  • Rays' Chris Devenski: Roughed up in latest appearance

Devenski (0-1) surrendered five unearned runs on two hits and one walk while striking out two over one inning of relief in Friday's 5-3 loss to the Yankees.

Though he lowered his season-long ERA to 7.36, Devenski was far from sharp Friday and was dealt his first loss of the campaign. While entering the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Rays clinging to a 1-0 lead, Devenski struck out Gleyber Torres to begin the frame before Alex Verdugo reached first base on a Curtis Mead fielding error. Devenski proceeded to walk the next batter before another fielding error allowed the tying run to score. The right-hander then gave up a tie-breaking single followed by a three-run home run to Juan Soto that proved to be all the support the Yankees pitching staff would need on the night. The pair of errors certainly didn't help Devenski, but he's largely been ineffective as a multi-inning reliever for Tampa Bay this season and doesn't appear poised to garner many high-leverage opportunities at any point in the near future.

  • Rays' Chris Devenski: Candidate for starting role

Devenski is an option to step in as the Rays' No. 5 starter due to Taj Bradley (pectoral) being ruled out for the start of the season, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Devenski has not started a big-league game since the 2019 season, but September was a renaissance of sorts as he posted a 2.08 ERA and 9:2 K:BB in nine appearances with the Rays down the stretch. Tampa Bay liked what it saw enough to bring the veteran back for 2024, and he has been building up to handle multiple innings this spring. Devenski threw two innings against the Blue Jays on Monday, allowing one run on three hits while striking out one batter.

  • Rays' Chris Devenski: Building up workload

The Rays plan to build Devenski up to three innings by mid-March, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.

Devenski ended the 2023 season with the Rays and re-signed with the club in free agency. He hasn't made a start in the majors since 2019 and that was only a two-inning appearance. Given that, he's unlikely to be a traditional starter in 2024, but he is lining up for a potential multi-frame relief role.

  • Rays' Chris Devenski: Re-signs with Tampa Bay

Tampa Bay re-signed Devenski to a one-year, $1.1 million contract Tuesday with a $2 million club option for 2025, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Devenski posted an overall 4.46 ERA in 42.1 innings between the Angels and Rays in 2023, but he racked up 42 strikeouts while issuing only 11 walks. The 33-year-old right-hander owns a career 3.78 ERA in 373.1 total big-league frames and returns to Tampa Bay as a likely middle or multi-inning reliever.

  • Rays' Chris Devenski: Joins Rays, hits bereavement list

Devenski signed a major-league contract with the Rays on Tuesday and was subsequently placed on the bereavement list, Steve Carney of StPeteNine.com reports.

Upon returning from the Angels' 15-day injured list Friday, Devenski was designated for assignment, but he didn't take long to catch on elsewhere after clearing waivers. The 32-year-old righty had put up a 5.08 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP across 33.2 innings with the Halos this season. Devenski will go on the bereavement list and is likely to join the Rays for their upcoming series against Cleveland, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

  • Angels' Chris Devenski: Activated then DFA'd

Devenski (hamstring) was activated from the 15-day injured list Friday and designated for assignment, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.

Devenski has recovered from a right hamstring strain that sent him to the IL in mid-July, but the Angels don't have a spot for him in their bullpen and needed to clear out 40-man roster space for the return of backup catcher Chad Wallach.

  • Angels' Chris Devenski: Kicks off rehab assignment

Devenski (hamstring) began a rehab assignment Monday in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League, striking out three and allowing one hit over a scoreless inning.

Devenski landed on the 15-day injured list July 17 with a right hamstring strain but shouldn't require too much ramp-up time before making his return to the Angels bullpen. Prior to landing on the IL, Devenski had scooped up three wins and 10 holds while pitching to a 5.08 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 33:9 K:BB across 33.2 innings.

  • Angels' Chris Devenski: Heading to injured list

Devenski will be placed on the injured list Monday due to a hamstring injury, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.

Devenski hasn't performed particularly well in July, as he's allowed nine runs in 4.2 innings over his last five appearances. It's possible his injury factored into some of his struggles, and he'll have some time to recover over the next few weeks. It's not yet clear whether he'll be forced to spend more than the minimum amount of time on the IL.

  • Angels' Chris Devenski: Continues recent slide

Devenski was tagged with a blown save against Colorado on Friday. He allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit and struck out one batter.

Devenski entered with one out and a pair of runners on base in the eighth inning. An error by Andrew Velazquez allowed the Rockies to load the bases, and Devenski then served up a grand slam to Elias Diaz to flip the score in Colorado's favor. The righty reliever has been dominant for much of the season -- through June 15, he notched a 1.85 ERA, 0.62 WHIP and nine holds over 19 contests. However, he's been scored upon in each of his past three games, allowing six runs (five earned) over 2.2 frames and picking up two losses along with two blown saves.

  • Angels' Chris Devenski: Staying with Angels

Devenski is staying with the Angels rather than opting out of his minor-league deal, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Devenski had the option of declaring himself a free agent since the Angels didn't add him to their 40-man roster by Saturday, but the veteran hurler has instead decided to stick with the organization. Devenski struggled mightily with an 8.59 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over 14.2 innings between the Diamondbacks and Phillies last season, but he'll try to work his way back to the majors through the Angels' Triple-A affiliate.

  • Angels' Chris Devenski: Reassigned to minor-league camp

Devenski was reassigned to minor-league camp by the Angels on Tuesday.

Devenski was signed to a minor-league contract with an invite to spring training with the hope that he could make the Angels as a middle-innings option. He comes up short in that goal, and now is likely going to be a relief option for Triple-A Salt Lake to begin 2023. There's a chance he could join Los Angeles and its pitching staff in the early months if he pitches well, but the Angels would have to add Devenski to their 40-man roster in order for him to pitch in the majors.
