Player Outlook
Mitch Haniger has played a full season just once since 2018 and appeared in only 61 games with the Giants in 2023 because of oblique, forearm and back injuries. That was the first year of a two-year, $28 million agreement with San Francisco, and Haniger will switch teams again this year after being traded to Seattle in January. Haniger should be at full strength leading into the start of spring training and will be given every opportunity to claim an everyday role, but it's very hard to trust that he can be a reliable or useful presence on a fantasy roster. When he was healthy last season, the now 33-year-old outfielder posted career worsts in batting average (.209) and OPS (.631) while tallying only six home runs across 299 plate appearances.

  • Mariners' Mitch Haniger: Pops third spring homer

Haniger went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in a Cactus League win over the Brewers on Thursday. Haniger's solo homer in the first inning was his third of spring and pushed his Cactus League average and OPS to .450 and 1.450, respectively, across 22 plate appearances. The veteran outfielder, who's enjoying a clean bill of health after an injury-hampered 2023 season with the Giants, has also professed several times this spring that he feels extremely comfortable being back in Seattle after a year away.

  • Mariners' Mitch Haniger: Homers in first spring at-bat

Haniger started at designated hitter and went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in the Mariners' Cactus League loss to the Guardians on Sunday. Haniger sent a Tyler Beede offering into the bullpen in the first inning, his first official at-bat since returning to the Mariners this winter after a one-year sabbatical in San Francisco. Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports Haniger's shot had 108 mph of exit velocity and a distance of 384 feet, certainly encouraging for a veteran that was riddled with injuries in 2023. The outfielder has already expressed his satisfaction with being back in Seattle, and he's been working extensively with a familiar face in director of hitting strategy Jarret DeHart, who was on staff during Haniger's initial Mariners tenure, and a new hire in offensive coordinator Brant Brown.

  • Mariners' Mitch Haniger: Ready for spring action

Haniger (back) is batting second as the designated hitter for Sunday's spring game against the Guardians. The veteran outfielder finished 2023 on the injured list with a back strain, but he's good to go early in spring training. Haniger had a career-worst .631 OPS in just 61 games with the Giants last season as he also dealt with oblique and forearm issues, but the Mariners are hoping for better injury luck in 2024 after acquiring him for Robbie Ray (elbow).

  • Mariners' Mitch Haniger: Dealt to Seattle

The Giants traded Haniger (back), Anthony DeSclafani (elbow) and cash to the Mariners on Friday in exchange for Robbie Ray (elbow), Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Haniger is coming off a 2023 campaign in which he slashed .209/.266/.365 -- easily his worst season at the plate -- and missed most of the year due to oblique, forearm and back injuries. However, Haniger maintained an .817 OPS during five years with the Mariners prior to joining the Giants, and the familiar scenery could spark a return to form for the 33-year-old. Haniger will make $20 million this season and holds a $15.5 million player option for 2025.

  • Giants' Mitch Haniger: Shut down with back strain

The Giants placed Haniger on the 10-day injured list Friday with a lower back strain, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. It's an early shutdown for Haniger, who appeared in only 61 games this season while slashing .209/.266/.365 with six home runs and 28 RBI across 229 plate appearances. The 32-year-old outfielder is owed $20 million in 2024 and carries a $15.5 million player option for 2025.

Haniger is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Diamondbacks, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. • Giants' Mitch Haniger: Three RBI in win

Haniger went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI in Sunday's 11-10 win over the Rockies. Haniger plated a run in the fifth with his first double of the game and then two more in the sixth with another two-bagger. It was just his second multi-hit game since returning from the injured list Aug. 29, and he doubled his RBI total since his return with Sunday's performance. In his 16 games back, Haniger is slashing just .163/.241/.408 and has a 31.5 percent strikeout rate.

  • Giants' Mitch Haniger: Smacks homer in win

Haniger went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, a double, a walk and an additional run scored in Sunday's 6-3 win over the Rockies. Haniger hit safely for his third straight game, and he's homered in consecutive contests. This was his first multi-hit effort in nine contests since he returned from a fractured forearm. The veteran outfielder appears to be getting back on track at the plate. He's still slashing just .224/.277/.402 with six homers, 25 RBI, 24 runs scored and a stolen base over 49 contests this season.

  • Giants' Mitch Haniger: Lifts fifth homer

Haniger went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 9-8 win over the Rockies. Haniger has slumped since returning from a fractured right forearm on Aug. 29, going 3-for-23 over eight games in that span. The slow restart has cost him playing time against right-handed pitchers, though he should remain in the lineup regularly versus southpaws. The outfielder's first year with the Giants has been unimpressive with five homers, 23 RBI, 22 runs scored, one stolen base and a .216/.266/.374 slash line over 184 plate appearances.

  • Giants' Mitch Haniger: Sitting against righty

Haniger is absent from the lineup Tuesday versus the Cubs. Mike Yastrzemski will play right field and Joc Pederson is in left as the Giants face right-hander Kyle Hendricks. Haniger has mostly been limited to starts against left-handed pitching opponents since he returned Aug. 29 from a fractured right forearm.

  • Giants' Mitch Haniger: Not playing regularly vs. righties

Haniger is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres. Haniger will head to the bench for the second time in five games, with all of his absences coming against right-handed starting pitchers. Since being activated from the 60-day injured list Tuesday, Haniger has gone 1-for-11 with a triple and a walk while striking out five times in three games. Until he shows more signs of life at the plate, Haniger looks like he could be limited to a short-side platoon role for the playoff-hopeful Giants.

Haniger is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Following a lengthy stay on the injured list with a fractured forearm, Haniger returned to the lineup for Tuesday's 6-1 win, starting in left field while going 0-for-4 with a run. He'll rest for Wednesday's matinee as he's eased back into action. Joc Pederson and Mike Yastrzemski will serve as the Giants' starting corner outfielders.

  • Giants' Mitch Haniger: Hitless in return

Haniger (forearm) went 0-for-4 with a run scored in Tuesday's 6-1 win over the Reds. Haniger didn't get a hit in his return from a broken forearm, but he reached on an error and scored. He played the full game in left field. The 32-year-old outfielder is slashing .224/.274/.362 with four home runs, 22 RBI, 20 runs scored and a stolen base over 41 games this season. He should be a near-everyday option in the near term, at least until Mike Yastrzemski (hamstring) and Michael Conforto (hamstring) are back in the fold.

  • Giants' Mitch Haniger: Activated from 60-day IL

The Giants activated Haniger (forearm) from the 60-day injured list Tuesday. Haniger has been sidelined since mid-June due to a fractured right forearm and went 1-for-17 on his five-game minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento, but the Giants need all the help they can get as they try to claim an NL Wild Card spot. The 32-year-old should see regular starts in the San Francisco outfield down the stretch.

  • Giants' Mitch Haniger: Could be activated this week

Manager Gabe Kapler said that he's hopeful Haniger (forearm) will return from the 60-day injured list during the Giants' series with the the Reds that begins Monday, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Haniger is scheduled to appear in another rehab game Sunday for Triple-A Sacramento in what could be his final tuneup before he returns from the IL. Though Haniger has gone just 1-for-15 with a walk and a run scored through his first four rehab games, he's struck out in just two of those at-bats and has been able to play some innings in left field in addition to serving as a designated hitter. Haniger has been on the IL since June 14 with a fractured right forearm that eventually required surgery.

  • Giants' Mitch Haniger: Reporting to Triple-A for rehab

Haniger (forearm) will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Sacramento, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Haniger will likely require several games with Sacramento to get his timing back on the plate, given that he's been sidelined since mid-June after requiring a surgery to address a fractured right forearm. He was cleared to resume baseball activities in late July and began taking batting practice more than a week and a half ago, suffering no setbacks along the way. Once he completes his rehab stint at Sacramento and returns from the 60-day injured list, Haniger should reclaim a near-everyday role in the San Francisco lineup at a corner-outfield spot or designated hitter.

  • Giants' Mitch Haniger: Starting rehab next week

Haniger (forearm) is on track to begin a rehab assignment next week, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. Haniger is headed to the Giants' spring training complex in Arizona to continue ramping up his activities and will soon test himself in a game setting. The veteran outfielder has missed more than two months after requiring surgery to repair a fractured right forearm, so he will need a good number of at-bats during his rehab assignment to knock the rust off before being activated from the 60-day injured list.

  • Giants' Mitch Haniger: Ramping up activity

Haniger (forearm) is ramping up all activity and could embark on a rehab assignment in a week, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Haniger was initially cleared for activity in late July and began taking swings in the batting cage Saturday. If Haniger is able to begin a rehab assignment within the next week, his chance of returning before the end of the month would improve significantly. Otherwise, an early-September return appears more likely. The 32-year-old outfielder has been on the IL since June 13 after requiring surgery to repair a fracture in his right forearm.
