The game was tied 0-0 entering extra innings, but the Tigers scraped together two runs before Kelly's big blast put the contest out of reach. The 29-year-old is off to a good start with a 1.278 OPS across three games. Kelly and Jake Rogers both started in this one, with the latter serving as DH, and the two should continue to split time behind the plate in Detroit moving forward.

That's one start apiece for the two catchers, and it will be worth monitoring the playing time split moving forward. Kelly seems to be the backup at the moment, though he could seize a larger role if he outplays Rogers. Both players could also start at the same time against southpaws with one of them serving as the DH.

  Kelly could see some time at DH this year on days when Jake Rogers starts behind the plate, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Kelly was already expected to see a sizable role as the backup catcher, and time at DH would boost his prospects further. Rogers should still play more frequently, though Kelly will be involved it seems, particularly against left-handed pitchers, as he posted an .801 OPS against southpaws last season. His value would increase if Rogers were to deal with an injury at any point.

Kelly may not be part of a full-on timeshare with Jake Rogers, but the veteran backstop has impressed the club this spring after making offseason swing changes. The 29-year-old cranked his second Grapefruit League home run Wednesday and is currently sitting on an .897 OPS in 12 games. Kelly has slashed just .210/.281/.320 over the last two seasons but had a .768 OPS in the three seasons prior to that.

  The Tigers plan to exercise Kelly's $3.5 million team option for 2024, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. After getting released by Arizona in mid-August, Kelly caught on with the Tigers shortly thereafter on a prorated one-year, $720,000 deal that included the club option for 2024. Over 19 games with the Tigers, Kelly hit just .173 and got on base at a .271 clip, but the organization was evidently satisfied enough with how the 29-year-old handled the pitching staff and acquitted himself defensively to justify bringing him back for 2024. Kelly will likely head into Opening Day as the Tigers' No. 2 catcher behind Jake Rogers.

  Kelly went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Friday's 8-2 loss to the Athletics. Kelly has seen somewhat limited playing time since signing with the Tigers on Aug. 19. He hasn't done much to earn more either, batting .190 (8-for-42) over 15 games with his new team, with his homer Friday being his first as a Tiger. He has a .214/.270/.302 slash line with two long balls, 11 RBI, 11 runs scored and one stolen base over 48 contests between Detroit and Arizona this season.

  Kelly and the Tigers agreed on a major-league contract with a club option for 2024 on Saturday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Kelly was released by the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, but it didn't take long for him to find a new squad. The catcher struggled to a .226 average with one homer, six RBI, six runs and a stolen base over 84 at-bats in 33 games with Arizona this season. Kelly will seemingly replace Eric Haase as Detroit's primary backup behind Jake Rogers moving forward after Haase was designated for assignment Saturday.
