson will be ready to go for camp.

  • Giants' Drew Robinson: Signs minor-league contract

Robinson (elbow) signed a minor-league contract with the Giants on Thursday, Kegan Lowe of Baseball America reports.

Robinson will enter the Giants' minor-league system in 2020 after being released by the Cardinals at the end of the 2019 season. The 27-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery at the beginning of August. In 55 games with Triple-A Memphis in 2019, Robinson hit .265/.385/.423 with six home runs and 28 RBI.

  • Drew Robinson: Released by Cardinals

Robinson (elbow) was released by the Cardinals on Wednesday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Robinson had already been ruled out for the remainder of the season after undergoing partial Tommy John surgery earlier in the month, so the Cardinals opted to cut ties with the utility man to free up a spot on their 40-man roster ahead of September. The 27-year-old has appeared in 100 big-league games across the past three seasons, slashing .202/.296/.359 with nine home runs and two steals in 253 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Drew Robinson: Has 'progressive' TJ surgery

Robinson (elbow) had a partial Tommy John surgery on his left elbow Thursday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Robinson was put on the injured list at Triple-A Memphis back on June 26 with the injury, and Thursday's surgery was considered just a partial repair of the elbow. That puts Robinson on a timeline to likely return by the beginning of spring training. The fact that Robinson throws right-handed even though he hits left-handed should help with a speedier recovery time than that usually associated with a full Tommy John surgery as well. Robinson spent five games at the big-league level this past season, but the majority of his time (55 games) was logged with the Redbirds, for which he slashed .265/.385/.423 over 234 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Drew Robinson: Heads back to farm

The Cardinals optioned Robinson to Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday.

Robinson's stay with the big club lasted just one day, with the utility man delivering a pinch-hit single in his lone at-bat during Monday's 13-5 win over the Brewers. His removal from the active roster clears a spot for pitcher Daniel Ponce de Leon, who is scheduled to start Tuesday.

Robinson was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Monday.

Robinson has already had two separate stints in St. Louis this season but only has six at-bats and zero hits. This latest stay may not last particularly long, as the Cardinals will need a starter Tuesday in place of Michael Wacha (knee).

  • Cardinals' Drew Robinson: Heading to minors

Robinson was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Friday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The 26-year-old was able to crack the Opening Day roster as Jedd Gyorko (calf) started the season on the injured list, and Gyorko's return Friday spelled an end to this big-league stint. Robinson appeared solely as a pinch hitter and went 0-for-3 with one strikeout through the first six games of the year.

  • Cardinals' Drew Robinson: Makes Opening Day roster

Robinson's spot on the Opening Day roster is now locked in with Jedd Gyorko (calf) opening the season on the injured list, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.

Robinson had already helped his cause with a solid spring at the plate, but Gyorko's season-opening absence helps cement Robinson's status. The 26-year-old has hit .268 with eight RBI over 56 Grapefruit League at-bats and is capable of filling in at all three outfield positions.

  • Cardinals' Drew Robinson: Heating up

Robinson went 3-for-4 with a double, four RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases Thursday.

After a slow start to the spring, Robinson has collected six hits in his last 11 at-bats. He now has 10 hits in 39 at-bats, but has also struck out 16 times. This hot stretch is coming at the right time for Robinson as he is competing for a bench spot in a crowded Cardinals lineup, though it appears likely he'll begin the season at Triple-A Memphis.

Robinson was traded from the Rangers to the Cardinals on Tuesday in exchange for Patrick Wisdom.

Robinson split time between Triple-A Round Rock and the majors in 2018, hitting .303/.379/.569 in 53 games for the Express but struggling to a .183/.288/.294 line across 47 games with the Rangers. The 26-year-old should fill a utility role for the Cardinals while offering a left-handed bat off the bench.

Robinson was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday.

Robinson was expected to return to the Rangers in September when rosters expand, but rejoins the team a few weeks early with Delino DeShields dealing with a finger fracture. Robinson could see some starts in center field along with Carlos Tocci.
